Udon Thani City Gate Incomplete for World Flora Opening
The Udon Thani city gate on Highway 24 remained unfinished for the World Flora fair opening after two years of construction, with only decorative details and landscaping pending due to contractor delays.
The Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning accepts criticism that the Udon Thani city gate, located on Mittraphap Road (Highway 24) in front of Udon Thani City Municipality, was not completed by the opening of the "World Flora" fair. Many locals viewed the structure as seemingly finished yet unfinished, with an unattractive design. Reporters visiting the site found the main structure complete, with only decorative details and landscaping remaining. The gate itself was adorned only with provincial banners, while front and rear entrance landscaping was unfinished, with construction materials scattered across the area and some workers attending to finishing touches.
Local resident Somchai, who lives near the gate, said construction has been ongoing for about two years, with the latest phase this year. He noted workers only stopped a day or two ago, and a lane closure had caused moderate traffic congestion.
Later, reporters met Siam Butroyojantho, Director of the Udon Thani Public Works and Town & Country Planning Office, who explained that he shares the public's desire for a beautiful, timely completion. He had personally committed to finishing within 80 days under normal conditions, but contractor agility issues caused delays. He insisted the project is not yet finished — detailed work remains, which is why it looks unsightly. At least the signage lettering has now been installed. He emphasized the problem lies with contractor and worker performance.
"As the representative of the Department of Public Works, I must ensure completion. I am not discouraged and will do my best. Wait until it is fully finished before criticizing; I welcome the feedback," he said.
