Landslide Closes Highway 1148 in Phayao After Heavy Rain
Heavy rainfall triggered a landslide that blocked Highway 1148 in Phayao's Pong District early Monday, with authorities working to clear soil and mud from the road as rain continues.
Heavy rain fell throughout the night in Phayao Province, triggering a landslide that blocked Highway 1148 toward Pha Chang Noi early this morning. The slide has cut off all vehicle traffic on the route through Pong District.
Investigators found the incident occurred in a road construction and improvement zone. Soil saturated by continuous rainfall destabilized and flowed down onto the roadway over a wide area, along with mud and runoff from the steep terrain, temporarily severing the route. Large volumes of wet soil remain on the roadside, and some power poles along the road have tilted under the weight of the soil mass. Officials have increased precautions to prevent accidents during clearing operations.
Authorities and relevant agencies have inspected the site and are deploying machinery to excavate and move the soil and mud covering the road surface, aiming to reopen the route as quickly as possible for public use.
However, with rain still falling in the area and the terrain remaining steep, travelers needing to use Highway 1148 toward Pha Chang Noi are advised to exercise caution and follow official updates closely, especially while clearing operations are underway.
