Employers Seek Lower Social Security Fees for Welfare-Focused Firms
Employers at Thailand's Social Security Board election are pushing for lower contribution rates for companies that provide good employee welfare, especially health benefits. They also demand transparent and efficient management of the fund, citing past wasteful spending and urging voters to participate. The proposals come as the contribution ceiling has risen and employers seek a more neutral, preventive-focused system.
Employer representatives voiced their views at the Social Security Board election, urging lower contributions for companies with good employee welfare and calling for transparent fund management. Ms. Kanokrada said she arrived at the polling station at 07:00 to check her rights and observe the process, noting that although travel was convenient, the sudden postponement of the election created obstacles. She added that some partners who had scouted the venue in advance could not vote on the day because of overseas trips, and that confusion in the advance registration system prevented some insured persons from registering. Amid an increase in the social security contribution ceiling, employers expect the fund to become more neutral and propose that companies providing good physical and mental health care for employees should receive reduced contribution rates or discounts, similar to the Workers' Compensation Fund. They argue that the current system focuses on reactive care such as resignation, termination or hospital treatment, lacking broader preventive health measures that companies already offer, and that incentivizing prevention through lower contributions would be beneficial. Ms. Kanokrada also called on the elected board to manage contributions from both employers and employees efficiently, with clear plans, projects and measurable outcomes, criticising past spending on items like yearly calendars that lacked value. She urged all eligible voters to turn out, stressing that the monthly contributions are a legitimate right and that voting is an important chance to choose representatives who will manage everyone's money for maximum benefit.
