The online drama surrounding an argument between Italian students and a passenger on Bangkok's BTS Skytrain has come to a close. The Italian students and their supervisor met with the victim at Samsen Police Station to apologize sincerely, acknowledge their inappropriate behavior, and reach a settlement. Police are proceeding with fines under the law, while the victim and her family have forgiven them and appealed to the public to stop harassing the student group.
The incident occurred on July 25 when a video of the altercation went viral on social media. The victim filed a complaint against five Italian youth and one supervisor. During mediation that lasted over an hour, the students expressed genuine remorse, acknowledged their misconduct, and agreed to delete all images and videos from their phones and social media.
The supervisor stated the students respect Thai culture and traditions and will learn from this incident. The victim, Ms. Sugas, said she recognized their sincerity and believed those who admit fault deserve a second chance. She noted her complaint aimed to protect her rights and dignity while reminding visitors to respect Thai values and etiquette.
Police charged four students with "insult in the presence of others" with 1,000 baht fines each. One student who displayed an obscene gesture was additionally charged with "conduct bringing dishonor to a government official" and fined 2,000 baht. The case has been formally settled with both parties reaching agreement.
