Amnesty Law Covers Political Cases 2005-2025, All Cases Need Committee Review
Thailand's new Amnesty Law covering political cases from 2005-2025 takes effect, with a government-appointed committee to review all qualifying cases including those still under investigation.
At 9:10 a.m. on August 25, 2025, Prime Minister's Office Minister Parathorn Parisnanantakul announced that the Promote Social Peace Act (Amnesty Law) 2025 is now in effect. A committee will be established to determine which cases qualify for amnesty under the law. The committee will include representatives from the government, parliament, and civil service, appointed by the Prime Minister. When asked whether future cases and those under investigation would be considered, Parathorn said the committee will review cases occurring between 2005 and 2025. He stressed that all cases, not just unclear ones, will be examined. The law primarily targets political cases arising from demonstrations, though the exact number of people who will qualify remains unknown, as some cases may have already closed.
