2h ago Khaosod

The Director-General of the Department of Local Administration signed orders reassigning Phuket's provincial deputy governor, five district officers, and other officials to other positions to open an investigation following complaints from entertainment business operators about alleged bribery demands. On May 20, 2569, Nurichaa Kosasivilai issued the transfer orders to ensure a rapid, transparent, and fair investigation process for all involved parties.

The action was prompted by social media reports of complaints from residents and entertainment venue representatives in Phuket province, which could damage the Interior Ministry and Department of Local Administration's image and public confidence in government. The Patong Beach Entertainment Business Association previously held an evening rally on May 13 to oppose extortion demands and call for fair licensing resolution and investigation processes, displaying signs condemning high-ranking provincial administrative officials.

On that same day, Weerwichaya Krueasombat, chairman of the Patong Beach Entertainment Business Association, and his delegation met with Prime Minister Anusit Charnveerakul during his official visit to investigate encroachment on Nakkhikhao National Reserved Forest and the Freedom Beach land case. The week prior, Nurichaa had summoned all involved officials for clarification before issuing today's urgent orders.

The transfer orders, Department of Local Administration Order No. 1512/2569 dated May 20, 2569, are effective from May 25 to June 24, 2569, and assign five officials: Rung Reueang Thimabut (Phuket Provincial Deputy Governor) to the College of Local Administration; Siwat Ravankul (Phuket City District Officer) to the Local Administration Management Office; Wilailik Reungphon (Thalang District Officer) to the Planning and Academic Affairs Division; Akkrapol Sutthirak Jitsupap (Kathu District Officer) to the Communications Division; and Danai Suksukol (Phuket Provincial Protection Officer) to the Department Secretary's Office.

A teacher at Ban Rang Muang School in Jombueng District, Ratchaburi Province was deeply moved after a home visit revealed that a first-grade student still wore his kindergarten uniform to school. The student lives with his deaf mother, Ms. Renu Sopha, 46, and grandmother in a dilapidated single-story house with crumbling wooden doors and rusted corrugated metal that leaks during rain. The family is in severe poverty following the recent death of the student's father.

On May 20, 2569, teacher Rujisa Noisanthi discovered the family's dire circumstances. The mother works temporary odd jobs to support the household but faces severe limitations due to being deaf and receiving only minimal disability benefits. When school began, the mother was unaware her son had advanced to first grade and could not afford to buy him a proper uniform.

Moved by the situation, Rujisa consulted with colleagues and organized donations for school uniforms, shoes, and a backpack. The teacher group also pooled money to buy rice and provided 800 baht for immediate living expenses. The student's academic performance is good, showing strong effort and dedication despite his family's hardship.

Those wishing to assist can donate through Kasikornbank, Jombueng Branch, Account name: Ms. Renu Sopha, Account number: 020484283914. For more information, contact 0636430845.

Variegated Syngonium Podophyllum Plants Find International Success with Exports to Japan, China, Europe, and Middle East

Thai ornamental plant grower Udom Thitiwattanaskul exports variegated Syngonium Podophyllum plants globally, with 70% of his production reaching Japan, China, Europe, and the Middle East, though the rare variegation only succeeds in about 1

2h ago Khaosod

Variegated Syngonium Podophyllum plants are gaining international popularity, with approximately 70% of production exported to Japan, China, Europe, and the Middle East, while 30% is sold domestically. A reporter recently interviewed Udom Thitiwattanaskul, owner of Udom Garden in Don Klang District, Damnoen Saduak, Ratchaburi Province, after he successfully cultivated "Syngonium Podophyllum" plants that have attracted significant interest both domestically and internationally, particularly the variegated variety. Udom explained that producing variegated plants is challenging, with only about a 16% success rate, or approximately 1 in 6 plants. Sometimes, even if the parent plant shows clear variegation patterns, the propagated offspring may revert to normal green color. Currently, the most popular colors in global markets fall into two main groups: pink-purple tones and yellow-orange-red tones. These color shades can change depending on environmental conditions, fertilizers, and vitamins used in cultivation. The garden's current market distribution is approximately 70% foreign exports and 30% domestic sales, with primary markets in the Middle East, Europe, China, and Japan. Exports adhere to strict standards—plants must display continuous variegation from small to mature size, with no "green loss" or "black loss" defects, and must be grown under natural light only without LED grow lights for color enhancement. During long transportation periods, artificially enhanced colors fade and become unacceptable to customers. European customers prefer smaller plants for easier packaging, while Middle Eastern customers prefer larger specimens. A critical requirement for Middle Eastern exports is that no coconut husk or shredded coconut material can be attached to the plants. Although variegated Syngonium Podophyllum plants require 1.5 to 2 years of cultivation before they're ready for export, their high market demand means that even young plants showing clear variegation patterns are immediately pre-ordered by customers. This has become another lucrative emerging plant in the post-COVID era with continuous value generation potential.

Historic First: 'Royal Thai Dress on the World Stage' Exhibition Opens in Paris

Thailand's historic Royal Thai Dress exhibition opened in Paris this week, showcasing over 200 pieces including royal gowns and accessories that blend traditional Thai textiles with contemporary design. The collection, developed by Queen Si

3h ago Khaosod

The historic exhibition 'La Mode en Majesté: Royal Thai Dress from Tradition to Modernity' is now open at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France, from May 13 to November 1, 2025.

In 1960, when King Bhumibol Adulyadej made an official state visit to the United States and European countries, Queen Sirikit conceived the idea of developing the 'Royal Thai Dress' as Thailand's national costume for women. Observing that despite Thailand's beautiful and distinctive clothing culture, there was no clearly defined national dress recognized on the international stage, the Queen incorporated Thai silk and traditional local fabrics rooted in local wisdom, designing them with contemporary elegance. This became a crucial model for promoting Thai identity to international audiences and elevating Thai textiles and handicrafts to global recognition.

Today, this royal vision continues to be preserved and developed by Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, who plays a key role in conserving and advancing Thai textiles to the international fashion and contemporary design stage. She serves as patron of the 'Royal Thai Dress on the World Stage' exhibition, presented from May 13 to November 1, 2025, at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris through collaboration with the Support Institute for Thai Craft (SACIT), the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles, the Royal Thai Embassy in Paris, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.

The exhibition celebrates the 340th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 170th anniversary of formal diplomatic ties between Thailand and France (1856–2026). It displays over 200 pieces including royal gowns, skirts, and accessories designed by French designer Pierre Balmain in collaboration with the prestigious Lesage embroidery atelier, alongside Thai designers. The exhibition focuses on the development of royal court dress and its representation on the world stage, featuring ensembles worn by Queen Sirikit, Queen Suthida, and Princess Sirivannavari, along with eight variations of the Royal Thai Dress paired with valuable Thai handicrafts. These showcase the refinement of Thai wisdom and cultural heritage sustained over centuries, and serve as momentum for proposing the 'Royal Thai Dress' as an intangible cultural heritage representative of humanity to UNESCO in 2025.

No Way Around It – Suspense Until the Final Minute: Which Channel Will Air the World Cup?

Thailand's government says securing 2026 World Cup broadcast rights is nearly impossible due to FIFA's 1.7 billion baht licensing fee, worsened by inconvenient late-night scheduling that discourages sponsors. Negotiations may still reduce t

3h ago Khaosod

The Thai government, represented by Information and Broadcasting Minister Supamat Issarapakdi, has essentially acknowledged that securing broadcast rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is nearly impossible due to licensing costs reaching 1.7 billion baht—an amount incompatible with Thailand's current economic difficulties. The tournament's scheduling in the United States, Canada, and Mexico creates a timing mismatch with Thai viewers, since matches will air during late night and early morning hours. This discourages sponsors and private businesses from investing, making advertising difficult to secure. The plans have effectively collapsed. However, Minister Supamat later stated there's still a possibility for negotiations to reduce the price to acceptable levels. Reports suggest FIFA might agree to lower rates during the final negotiations before the tournament begins, preferring a discount sale to an unsold product. Major obstacles plague this broadcast effort, particularly the North American venue's incompatible timing compared to European tournaments that suited Thailand's market better. When the World Cup moves to the Americas, local sports-related businesses gain no benefit, and entertainment venues can't organize viewing parties—how can people celebrate football over early morning drinks? These factors make broadcasting the 2026 World Cup extremely unlikely. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul deserves sympathy for his earlier promise of free World Cup access for all Thais, but circumstances prove more challenging than before. Public reaction has been mixed: football enthusiasts expressed frustration that this would be Thailand's first World Cup without free live broadcasts, while others welcomed avoiding the billion-baht licensing cost during economic hardship. If FIFA relents and drops prices, Thais might watch through normal broadcast channels. If not, viewers will resort to 'natural channels' instead. The suspense continues until the final moments.
