Climate and Land Policy Agencies Launch Five-Year Partnership
Thailand's climate and land agencies signed a five-year partnership to integrate land management with climate action on farmland, supporting carbon sequestration and livelihood security while meeting the nation's 2035 emission reduction tar
The National Land Policy Committee Office and the Department of Climate Change and Environment signed a memorandum of understanding on September 16 to drive climate action across government-designated farmland areas. The five-year collaboration will integrate land management with climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. Dr. Chayan Pakdijit, director of the National Land Policy Committee, said the initiative supports fair land distribution and livelihood security while reducing natural resource encroachment and building carbon sequestration capacity. Dr. Pirun Saiyasitphanit, director of the Department of Climate Change and Environment, noted that Thailand aims to absorb 118 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in forestry and land use by 2035, requiring integrated data and planning support. The partnership will include knowledge development, capacity building for provincial staff and stakeholders, and identification of pilot areas using climate risk mapping for heavy rainfall, rising temperatures, landslides, and sea-level rise.
