The first night of the merit ceremony for "Hlun Solo," or Bawornthad Pungsuk, a famous travel YouTuber, was held with the Faculty of Political Science at Chulalongkorn University and the alumni association serving as hosts, alongside relatives, government agencies, and neighbors. The family has been deeply touched by the outpouring of support from neighbors and fan club members.

On August 8, 2025, the funeral ceremony took place at the family home in Samoei District, Kalasin Province. Throughout the day, neighbors and fans continued to arrive to offer their condolences to the grandmother, Buasong Pungsuk, and the family. A 53-year-old relative and cook, Chan-Phen, noted that in addition to wreaths from relatives, neighbors, government agencies, and the public, fan club members brought rice, dry goods, pork, fresh fish, fruits, and drinking water to help the family prepare meals for mourners throughout the day.

The meals served were traditional Isan dishes such as som tam pla ra, fried chicken, fried fish, fried pork, and sticky rice, prepared by volunteer cooks from the community. Despite the sorrowful atmosphere, the dedication of those helping the family was evident in their committed efforts.

Many fans expressed that beyond Hlun's YouTube success, they came to help because they admired his integrity, gratitude, and filial devotion to his grandmother and family. Despite coming from a poor background, he remained dedicated to his studies and earned a full scholarship to study at Chulalongkorn University. His creative presentation of travel content exploring destinations around the world inspired many who could not travel themselves, making him a role model for both young and old.

A 59-year-old fan from Nako District, Kalasin, stated that she was proud and deeply admired Hlun, considering him a humanitarian figure worthy of emulation for his ability to share stories and places from around the world with people who might never have the opportunity to visit them.

The first night's chanting ceremony begins at 7:00 p.m., hosted by the Faculty of Political Science and its alumni association, with Associate Professor Sirat Adsukul, Vice Dean of the Faculty, representing the university. The ceremony includes participation from local government officials, fan club members, relatives, and neighbors. Merit-making activities continue from August 8-10, 2025, with the cremation ceremony scheduled for August 11 at Wat Rang Si Chatchawal in Samoei District, Kalasin Province.

On August 8, 2025, the Mae Kham Temple committee in Mae Chan District, Chiang Rai Province, along with Buddhists from three villages, held a meeting to investigate the disappearance of large sums from the temple's bank account. The meeting was chaired by senior monks and attended by district officials and police.

According to the temple and Mae Chan police, in 2025 someone impersonated a police officer, presented fake credentials claiming to be from the Royal Thai Police, and provided fraudulent documents allegedly from a Rayong police station. The caller claimed the abbot was involved in money laundering, then instructed him to disclose bank details and transfer funds for verification purposes.

The abbot believed the scam and transferred money repeatedly. Over time, he received multiple follow-up requests for bail payments and other charges, totaling 207 transfers from January 2025 to July 2025. In all, approximately 8.7 million baht from both temple funds and the abbot's personal savings were sent to 66 different bank accounts. When the abbot grew suspicious and alerted Mae Chan police, investigators confirmed it was a scam perpetrated by a call center gang or scammer network. A report has been filed and the case is under investigation, with community meetings planned to update residents.

At Wat Thahnod temple in Ayutthaya's Nakhon Luang district on August 8, 2025, provincial governor Chawanin Wongsathitchirakan presided over the royal water anointment ceremony for "Teacher Muay," or Tiwaporn Wanit, age 42. Royal flower garlands from His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen were placed before the coffin, and the body was received into royal patronage. The ceremony drew Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Yosachon Wongsawat, the minister of higher education, science, research and innovation; provincial administrative officials; civil servants and teachers from Nonthaburi and Ayutthaya provinces; family members; and many mourners.

The temple atmosphere was filled with sorrow as former and current students of Teacher Muay traveled from Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Pathum Thani provinces to attend the rites and express their grief. Nichcharee Suriyachaimaneekhul, age 26, a former student, said she was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the incident and its impact on both teachers and students. She recalled being Teacher Muay's student from grades 7 through 12 and emphasized the counselor's approachable nature, kindness, and dedication to helping students with educational and personal concerns, particularly regarding scholarships.

"Teacher Muay was someone students could easily approach with any problem, and she would help with all her heart," Nichcharee said. "All the teachers at school do their best because they care about and want to help their students." Sutthadon Srirungsang, age 18, another former student, described how Teacher Muay guided him toward a vocational education path suited to his strengths when he was uncertain about his academic direction. He credited her with providing recommendations for schools, exam preparation strategies, and study materials that led to his successful vocational entrance.

Sutthadon urged current students facing difficulties to consult their teachers. "Teacher Muay helped light the way for my future," he said. "Teachers are always ready to listen and help, especially counselors like her who dedicate themselves to guiding students."

Thailand Orders Enhanced Security at Schools and Public Areas
8 Aug Khaosod

The Ministry of Interior has issued an urgent directive to provincial governors nationwide to implement four escalated security measures at educational institutions and public spaces, with strict firearm controls and coordination among police and relevant agencies. On August 8, Arthit Sampajaroenat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, revealed details of a shooting incident that occurred at a school in Nonthaburi Province, which resulted in multiple deaths and injuries. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Interior Minister ordered an immediate escalation of security measures and firearm controls to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

Arthi stated that the Ministry of Interior has directed provincial governors nationwide to integrate administrative mechanisms, police forces, and relevant agencies in implementing four comprehensive safety measures for lives and property in educational institutions and public areas:

1. Provincial governors, acting as chairs of provincial education committees, are to work with provincial education offices, education area offices, schools, and related units to strengthen security at educational institutions. This includes monitoring individuals or behaviors that could lead to violence, controlling access points, preparing for emergencies, and providing mental health support to prevent school violence, coordinated with local administration, police, and area agencies with context-appropriate surveillance and prevention measures.

2. Integration of provincial police and related units to establish checkpoints and joint patrol operations with regular inspections in designated timeframes, targeting prevention and interception of illegal firearms in public spaces, contraband in risk areas, and increasing patrol frequency on key routes and risk zones. Violations must be prosecuted strictly according to applicable laws.

3. Development of area-based operational plans identifying risk areas and sensitive locations requiring special monitoring, including schools, government facilities, public event venues, community centers, and major transportation routes.

4. Coordination between administration and police to gather intelligence and monitor groups or events with potential for violence through integration with parents, schools, communities, village headmen, local government organizations, and civil society networks. Early-stage assessment and prevention are mandatory, with immediate escalation to police and relevant agencies upon detection of dangerous situations, and continuous evaluation of operational outcomes.

Thailand Criticizes UN Envoy's Cambodia Rights Report

Thailand criticized a UN envoy's Cambodia human rights report for lacking balance and making unverified allegations against Thailand instead of focusing solely on Cambodia's situation. Deputy PM Sihasak Phuangketkeow said the UN special rap

Thailand Criticizes UN Envoy's Cambodia Rights Report
8 Aug Khaosod

Thailand has criticized a United Nations special rapporteur's report on Cambodia, accusing the UN rights mechanism of lacking balance and relying on distorted information while exceeding its mandate. In an August 7 letter to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, said the government was deeply disappointed by the credibility and accountability of the end-of-mission statement issued by Tom Andrews, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, following his official visit from July 20–31.

Thailand said the statement should have focused primarily on Cambodia's human rights situation but instead made several allegations against Thailand. The government argued that the approach exceeded the UN Human Rights Council's mandate and criticized Andrews for failing to give Thailand sufficient opportunity to present its facts and views before the statement and press conference were released. Thailand also accused the statement of containing several unverified and distorted claims, arguing this violated the Code of Conduct for Special Procedures mandate holders, which requires ethical, professional, and objective conduct based on internationally recognized human rights standards.

Thailand said it had regularly provided relevant information to the UN High Commissioner's office through multiple channels, including letters and statements to the UN Human Rights Council. The government argued that failing to consider the facts and views of all relevant parties caused the statement to depart from principles of neutrality, impartiality, and fact-based reporting. Thailand also expressed concern that the statement had been used to fuel political narratives by interested parties.

Regarding the Thailand-Cambodia conflict, Thailand said it had already informed the UN High Commissioner in Geneva that the conflict and its consequences did not originate with Thailand. According to the letter, Thailand stated that Cambodia initiated the conflict by attacking civilian targets and hospitals in Thailand without provocation on July 24, 2026. Thailand said the attacks resulted in Thai civilian deaths and injuries and forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes. The government said these issues were not reflected in the special rapporteur's statement, which it accused of presenting distorted facts and statistics. Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs had already issued a separate statement addressing the matter.

School Shooting in Nonthaburi Leaves 7 Dead, 22 Injured

A teenage gunman killed seven people at a Nonthaburi secondary school and wounded 22 others after fatally shooting his grandparents at home, marking Thailand's second major school shooting since 2023.

School Shooting in Nonthaburi Leaves 7 Dead, 22 Injured
8 Aug Khaosod

A shooting rampage at a secondary school in Nonthaburi Province has killed seven teachers and students, with 22 others wounded. The incident has sent shockwaves throughout Thailand.

Before attacking the school, the teenage gunman fatally shot his grandparents at home, killing two people, then brought weapons and ammunition to carry out the school shooting.

This tragedy involving youth is the second major shooting incident since a similar attack at a Bangkok shopping mall in 2023 that killed three people. Society is now asking what causes young people to resort to violence and lose their sense of restraint, demanding answers that can serve as lessons for the future.

In this case, police, teachers, and school officials are gathering evidence to investigate and clarify the facts. At the same time, they are working to provide psychological rehabilitation to survivors and appropriate compensation to families of the deceased and injured.

The Ministry of Education must take the lead in coordinating with other relevant agencies to establish measures that prevent violence from its roots. Families, communities, and religious organizations should participate in social refinement and foster positive values and awareness from childhood.

However, creating violence and hatred in society extends beyond physical force and harsh words—it also includes neglect, indifference, exclusion, mockery, and embarrassment. Any action that makes a person feel worthless and degrades their human dignity can leave deep psychological wounds that lead to ongoing problems.

Moving forward, schools should be genuinely safe spaces with equality and justice, protecting individuals from bullying and humiliation that can leave them feeling isolated and abandoned. Educational institutions, parent-teacher associations, student peer groups, and surrounding communities must work together to prevent and address violence from the start.

UN Envoy Says Thailand Ignored Draft on Border Issues

UN envoy Tom Andrews defended his report on Cambodia's human rights situation, saying Thailand received a draft on border conflict sections two days before publication but did not respond.

UN Envoy Says Thailand Ignored Draft on Border Issues
8 Aug Khaosod

BANGKOK — UN Special Rapporteur Tom Andrews has defended his recent statement on the human rights situation in Cambodia, saying the Thai government was given an advance draft of sections concerning the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict but did not respond before its publication.

Andrews made the remarks in a Facebook post on 7 August, responding to criticism from the Thai government over his work following his latest mission to Cambodia.

He said he welcomed comments and feedback on his statement, including views from the Thai government.

"That is why I sent the Thai government a draft of the sections relating to the border conflict two days before the statement was released," Andrews said.

He said the draft included references to the displacement of Cambodian people.

"While I did not receive a response from the Thai government to that communication, I remain very open and eager to discuss the Thai government's views," he said.

Andrews also addressed public criticism from Thai officials over his estimate that around 650,000 Cambodians had been displaced by the conflict, including his reference to some displaced people being in Thailand.

He said he acknowledged Thailand's position on the figures but maintained that the number came from UN reporting.

His use of the term "displaced" was based on human rights concerns and was not dependent on claims of territorial sovereignty, he said.

Andrews said he would prepare a full report on the human rights situation in Cambodia for submission to the UN Human Rights Council next month.

He said he would contact the Thai government again while preparing the report and hoped to engage with Thai officials to hear their views before the report was published.

The UN rapporteur also stressed the importance of resolving the border conflict quickly and peacefully so that people could return home, live in stable and safe conditions and benefit from economic opportunities created by cross-border trade.

Andrews praised the Thai government for publicly expressing its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights, saying this provided an important foundation for dialogue.

"As I stated in my statement, I am eager to work with both the Cambodian and Thai governments to address the human rights concerns arising from the conflict, including the displacement of civilians," he said.

"Whether they are Thai or Cambodian, human rights matter."

Local Journalist Assaulted by Deputy Police Chief in Khon Kaen

A journalist was hospitalized with serious injuries after being attacked by a deputy police chief at Ban Phai Police Station in Khon Kaen on August 7, and plans to file an assault complaint.

Local Journalist Assaulted by Deputy Police Chief in Khon Kaen
8 Aug Khaosod

On August 8, 2025, at Ban Phai Hospital in Khon Kaen Province, Police Colonel Rakchai Rueangcharoen, commander of Ban Phai Police Station, visited 42-year-old Trichep, a local journalist and administrator of the Facebook page "Ban Phai People News," who had been assaulted and suffered a severe gash above his right eyebrow requiring 12 stitches. His neck also bore scratch marks and claw wounds from fingernails. Doctors advised him to remain hospitalized for observation, and he stated that a deputy police chief attacked him at Ban Phai Police Station the previous evening.

Trichep revealed that he is the owner of the "Ban Phai People News" social media page and is part of the media network of Khon Kaen Province's television and newspaper journalists. Around 7 p.m., he parked his car at the front of the investigation office to attend a village elder's merit-making ceremony held at the Ban Phai District Office grounds. A deputy police chief he knew called him over to chat at a marble table in the back area, where two other officers were already seated. After about five minutes, the deputy police chief suddenly locked his neck with intense force. Trichep told him to stop as he couldn't breathe, and even the officers at the table told him to release him. When officers began to stand and intervene, he let go.

Feeling this might be serious, Trichep attempted to leave the table and walk toward the investigation office entrance. As he reached the door, he heard the deputy chief say, "Is this just joking around, or are you upset?" Trichep replied, "Sir, you're being too rough. I need to leave," but as he walked out, the deputy chief locked his neck a second time. Trichep lost consciousness until the two officers who had been seated at the table came with tissues to wipe blood from what he initially thought was his nose, but blood continued flowing. He later realized the wound was above his right eyebrow. Officers called municipal rescue services to provide first aid. While waiting for the ambulance, Trichep heard the deputy chief shouting loudly, and when uniformed officers arrived to investigate, the deputy chief retreated into his office. An ambulance then transported him to Ban Phai Hospital.

Trichep said he had known the deputy chief for a long time and had worked with him frequently, having a close relationship. They had never quarreled before and would joke and tease each other as acquaintances normally do. He never expected this incident to occur. After being discharged from the hospital, he plans to file an assault complaint at Ban Phai Police Station immediately.

School Shooting Tragedy Exposes Failures at Home, School, and Society

A 14-year-old boy in Thailand shot and killed his grandparents and then opened fire at his school, killing multiple teachers and students before taking his own life. Investigators found he faced academic stress, bullying, family breakdown,

School Shooting Tragedy Exposes Failures at Home, School, and Society
8 Aug Khaosod

A devastating incident shook Thai society when a ninth-grade boy opened fire throughout a school building with a firearm, killing multiple teachers, staff, and students. Schools should be safe places where children learn and enjoy friendships, yet this horrific reality shattered that ideal.

Before the school attack, the 14-year-old shot and killed his grandparents, who had cared for him his entire life at home. He then brought the gun to the school and created terror within the educational institution. He ultimately shot himself, preventing anyone from understanding his true motivations, stress, or pressures.

Stakeholders must collaborate to identify the root causes and develop prevention strategies, creating case studies for parents and teachers to prevent future school incidents—particularly from well-behaved students no one suspected were capable of such acts.

Initial investigations reveal the boy faced academic stress, felt overly strict discipline both at school and home, experienced bullying and harassment from peers without support, became withdrawn and socially isolated, had a strained relationship with his grandparents, and became fixated on computer games and foreign school shooting footage.

A critical factor is that the boy came from a broken family; his parents divorced and his grandparents raised him from childhood. A lack of sufficient family warmth appears to be a fundamental issue requiring serious attention. Children deprived of love and warmth, born without knowing affection, grow into adults who fail to value anyone's life. Many children separated from parents face causes rooted in unprepared marriages and economic hardship, forcing parents into survival-mode employment. Society must address both stable family formation and economic inequality through better government policies and nationwide development.

Schools must become a second home for children, with teachers serving as psychological support and trusted mentors. A recurring question after such incidents is: where did the weapon come from? In this case, the registered firearm belonged to the grandfather and was stored at home. The critical issue is inadequate firearm storage—the gun was kept so unsecured that the child discovered it, sneaked it out, and had spare ammunition readily available.

The weapon was a semi-automatic 9mm pistol, compact and fitted to a hand, capable of loading 15 rounds and firing repeatedly. The government under PM Anuto has suspended firearm permits; anyone who owns a gun must store it at home, but must do so securely and keep it hidden so children cannot access it secretly.

This tragic incident requires comprehensive solutions: addressing family life at home, school environments, social violence, and economic hardship. All areas must be reformed.
