Doctors are warning stage 4 chronic kidney disease patients about four serious risks associated with eating shaved ice to cool off in hot weather, which can lead to severe dehydration and acute kidney injury. A case involving a 65-year-old male patient with stage 4 chronic kidney disease, whose kidney function was only 20%, illustrates the danger: after consuming a bowl of shaved ice topped with red beans, peanuts, and taro balls drizzled with syrup while shopping at a market, he experienced unusual sourness, then severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea that same night. His body became severely dehydrated, causing low blood pressure that reduced blood flow to his kidneys and triggered acute kidney injury, requiring emergency dialysis to save his life.

Dr. Hongs Yang-siang, a kidney disease specialist, explained that while healthy people with diarrhea from shaved ice typically recover within days, stage 4 kidney disease patients face much greater risks and should be cautious about four key concerns:

1. Bacterial infection: Hygiene standards vary widely among shaved ice vendors, and ice and equipment can harbor bacteria. If a kidney patient develops severe acute gastroenteritis with heavy diarrhea, the body rapidly loses fluids, reducing blood flow to the kidneys and causing rapid kidney function decline.

2. High potassium: Toppings such as red beans, mung beans, peanuts, and taro contain high potassium levels. If failing kidneys cannot efficiently excrete excess potassium, it accumulates and increases the risk of irregular heartbeat or even cardiac arrest.

3. High fructose and phosphorus: Dark brown sugar syrup, sweetened condensed milk, and thick fruit jams contain high levels of fructose and phosphorus. Excessive fructose harms kidney function, while excess phosphorus that cannot be excreted damages blood vessels and bones.

4. Pulmonary edema: Ice melts into water in the body, and for stage 4 kidney patients who must restrict fluid intake—especially those with heart disease—one bowl of shaved ice can add hundreds of milliliters of extra water, straining the heart and lungs and increasing the risk of fluid overload or pulmonary edema.

Dr. Hongs recommends that kidney patients seeking refreshment in hot weather suck on small ice cubes made from filtered and boiled water, which provides a cooling sensation while controlling water intake. If eating shaved ice outside the home, avoid toppings made from beans and legumes.

On August 9, 2025, opposition party coordinators led by Pheu Thai list-system MP Prisut Vatchrasindu held a detailed evidence review of the senate fraud case at Parliament, examining financial trails and political connections. Within Bang Noi Floating Market at house number 90, Moo 8, stands the Tangsiam Ha Museum (Ban Hai Pan Bai), housing a vast collection of ancient artifacts. Museum owner Thawatchai Pisetkosalai, 69, explained that approximately 4,000 artifacts are displayed, with roughly 80 percent salvaged from the Mae Klong River. Most pieces are ancient household pottery such as water jars, palm sugar pots, lime containers, cooking vessels, and garlic mortars, ranging from 100 to 1,000 years old and spanning the Dvaravati, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, and early Rattanakosin periods.

These artifacts sank because in ancient times there were no dams. When floods occurred or boats capsized during trade, goods fell to the riverbed and were naturally preserved underground. Thawatchai recounted that his collection began in 1983 when he witnessed divers selling Mae Klong artifacts to Bangkok merchants near Wat Koh Kaeo. Moved by the loss of national heritage, he gradually purchased and accumulated items over 20 years before opening the museum in 2001, before Bang Noi Floating Market was established, to educate future generations.

The Office for National Education Standards and Quality Assessment (ONESQA) is advancing efforts to reduce educational inequality and address the crisis of children dropping out of school by shifting from traditional assessment toward "assessment for development" and piloting the Smart Local Literacy (SLC) model, which brings community-based learning innovations to promote literacy among ethnic minority children and those in remote areas.

ONESQA Director Prof. Dr. Ongard Naipadbhan stated that raising education quality and standards across all dimensions requires narrowing educational gaps, particularly addressing illiteracy, which serves as a fundamental foundation for continued learning. Illiteracy is also a significant factor that discourages children from continuing school and drives them out of the education system.

ONESQA is accelerating implementation of participation strategies and collaborative networks to build "intellectual capital" systematically by partnering with domestic and international networks, working directly with local communities, and using external assessment results to organize concrete educational promotion activities. The agency plans to apply policy recommendations to improve education quality nationwide.

Prof. Dr. Ongard noted that ONESQA's quality assessments have found that small schools in remote areas, particularly those serving ethnic minority children, face significant literacy challenges. ONESQA has therefore developed partnerships with higher education institutions possessing unique strengths, such as Rajabhat Universities distributed nationwide, which have deep understanding of local contexts and social geography.

"ONESQA is leveraging universities' potential through the Smart Local Literacy (SLC) model, or community-rooted learning, by transforming university knowledge into learning innovations suited to local contexts," Prof. Dr. Ongard explained. "This allows students in remote areas to learn reading and writing through teaching materials connected to local lifestyles and identities, making learning easier to understand, faster to absorb, and more enjoyable."

The Smart Local Literacy model emerged from ONESQA's shift from evaluative assessment to assessment for development, drawing lessons from a network of 13 schools under the Thaesao–Wangkrajeae Educational Network in Kanchanaburi Primary Educational Service Area 3. The innovation was developed to support Thai language learning for grades 1–6 at Buddhavimutti School in Thai Mueang District, serving as a prototype for network schools to build upon, with guidance from Kanchanaburi Rajabhat University.

"ONESQA plans to compile and summarize results to propose policy recommendations to the Ministry of Education for expanding local media innovations in partnership with educational networks nationwide," Prof. Dr. Ongard concluded. "This will ensure literacy and reading become key drivers for education development, reduce the number of children and youth outside the education system, and build sustainable human capital."

On August 9, 2024, Highway Police Region 4, Group 6 jointly with the Ubon Ratchathani Department of Highways arrested Somsak (surname withheld), age 40, on charges of theft of public property used for lighting along highways, nighttime offenses involving a vehicle, and possession of methamphetamine.
