A Myanmar teenager who drove a pickup truck into a nurse assistant, killing her, has been remanded in custody. The driver remained silent and showed no remorse. Police have filed three serious charges and opposed bail, while dozens of the suspect's friends and girlfriend gathered at the station to support him.
The incident stemmed from a clash between groups of teenagers, including Myanmar nationals, who had arranged to meet and fight. A pickup truck driven by one of the Myanmar youths struck the nurse assistant. The driver later surrendered to police along with the vehicle. Authorities seized seven vehicles — pickup trucks and sedans — belonging to the youth gang and questioned 20 teenagers involved, charging them and forwarding the case to court.
At 11:00 a.m. on November 3, 2026, police reported that Mae Ping Police Station officers took the driver, identified as Mr. Mueang, a Myanmar national, to Chiang Mai Provincial Court for detention after further questioning and preparation of the prosecution file. Police also filed a motion opposing bail. Meanwhile, the suspect's girlfriend and dozens of fellow gang members packed the holding area to offer moral support, even though he had just killed someone with his vehicle. The suspect kept his mouth shut, showing no sign of shock or regret. When asked if he regretted his actions, he did not respond.
Police initially charged the pickup driver with three offenses: reckless driving causing death, hit-and-run, and theft (or gang-related offense). Regarding the brawl between the two gangs, police have charged 20 individuals with gang-related offenses and plan to investigate the other party further. Seven cars and five motorcycles damaged in the crash have been impounded as evidence.
The operation was led by Pol. Lt. Col. Chindech Deet, Deputy Superintendent of Chiang Mai Provincial Police, along with Pol. Lt. Col. Yanapon Phattanchai, Superintendent of Mae Ping Police Station, Pol. Capt. Khatawut Hongnu, Deputy Inspector of Investigation, and Pol. Lt. Chayanon Chusuvan, investigator. They conducted inspections and crackdowns on youth gatherings in the area under Don Jan Bridge, Tha Sala Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai Province. Authorities are implementing strict measures to increase surveillance, prevent crime and disturbances, and enhance public safety in the area.
Pol. Lt. Col. Yanapon Phattanchai, Superintendent of Mae Ping Police Station, stated that the station is committed to proactive policing, monitoring high-risk areas, preventing crime and unrest, and continuously building public confidence and peace of mind.
