Hudson: Asian Cup Delay Boosts Thailand's King's Cup Preparation
Thailand coach Anthony Hudson says the AFC's decision to postpone the 2027 Asian Cup to late 2025 will give the War Elephants better preparation time. He has named a 23-man squad for the 52nd King's Cup in Sri Sa Ket this November and is confident the team can win the tournament. Hudson also thanked the Football Association and clubs for their cooperation in releasing players amid a congested schedule.
Thailand head coach Anthony Hudson has announced a 23-man squad for the 52nd King's Cup, set for November 14-17 at Sri Sa Ket's provincial stadium, ahead of the rescheduled 2027 AFC Asian Cup finals in Saudi Arabia. The Asian Football Confederation moved the tournament from early next year to late 2025 for safety reasons, a change Hudson believes gives his side more time to prepare.
"We're thrilled to go to Sri Sa Ket because it's vital for us as a national team to play matches around the country," Hudson said. "I've heard incredible things about the fans there, and the players can't wait to perform in front of them. I'm very satisfied with the squad we've selected. Despite scheduling challenges and other issues, I have no complaints and truly believe this group can make us proud."
Addressing inevitable selection criticism, Hudson acknowledged the difficulty of balancing club and country demands, especially with congested calendars involving the ASEAN Club Championship and AFC Champions League. He thanked Football Association president Nualphan Lamsam and club executives — notably those of Supachok Sarachat, Suphanat Mueanta, and Supanat Chalermchaichote — for their cooperation in releasing players. "Some clubs have been outstanding in their support, and I'm deeply grateful for that collaboration," he added.
