Villagers Seek Lottery Luck at Sacred Cat Shrine
Villagers are flocking to a temple in Ang Thong Province to seek lottery blessings from the preserved body of Tohn, a legendary black-and-white cat believed to predict winning numbers even after death.
Villagers are gathering at Wat Mai Khok Marum in Muang Tai District, Ang Thong Province, in the final days before the lottery draw, seeking blessings from the spirit of Tohn—a large black-and-white cat whose preserved body has been installed near the golden takian trees. The cat, once famous for allegedly predicting winning lottery numbers while alive, has attracted a devoted following even after death. Worshippers light incense to request lucky numbers, with 186 and the pair 106–48 being popular choices this round.
One local woman, known as Pa Nom, revealed that she has already won the lottery three consecutive draws by obtaining numbers this way and is hoping for a fourth win. Tohn originally arrived hidden inside a hollow takian tree brought to the temple from Suphan Buri Province and became beloved by villagers, monks, and visitors alike.
The temple currently houses over 50 golden takian trees, collected from various locations after local residents reported finding them and offered them to the temple. Many villagers believe that if a takian tree is discovered on their property, it must be donated to the temple so that residents can pay respects and request good fortune according to local tradition.
