The government is cracking down hard on illegal business networks and nominee schemes, according to Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Pheriswiwattana speaking on August 9. Interior Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary General Piersuwannachai led a special task force from the Department of Local Administration and partner agencies in launching Operation Integrated Huai Khwang to inspect hotels and businesses in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district following public complaints. The investigation will examine shareholding structures, financial trails, land ownership, and allegations of state officials demanding benefits.
The integrated operation involves the Department of Local Administration, Immigration Bureau, Department of Business Development, Department of Employment, and Special Cases Investigation Department (DSI). Preliminary checks found some establishments operating without proper licenses, unauthorized building modifications, and evidence of Thai nationals being used as nominee shareholders for foreign investors. Inspectors also identified safety concerns including faulty fire escapes, emergency exits, and fire suppression systems. Labor inspections uncovered illegal foreign workers and workers in jobs reserved by law for Thai nationals.
Lalida emphasized that the government takes seriously allegations of state officials accepting bribes. During the operation, business owners attempted to offer benefits to officials in exchange for not facing prosecution and named officials from certain agencies. Evidence has been collected and will be investigated for disciplinary and criminal action. The Interior Ministry will also coordinate with the Land Department to check property ownership, trace financial flows linked to online gambling QR codes, and examine payments processed outside Thailand's banking system.
The operation is not limited to Huai Khwang or Bangkok, Lalida said, with the Interior Ministry preparing to expand inspections nationwide using three approaches: gathering intelligence from the public and local representatives, monitoring online platforms linked to illegal businesses, and tracing financial trails to identify true beneficiaries. The government confirmed that enforcement will target all parties involved regardless of whether they are foreign investors, nominee shareholders, legal or accounting service providers, or state officials, applying the full force of the law to prevent illegal businesses from exploiting legitimate Thai entrepreneurs.
