Car Rental Owner Drowning in Debt Spiral After Illegal Loan
A Songkhla car rental owner who borrowed 780,500 baht from an illegal moneylender has already repaid 2.8 million baht in interest alone but faces relentless daily collection demands of 20,000 baht in Had Yai district.
A car rental shop owner in Songkhla province has complained to police after falling into a debt trap with an illegal moneylender in Had Yai district. The 54-year-old business owner initially borrowed 50,000 baht in February 2024, receiving only 45,000 baht after deductions, and was required to repay 27,500 baht within 24 days. Over six months, she borrowed a total of 28 times, accumulating a principal of 780,500 baht but has since paid the lender 2.8 million baht—more than 2 million baht in pure interest and profit. Despite this massive repayment, the moneylender continues daily collection attempts, now demanding 20,000 baht per day, forcing the owner to seek additional loans from other sources to keep up. The owner has filed a report with Had Yai Police and the Had Yai Justice Center, requesting mediation and an end to the harassment. She revealed that the debt crisis pushed her to consider taking her own life. Deputy Investigation Chief Chanawit Rattanawin of Had Yai Station acknowledged receiving her complaint and began formal documentation. The victim appealed for police assistance in negotiating with the lender, as she has already repaid far more than borrowed and can no longer sustain the daily payment demands alongside other debts totaling around 30,000 baht per day.
