Social media has turned its attention to Joy Chamchuree, a legendary actress famous for playing villains in Thai dramas, after her son was arrested for riding a jet ski in flooded areas near Phetchburi Road in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district and posting the stunt online. Police from Makkasan Station tracked down the jet ski rider, identified as 28-year-old Sorn, along with content creator Prao. Both claimed they acted without full understanding of the situation, wanting to bring smiles to flood victims, and said they were unaware of Thai cultural norms. Investigators charged Sorn with committing acts causing public embarrassment or annoyance and obstructing traffic without authorization from traffic officials, while also charging Prao as an accomplice. A court ordered Sorn to 15 days in custody pending a one-year prison sentence and confiscation of the jet ski.
The incident has prompted social media users to revisit the life and career of Joy Chamchuree Chaidchom, now 58, a native of Udon Thani province who entered the entertainment industry at age 17. She competed in the Miss Thailand pageant in 1986 and later won first runner-up and the photographer's award at the Miss Universe of Nymphae pageant that same year. She began her film career in 1987 with a leading role in "Ten More Days Before the World Ends" and went on to become a television star, initially in supporting roles before rising to fame as a beautiful villain in dramas like "Kitchen Scholar's Love" alongside Tuk Duang Ata.
After becoming famous for playing villains and dramatic roles, Joy appeared in numerous dramas including "Love Formula," "Bua Lang Nam," "Heir to Power," and others throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. She even earned a Golden Television Award nomination for her role in the channel 9 drama "Fiery Love," establishing herself as both a beautiful and talented actress. She later married and left the industry to focus on family life, only occasionally returning for small roles in productions such as "Sticky Rice Fighter" on channel 7 and "Magic of Mother Khlong" on channel 31.
