Thai Actress Amy Shares HPV Infection Journey, Urges Screening

Thai actress Amy Lyn Pratthum shared her seven-year HPV infection journey at a Bangkok awareness campaign, urging all genders to get screened and vaccinated despite misconceptions that the virus indicates promiscuity.

Thai Actress Amy Shares HPV Infection Journey, Urges Screening
6 Aug Khaosod

Thai actress Amy Lyn Pratthum attended the launch of an HPV awareness campaign at Lumpini Park's Aerobic Court, Gate 4, sharing her personal experience of discovering HPV infection at age 25 and managing it for seven years before full recovery. She hopes her story will motivate people of all genders to recognize the importance of screening and vaccination against HPV, noting that cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death among Thai women. Amy revealed she has since changed her lifestyle, reducing alcohol consumption and being more selective about social events to maintain her health and energy for spending time with her grandchildren, who bring happiness and color to her family. She clarified she has no plans to have biological children, as she feels complete with her grandchildren, and her husband Si Siwaratana stated they plan to leave their estate to them.

Amy emphasized that contracting HPV once does not define someone as promiscuous, as a single sexual encounter carries infection risk for both men and women across all genders and sexual orientations. She encouraged everyone to undergo regular screening, noting that while condoms reduce risk, they do not provide 100 percent protection, and many people unknowingly carry the virus without symptoms. She also addressed the misconception that only women are affected, explaining that men can carry and transmit HPV without knowing. Amy confirmed that vaccination is possible even after infection, though efficacy may be reduced, and it can protect against other HPV strains. She disclosed that she was diagnosed at age 25 while newly dating her husband and chose to receive the vaccine in addition to monitoring, allowing both of them to understand the infection better and motivated her to share this knowledge with others.

A 15-year-old boy was assaulted after his friend courteously reminded another motorcyclist that he had forgotten to turn off his turn signal. The other party became enraged, ordered them to pull over, and then attacked them with a group of friends, leaving the teenager injured. Police are actively tracking down the perpetrators to press charges.

At 3:20 a.m. on August 6, 2025, a Facebook user posted video of the incident, describing how his son was punched simply for pointing out the forgotten turn signal in Pattaya.

The victim, identified as Mr. A (alias), 15 years old, explained that he was riding as a passenger with a friend when they encountered the other party on Pattaya Sai Sam Road. His friend, who was driving, politely told the other motorcyclist, "Brother, you forgot to turn off your turn signal."

Shortly after, the other party caught up, told them to pull over, and an argument ensued. Another friend of the perpetrator then arrived and, without understanding the situation, began punching the victim and his friend until their motorcycle fell over.

After the assault, the perpetrators fled on their motorcycles. The victim then filed a police report for assistance.

Police have documented the incident as evidence and coordinated with the investigation unit to track down the perpetrators for legal prosecution.

Afghan Girl Learns of Sponsor's Death After Rescue
6 Aug Khaosod

A sad turn of events unfolded as Nasatala, a rural Afghan girl, learned of the death of Hulun Solo, the Thai content creator who had promised to help her pursue a medical degree. Thai physician Dr. Thaniey Thaniyawan (Doctor Tany page) had announced plans to sponsor Nasatala's medical education after Hulun discovered her exceptional aptitude and dream of becoming a doctor during travels to Afghanistan. Thai nationals and UN colleagues in the country assisted in locating the girl, coordinating the search through the "Little Girl on the Cold Mountain" page.

When UN official Sharif finally located Nasatala, she was still recovering from a recent accident with visible bruising on her face. The timing was particularly heartbreaking—she learned of Hulun's death on the same day. In response, Nasatala and her family offered prayers for Hulun to rest in God's embrace. The search team successfully connected Nasatala with Dr. Thaniyawan, and officials reported she was delighted to hear of the sponsorship opportunity, given her family's financial hardship. The coordinated effort by Thai volunteers and UN staff demonstrated solidarity in fulfilling Hulun's original promise to support the girl's medical aspirations.

Rescue Teams Recover Body of Legendary Climber Nirmal Purja
6 Aug Khaosod

Pakistani search teams backed by military helicopters recovered the body of renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja and three other missing climbers on Wednesday, bringing the total number of bodies recovered from Broad Peak to seven nearly a week after an avalanche killed a 10-member international climbing expedition on July 30. The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that the recovery operation was one of the most technically challenging rescue missions ever conducted on Broad Peak, with the bodies of Purja, Chinese climber Zong Wang, and Nepali climbers Nima Sherpa and Kilu Sherpa successfully transported to base camp. Three other bodies had been recovered and brought down on August 1.

Local officials said the bodies will be transported to a military hospital in Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, once weather conditions improve. Meanwhile, in Kathmandu, family members, friends, and supporters of the climbers held candlelight vigils and memorial ceremonies.

Mountaineering accidents are relatively common in Pakistan due to frequent avalanches, ice falls, and rockslides, combined with rapidly changing weather at high altitudes. In 2025, a Chinese climber died when struck by rockfall while descending K2, the world's second-highest mountain. Typically, the bodies of foreign mountaineers who die on Pakistani peaks are only recovered if requested by families and governments; if families refuse, bodies are often left at the site of death.
