Floods Submerge Rice and Cassava Fields in Buriram
Continuous heavy rain has flooded rice and cassava fields in Buriram’s Nang Rong district for about a week, causing crops to begin rotting. Farmers report standing water remains in many areas despite receding levels, prompting urgent damage assessments and pleas for government assistance.
Buriram – Ongoing heavy rain has left rice and cassava fields in Nang Rong district submerged for about a week, with plants starting to rot and farmers fearing total loss. Seventy‑four‑year‑old Boon Suksoongneun of Ban Don Khun Phrom, Moo 10, Tambon Nong Sai, said he farms roughly 30 rai of rice that was inundated for a week; water has receded but pools remain, and initial inspections by officials have been carried out. He urged the government to provide assistance and compensation, noting that many farmers have already invested heavily and would suffer severely if the crop is destroyed.
Sixty‑five‑year‑old Wanchai Khonplapan of Ban Don Khwang, Moo 20, Tambon Nong Sai, added that he cultivates about 26 rai of rice and seven rai of cassava, both affected by the flood. The cassava has been underwater for nearly a week, showing signs of decay and risk of dying outright, while rice may suffer if water does not drain completely, potentially stunting growth and reducing harvest yields. Even areas that escaped inundation worry about stunted development.
Wanchai said that although water levels are dropping, standing water persists in many fields, leaving farmers uncertain about how much of their investment will survive. He called on authorities and relevant agencies to conduct thorough damage surveys and formulate relief measures to alleviate their hardship.
