Celebrating Ordination Day Drunk! Intoxicated Monk Enters Popular Shabu Restaurant, Heads to Bar, Then Challenges Police to Fight

A 60-year-old monk from Nong Bua Lamphu was arrested in Udon Thani after becoming heavily intoxicated, attempting to enter a bar, and attacking police officers. He was defrocked and charged with public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.

Celebrating Ordination Day Drunk! Intoxicated Monk Enters Popular Shabu Restaurant, Heads to Bar, Then Challenges Police to Fight
23 May Khaosod

At 8 PM on May 23, 2569, Deputy Superintendent Sataporn Sawatdee of Muang Udon Thani Police Station received a report of an intoxicated monk behaving disruptively and attempting to enter a popular shabu-shabu buffet restaurant and a liquor bar behind a shopping mall on Thong Yai Road in Udon Thani Municipality, about 300 meters from Udon Thani Railway Station. Police Unit 191 rushed to the scene.

When officers arrived, shopping mall security had already seated the monk on the ground near the bar entrance. He was wearing only a simple robe and lower garment with flip-flops, showing severe signs of intoxication. He staggered, spoke incoherently, reeked of alcohol, and shouted while cursing onlookers. He claimed he had drunk clear whisky and could drink wherever he wanted because it wasn't unconstitutional—arguing that politicians who created the constitution were the real violators.

Police found his monk's certificate and ID card, identifying him as Phra Somr Kusomo (Dhammayut sect), also known as Mr. Somr, 60 years old, a temple-ordained monk from Wat Pa Lailai in Nong Bua Lamphu Province. He had been ordained for 20 years since age 40. When questioned, he remained heavily intoxicated and angry at being checked, insulting reporters as ignorant of the constitution and challenging two police officers to fight.

Police transported him by pickup truck to collect his belongings from Udon Thani Railway Station. As they attempted to take him to the temple, he tried jumping from the moving vehicle. When police stopped to restrain him, he grabbed an officer's baton and attempted to strike them, leading to a struggle before he was handcuffed to the truck bed amid public shock.

Police then took Somr to Wat Bodhi Samphon, a royal temple in Udon Thani Province, for immediate defrocking. Venerable Sutthipaññavat, deputy provincial sangha leader, conducted the disrobing ceremony and removed his yellow robes. Afterward, he remained intoxicated and disoriented, unable to recall where he was or came from, but admitted to Venerable Sutthipaññavat that he drinks regularly whenever possible, claiming it relieves arm tightness.

After Somr changed into white civilian clothes, police invited him to the station, but he refused, saying he wanted to rest at the temple. However, officers escorted him out of the provincial sangha leader's quarters. He then argued with police again, claiming he was being forced to leave and threatened to punch an officer. Police took him into custody and filed charges for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.

Sawon, 55, the shopping mall security guard, revealed that he first saw the monk arriving by tuk-tuk at the railway station entrance, then saw him emerge later in severe intoxication reeking of alcohol. The monk initially asked Sawon if he had seen his mother, and when told no, he attempted to enter the shopping mall.

Thai Sepaktakraw Chief Slams Referees: 'They Can Have the Championship' – Threatens to Withdraw National Team
23 May Khaosod

At the ISTAF Sepaktakraw World Cup 2026 in Malaysia on May 23, 2026, Thailand's defending champion men's team faced Malaysia in a semifinal match that became heated in the third deciding set after the teams were tied 1-1. With Thailand trailing 1-0 in sets and leading 14-13 late in the second set, Thai players attempted a finishing move, but Singaporean referee Radee ruled that Thailand had stepped out of bounds. The Thai team protested by refusing to continue playing, with the coaching staff demanding the point be reinstated and the referee be changed, or they would forfeit the match. After time ran out, Thailand was penalized with a forfeit loss.

After the match, Thana Chaiyaprasit, president of the Thai Sepaktakraw Association (known as 'Big Tom'), alleged that the International Federation had intentionally assigned Radee to officiate and that the refereeing was blatantly unfair, with at least three questionable calls. He stated the team decided to let Malaysia take the trophy rather than continue under these conditions, noting that filing protests would be futile since the Federation appeared to have predetermined the outcome. He criticized that lower-line judges repeatedly awarded points to Thailand, only for Radee to overrule them with replay decisions.

"Going forward, we need to reconsider our participation," Chaiyaprasit said. "If this continues, we may not send our full national team to future competitions. Instead, we might send our youth team to gain experience."

In the ISTAF Sepaktakraw World Cup 2026 men's team final at Titiwangsa Stadium in Malaysia on May 23, 2026, defending champion Thailand faced off against Malaysia. Thailand had comfortably defeated South Korea 2-0 in the semifinals, while Malaysia beat Indonesia 2-0, with a packed home crowd supporting the hosts.

In the first match, Thai Team A featuring Phontep Thinsaibanbon, Marukindorn Phanmakorn, and Jirasak Phakbua lost to Malaysia 1-2 sets (9-15, 15-13, 12-15). Thai Team B, composed of Ratsanaphong Nonthakorot, Wuthianan Kamsenah, and Thanapol Satyuen, bounced back with a 2-0 victory (15-6, 15-13) to tie the series 1-1, forcing a decisive third match.

In the final match, Thai Team C fielded Chakkarit Thinsaibanbon, Wichai Temkorot, and Phutawan Sophaa. Thailand protested the decision and refused to continue playing, demanding either the point be awarded back or the referee be replaced. The Thai team ultimately forfeited the match due to the team staff's refusal to continue under these conditions. Reports indicate the Thai Sepaktakraw Association plans to file an official protest.

23 May Khaosod

On May 23, 2025, as part of a crackdown on foreign-linked criminal activities, the Tourist Police conducted a raid on a bar and karaoke establishment in downtown Chiang Mai. Under the direction of Police Major General Olarb Iamprapphas, commander of Tourist Police Region 2, and Police Colonel Pison Truamdi, the investigation team led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Avirut Sukhaem, along with Chiang Phueak Police Station officers, inspected the venue. Officers discovered 12 Myanmar nationals employed as musicians and staff. Although all possessed valid work permits, the permits did not match the employers listed in their documentation, violating regulations requiring workers to notify the registrar of their employer and workplace within 15 days of employment. The raid followed complaints about excessive noise from the establishment and reports that it served as a hub for Myanmar migrant worker networks. According to preliminary investigation, the bar has been operating since the Songkran festival period, primarily serving Myanmar clients and migrant laborers, with a Thai manager overseeing operations. All suspects have been handed over to Chiang Phueak Police Station for legal proceedings. Authorities are currently tracking financial flows, employers, business owners, and capital backers involved in the operation.

Major Fire Engulfs Used Car Lot in Samut Sakhon, Nine Vehicles Destroyed

A fire destroyed three vehicles and damaged six others at a used car lot in Samut Sakhon on May 23, with the blaze believed to have started from faulty wiring or an engine spark in one of the parked cars.

Major Fire Engulfs Used Car Lot in Samut Sakhon, Nine Vehicles Destroyed
23 May Khaosod

A fire broke out at a used car and motorcycle dealership lot in Samut Sakhon at approximately 7:30 PM on May 23, 2025. The facility, located in Soi U Preecha connecting Rama II and Ekkachai roads in Nadi subdistrict, Muang district, Samut Sakhon, received rapid response from fire brigades dispatched from Nadi municipal authorities and surrounding areas.

The tent-style lot contained numerous vehicles awaiting sale. Fortunately, the lot manager and staff managed to evacuate nearly all vehicles, except for three cars that were completely engulfed in flames—those parked at the rear of the lot. Six additional vehicles sustained minor damage, bringing total damage to nine vehicles. Firefighters controlled the blaze in approximately 30 minutes.

Initial investigation revealed the lot typically maintains a single overnight watchman. However, at the time of the fire, no one was present—the owner had returned to his residence about 30 minutes prior, and the watchman had stepped out for a meal with the gate securely locked. A nearby resident discovered the smoke and flames and immediately contacted police. The vehicles are used models operating on gasoline fuel.

A neighboring witness reported viewing security camera footage showing smoke gradually emerging from the front area under the hood of the middle parked vehicle before flames erupted, subsequently spreading to two adjacent vehicles.

Police will coordinate with forensic specialists to investigate the cause, though preliminary assessment suggests the fire may have originated from engine compartment systems or faulty wiring in the middle vehicle, possibly from an electrical spark.

Tragedy as 13-Year-Old Boy Drowns While Attempting to Rescue Struggling Friend

A 13-year-old boy drowned while attempting to rescue his 14-year-old friend who was struggling in strong currents at Tharuean Pier in Bangkok; both bodies were recovered after more than two hours of searching.

Tragedy as 13-Year-Old Boy Drowns While Attempting to Rescue Struggling Friend
23 May Khaosod

A 13-year-old boy jumped into the water to rescue his 14-year-old female friend who was drowning, but was pulled under by her and both disappeared beneath the surface. Relatives lit incense at a shrine before the bodies were recovered.

At 5:00 PM on May 23, 2569, Police Lieutenant Colonel Wiresak Srivauray, head of Tharuean Police Station, received a report of two children drowning near Tharuean Pier on Soi Kasetrat, Khlong Toei District, Bangkok. He proceeded to investigate with divers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation. At the private pier, a 15-year-old friend named Chatchai gave a statement that he, his friend Pho (13 years old, a first-year student at Nonthaburi Wittaya School), and friend Waep (14 years old) had come to swim at the pier. He and Pho could swim, but Waep could not.

Before the incident, he swam about 20 meters from the dock toward the shore, then Waep attempted to follow him. However, due to the strong current, Waep began to drown and called for help. When Pho saw this, he jumped in to rescue her, but Waep grabbed and pulled him under as well.

After learning of the incident, two teams of Ruamkatanyu Foundation divers took turns searching. Relatives of the children lit incense at a shrine asking to find them. After more than two hours, rescuers found both bodies locked in an embrace approximately 50 meters from the dock. The bodies were handed over to the foundation and sent to Siriraj Hospital's forensic medicine department for detailed examination.
