Bass Legend Thong Wongthoo Mourned by Peers
Renowned 1990s singer Sua Thanapol has mourned the passing of Thong Wongthoo, a highly skilled bass player and multi-talented music producer who died on September 28 at age 56 from nasal cavity cancer. Sua praised Thong's exceptional musicianship and versatile contributions to the Thai music industry. Artist colleagues are planning a benefit concert to support Thong's family.
Former 1990s music star Sua Thanapol has paid tribute to Thong Wongthoo, a highly skilled bass player and multitalented musician, wishing him eternal peace. A funeral chanting ceremony was held on September 29 at Wat Phra Sri Mahathat Voramahaviharn in Bangkok's Bangkhen district for Thong Wongthoo, born Suraphan Jamlongkul, a renowned duo singer from the 1990s who died peacefully on September 28, 2025, at age 56 from nasal cavity cancer.
In an interview before the funeral ceremony, Sua Thanapol, who frequently collaborated with Thong Wongthoo, praised his late colleague: "I can't say exactly how long we've known each other, but we started working together in the RS era. We had many opportunities to collaborate. Thong played bass on numerous songs of mine. He was a beloved younger brother and extremely talented. You could joke and chat with him and he would never get angry.
Beyond being a musician, Thong was also a producer and composer who oversaw music production in many capacities. During our time working together, there was nothing in music that Thong couldn't do. He developed from being a musician to an arranger, then a producer, and eventually handled production matters. His bass skills were exceptional—anyone who knew him understood how well he played. We hadn't seen each other in a long time and hadn't kept in touch.
I only recently learned about Thong's condition when he shared a blood donation appeal. I was shocked because I'd heard he wasn't well, but I didn't realize how serious it was until I learned through the blood donation request.
When we heard about the blood donation appeal, we discussed organizing a benefit concert to raise funds for Thong's family. We began preparing from that point, and many artists have already committed. It's a coming together of artist colleagues to help one another. I believe the concert will still happen, but we're waiting for updates on when and where. We're currently awaiting confirmations from more artists. I know the concert is still planned and more artists are committing. I can't confirm when yet, but it should become clearer soon. We siblings in this community always help each other in times of need. Lastly, I wish Thong eternal peace and rest."
