27-Year-Old Injured in Explosion, Blast Fragments Embedded in Body
A 27-year-old man in Samut Prakan suffered severe shrapnel injuries from an explosion at his home on August 23, with investigators suspecting a ping-pong bomb though the exact cause remains unclear.
Samut Prakan rescue center responded to a report of a male explosion victim on August 23 at 10 p.m. at a home in Samrong Nuea subdistrict, Muang district. They arrived to find 27-year-old Wutthiphat with multiple shrapnel wounds covering his body, bleeding heavily and in great pain. He was given first aid and rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Investigators found debris scattered across the front of the house and recovered a black tape fragment believed to be part of the explosive device. Preliminary suspicion points to a ping-pong bomb, though detailed examination is still pending to confirm the device type and actual cause of the incident. CCTV cameras did not capture the moment of explosion, but the blast was heard across the neighborhood with enough force to startle many people.
The victim's grandmother, who was washing dishes inside the house at ground level when the blast occurred, said she did not see the incident clearly and heard no vehicle or person passing beforehand, so she cannot confirm whether someone threw an explosive device or if one detonated inside. The force of the blast occurred near where she was, but she escaped injury and only experienced shock.
A neighbor who witnessed part of the event reported seeing the victim hit something before it struck objects below, but the witness did not know what it was before it exploded. The neighbor saw no one throwing anything into the house. The victim's younger sibling found him lying in front of the house bleeding heavily; he could only say he was in pain and needed hospital care, but could not provide details of what happened.
Eyewitnesses confirmed no one saw the moment of the incident clearly, so it remains unclear whether an explosive was thrown from outside or detonated inside the property. Police cordoned off the area and coordinated with relevant agencies to examine evidence. One initial theory suggests the victim may have been carrying an explosive device that detonated after a fall, though this is only preliminary speculation. A second person, a friend of the 27-year-old, sustained minor injuries. Officers plan to interview all witnesses and gather further statements at Samrong Nuea police station to establish the facts and determine the true cause of the incident.
