At 1:30 p.m. on July 13, 2024, police from Panasnikhom Station and rescue units from Baan Thung Hiang received reports of a fatal accident on Khlong Muang Road in tambon Tha Boonmee, Ko Samui district, Chachoengsao province. Officers found a blue 10-wheel Isuzu truck (license plate 70-3282, Lopburi) overturned on its driver's side with chicken crates still loaded in the bed. The driver was trapped beneath the vehicle. Rescue teams coordinated with a private excavator and crane to lift the truck while volunteers unloaded chicken crates to reduce weight on the victim. After approximately one hour of operations, rescue workers reached the victim, who was unconscious at the truck's rear. Medical examination revealed the driver had been crushed by the rear wheel and was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was later identified as Sommaai, age 47. A nearby shop owner reported that the truck had been parked near a waste bin about 100 meters away. The driver had stepped into the shop to make a purchase, but within seconds the truck rolled downhill on a curved section of road. The driver rushed out trying to catch the truck and stop it, but the vehicle lost control, overturned, and crushed him severely. Udorn Pasangchob, 64, a volunteer rescue worker from Baan Thung Hiang, stated that when they arrived, they found the truck had been parked on the roadside before rolling downhill. The driver attempted to run after it to stop it, but the unexpected incident occurred and the truck veered, overturned, and fatally crushed the driver. Police documented the scene, collected evidence, and forwarded the body for autopsy while conducting a full investigation into the accident.

Nakhon Ratchasima Police Inspect Major Nightclub After Bangkok Fire Deaths
2d ago Khaosod

On July 13, 2025 at 2:30 p.m., authorities including Regional Police Commander Pol. Maj. Gen. Nongsakdi Promthada, District Officer Chinakorn Kaenkong, and Pho Thong Police Chief Pol. Col. Patcharadanai Karinthorn conducted comprehensive safety checks at Mitrapap Beer Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima following a massive fire in Bangkok that claimed 27 lives and injured 71 others. Inspectors examined fire escape routes, emergency lighting systems, exit signage, and internal layout to assess whether large crowds could be evacuated quickly and safely during fire or emergency situations. The Royal Thai Police headquarters ordered all Regional Police offices and local authorities nationwide to expedite safety inspections at all major entertainment venues following the Bangkok incident.

Officers provided recommendations to the venue operator on safety improvements, including fire prevention measures and emergency response procedures. The inspection focused on fire exits being adequately wide and clear to prevent overcrowding and panic, backup electrical systems with emergency lighting covering critical areas and escape routes, and clearly visible EXIT signs. Nakhon Ratchasima has numerous other major venues with large patron populations that will be inspected in coming weeks, with assessment of fire systems, electrical safety, structural integrity of stages and components, and table and space arrangement to facilitate evacuation.

Authorities emphasized that fire exits must be unobstructed and wide enough for rapid evacuation to prevent crowding and panic. Backup electrical systems are required in case of circuit failure, with emergency lighting covering important areas, hallways, and escape routes. EXIT signs must be clear and easily visible. The inspection will focus on accident risk, physical structure, and fire hazard prevention to close safety gaps and prevent similar incidents. After structural and equipment inspections, officials will require drills of emergency response and evacuation plans involving venue staff and relevant government agencies to test staff readiness and system effectiveness. Authorities will also verify age restrictions preventing anyone under 20 from entry and check for violations of legal operating hours and other regulatory requirements.

Bangkok Revives Stalled Mega-Project to Generate 1.25 Billion Baht

Bangkok Revives Stalled Mega-Project to Generate 1.25 Billion Baht
2d ago Khaosod

The State Property Fund has revived the Mochit Complex project, a major mixed-use development on prime Bangkok land that has stalled for over three decades, aiming to generate 1.25 billion baht in state revenue.

Akkrut Santhayanan, director-general of the State Property Fund, revealed positive momentum on the Mochit Complex project—a real estate development at the former bus terminal site—after a 32-year delay since 1992. Bangkok Terminal Company (BKT), the original concession holder, is now moving forward under the existing contract without renegotiating. The project concept design is expected to be finalized soon.

"My goal is to push this project forward within the next year before my retirement, achieving clear and tangible results," he stated.

If the project succeeds, it is projected to generate approximately 1.25 billion baht in revenue for the Ministry of Finance through two main streams: an upfront fee of around 400 million baht, and recovery payments from funds previously advanced to the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) to lay foundational infrastructure for future real estate development.

The development framework remains unchanged: the project will utilize approximately 700,000 square meters, allowing the private developer to construct hotels, shopping malls, or residential units as appropriate, with the requirement to reserve 1,000 square meters for a bus terminal.

Recently, plans for an elevated link connecting Vibhavadi Rangsit Road and Don Muang tollway have been canceled, eliminating the need for additional land acquisition and allowing normal road access to be restored.

The concession period follows cabinet resolution, setting a 50-year term divided into 30+10+10 years. However, the timeline does not begin until construction is completed.

Lawmaker Demands 120 Billion Baht Budget Cut Over Redundancy

A lawmaker demands parliament cut a proposed 120 billion baht budget allocation, arguing its energy and crisis-recovery objectives duplicate a 200 billion baht emergency borrowing decree already approved by the Constitutional Court.

Lawmaker Demands 120 Billion Baht Budget Cut Over Redundancy
2d ago Khaosod

On July 13, Watanya Bunnak of the special budget committee told media about her concerns raised at a July 3 meeting regarding central budget allocations with objectives duplicating a 200 billion baht emergency borrowing decree. The government justified both measures as part of energy infrastructure transition and economic crisis recovery related to energy price impacts. Under committee review, the 120 billion baht central budget allocation was found to have identical objectives—addressing energy-related economic damage and shifting from fossil fuels to green energy—as the borrowing decree approved by the Constitutional Court on July 9.

Watanya stated the committee should cut or reduce the 120 billion baht allocation because its objectives mirror the borrowing decree "word for word." She expressed concern that allowing such redundant budgets through parliament would let the executive branch redirect funds without strict parliamentary checks, functioning essentially as a blank check of 120 billion baht. She advocated instead for using those funds on more urgent and necessary projects.

Watanya also noted that while the 200 billion baht borrowing decree includes a committee chaired by the finance permanent secretary to screen projects and would require periodic parliamentary reporting, the central budget reserve—if approved—could be repurposed at executive discretion without intense parliamentary oversight. Budget officials explained the reserve would work differently, channeling funds to agencies with off-budget revenues that must contribute their own matching funds. However, Watanya argued this distinction made no practical difference and that the funds should simply go to the borrowing decree instead. She confirmed that multiple other budget items also showed overlapping or redundant objectives across government agencies.

A fan has shared video footage from inside the Ladprao beer bar just minutes before a major fire broke out, showing the atmosphere still filled with joy before tragedy struck. Chakrachai Phoksamat, the girlfriend of young singer Tik Chanaachai, shared a clip from the Madam Mam page showing the atmosphere inside the bar as the young singer performed on stage to entertain customers.

She captioned it: "This clip was recorded only minutes before the tragic fire at the Ladprao beer bar. At that moment, everything still looked normal. People were chatting, listening to music, laughing, and enjoying their time together happily. No one knew that just moments later, an unexpected event would turn this fun night into a tragedy with many casualties and injuries."

The video shows Tik performing on stage before the fire broke out, and he narrowly escaped. His girlfriend noted in her caption: "The person on stage is Tik, he was singing. Minutes later, the fire broke out very badly." Commenters noted they could recognize the singer's shirt. Tik was among those who barely made it out alive—he had just left the stage to go to the bathroom when the fire started, allowing him to escape in time.

A blocked women's restroom exit and a dangerously narrow emergency passage hampered evacuations from a Bangkok beer bar fire that killed 27 people on July 13, police revealed. Investigators are examining whether poor safety design and struc

Police: Fire Exit Blocked, Narrow Passage Slowed Evacuation
2d ago Khaosod

On July 13, 2025, National Police Commissioner General Kittarat Pandhepetch visited the Ladprao beer bar fire scene, revealing 27 deaths currently held at the Police Hospital's Institute of Forensic Medicine awaiting identification. Relatives can report information at the MET Center, Phahol Police Station, or the National Police Operations Center. Some injured have returned home, and investigators are coordinating with hospitals to interview survivors. The bar owner remains hospitalized in ICU. The commissioner disclosed that the single-story venue had two front exits and two rear exits. The women's restroom exit was blocked by a toffee display table, while another exit marked "Emergency Exit" leading from the bar area through the kitchen had a missing door handle and a sliding door narrowed by shelving and lockers, permitting only one person at a time to pass. Investigators are examining whether poor evacuation design or rapid fire spread resulted from structural alterations or blocked exits. Heavy decorations above the stage and potential flammable materials used in renovations are also under investigation. The working theory focuses on negligence. Police have tasked the Forensic Police Division to inspect electrical wiring, circuit breakers, and safety systems in the 53-year-old building, and to verify all construction permits and modifications under previous operators. Rescue and fire personnel who responded will be interviewed to confirm reports of locked doors during the incident.

Toxic Gases Released in Bangkok Beer Hall Fire Kill 27
2d ago Khaosod

The Department of Health has warned that polyurethane and PVC materials ignited during a fire at a beer hall in Ladprao, Chatuchak district, Bangkok on July 13, killing 27 people (9 men, 18 women) and injuring 72, affecting 99 people total. Dr. Ampon Banjopunthapit, director of the Department of Health, stated that the department is concerned about public health in affected areas and has tasked environmental health teams and municipal health institutes to assess environmental health impacts, measure air quality, and provide health guidance and N95 masks to at-risk residents.

Dr. Naresritthi Khatthasima, deputy director of the Department of Health, explained that the fire occurred in a building containing decorative or sound-dampening materials such as polyurethane (PU) or plastics like PVC, which when burned generate fine particles and toxic gases including carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and hydrogen chloride (HCl). These gases may harm the respiratory system and health, particularly for those near the site, including vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic diseases. Field surveys showed that residents within 100 meters experienced smoke smell during the fire but no smoke was detected after morning the next day.

Dr. Naresritthi recommended that nearby residents avoid outdoor areas and exposure to smoke; if they must go outside, they should wear protective masks. Residents should keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entry, and wipe down floors, walls, and surfaces with damp cloths if soot remains indoors. They should wash hands before eating or touching their face. Anyone experiencing unusual symptoms such as eye irritation, cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, dizziness, nausea, or loss of consciousness should seek medical care immediately, especially vulnerable groups and those with pre-existing conditions. The Department of Health's SEhRT team will continue monitoring air quality and environmental health risks while providing ongoing public guidance.

YLG Urges Gold Investment as Baht Weakens

YLG expects the weakening baht to support Thai gold prices in the second half of 2024, recommending dollar-denominated gold to capture both foreign exchange gains and potential price recovery as global gold remains pressured.

YLG Urges Gold Investment as Baht Weakens
2d ago Khaosod

YLG forecasts continued baht weakness in the second half of 2024 due to lingering U.S. Federal Reserve rate uncertainty and high global oil prices, which should keep Thai gold prices buoyed despite weakness in global gold markets. YLG CEO Pawun Vavattanasopit noted that global gold (Gold Spot) has fallen 5.12% year-to-date, from $4,318.27 per troy ounce at the start of 2024 to $4,098.15 on July 10, while domestic gold in baht has risen 0.54% from 64,450 baht per gram to approximately 64,750 baht, thanks to baht depreciation offsetting global gold weakness.

In the second half of the year, the baht is expected to remain weak despite typical year-end tourism season strength, as Fed rate uncertainty and high oil prices supporting dollar demand outweigh seasonal factors. YLG recommends investors in dollar-denominated gold benefit from two sources of profit: foreign exchange gains as dollar assets appreciate in baht terms, and potential capital appreciation if global gold prices recover. Investors holding baht-denominated gold alone would miss out on the significant foreign exchange gains available to those holding gold in U.S. dollars.
