A test drive was arranged with Reve Automotive to evaluate the BYD Sealion 5 DM-i, a plug-in hybrid combining an 18.3 kWh electric motor as the primary drivetrain with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. At low speeds, the engine charges the battery or powers the motor directly; at higher speeds and during overtaking, the engine assists the electric drive. The vehicle features simple exterior styling with LED lighting, 18-inch alloys, power tailgate, puddle lights, a 12.8-inch touchscreen with full connectivity, 8.8-inch information display, multi-function steering wheel, and wireless phone charging.
With a spacious SUV design offering good visibility in heavy Bangkok traffic, the vehicle's safety systems—including blind-spot warnings and automatic traffic jam alerts—enhance confidence during lane changes. In economy mode, the electric motor responds sharply and the regenerative braking system helps efficiency. According to specifications, the vehicle achieves 1,200 km total range: 110 km on full battery charge and the remainder on fuel.
After 28 km of city driving, consumption showed 1% battery consumed per 1.2 km. On Rama II Road and the M82 expressway, the vehicle maintained smooth acceleration without strain, cruising at 120 km/h with a feel of 80–90 km/h. The engine engaged after the battery depleted at 103 km of electric driving. For commuters living within 50 km of work, daily fuel consumption could be minimal. The test continued toward Nakhon Si Thammarat to measure complete real-world range.
