Chiang Mai Cultural Council Marks 30 Years Preserving Lanna Heritage

On September 29, the Chiang Mai Cultural Council held a 30-year commemoration at the Kad Luang International Convention Centre, celebrating its founding as Thailand's first cultural council. Attendees registered to view exhibitions and participate in demonstrations of Lanna wisdom, cultural products, and a special exhibition titled "25 Districts, One Lanna Identity" showcasing the cultural diversity of all 25 districts in Chiang Mai Province. Deputy Governor Siva Thamikanont attended the opening ceremony and witnessed the cultural procession "Homhak Saphawatthanam 25 Amphoe" featuring representatives from district cultural councils, local artists, youth, and cultural networks. Surapol Kiatchaiyakorn, chairman of the Chiang Mai Cultural Council, presented a formal opening report followed by three ceremonial drum beats and a performance titled "Bupphalanna: Preserving Chiang Mai Culture for the Global Stage." The program included a tribute video to founder Chao Duang Duen and presentations honoring cultural contributors, community scholars, local wisdom teachers, and youth cultural networks with plaques, certificates, and commemorative pins. Afternoon activities continued until 4:30 p.m. with a Lanna night market, seminars on "The Cultural Council in a New Decade," and performances exploring how new generations can innovate Lanna culture while maintaining its roots. Dr. Yok Kachaporn Weroj, vice chairman and longtime supporter of the council, received an honor plaque and medal for outstanding cultural contributions as an individual from the Thailand Cultural Council in partnership with the Ministry of Culture's Department of Cultural Promotion. Nong Yad (Nadthip Tephhasdin Na Ayutthaya) also received a commemorative medal at the event.
