The lukthung music community grieves the passing of celebrated composer Doi Inthanon, whose full name was Somboon Somphan. A master songwriter and senior composer, Inthanon was a pivotal behind-the-scenes figure in lukthung history, particularly known for weaving Isan dialect, local life stories, and Northeast cultural flavors into the genre. He died peacefully at age 79 following complications from heart disease and pulmonary edema, which flared up after his treatment included two heart balloon procedures—one the previous year and another last month.
Inthanon, a native of Surin Province with deep Isan cultural roots, developed his craft from an early passion for verse composition. His distinctive style merged Isan language and cultural essence with both central and northeastern lukthung music. He created songs for numerous celebrated singers across generations, including hits like "Petchrajah" performed by Rung Phet Lamsing, "Won Phrom" by Yodrak Sakjai, and "Fon Ma Nam Ta Som" and "Bad Thayak Jai" by Sunaree Ratchasima. He famously gave the stage name to singer Siriporn Ampaipong and championed younger artists throughout his career.
His contributions were formally recognized when Khon Kaen University honored him as "Isan Cultural Artist 2014, Lukthung Composition Category," and he later received the Outstanding Artist Award from the Thai Songwriters Association in January 2017. Even in his later years, Inthanon remained active—in 2023 he collaborated with composers Dao Ban Don and Paitoon Khanthong to create new songs for lukthung singers, waiving royalties to raise funds for the Thai Lukthung Singers Association. A Buddhist funeral service began September 28, 2025, at Wat Saphan in Bangkok's Khlong Toei district, with the main cremation ceremony scheduled for October 3, 2025.
