Legendary 90s Duo Singer Tong Wongtoo Dies of Cancer
Legendary 1990s duo singer Tong Wongtoo has died from stage-4 nasopharyngeal cancer at age unknown, with a planned benefit concert now redirecting proceeds to his family.
Chumpu Frutee mourned the loss of his close friend Tong Wongtoo today, revealing he had only learned of the serious illness three weeks ago when meeting Tor Wongtoo. Friends from RS Records and Grammy Records had planned a benefit concert on October 16 to help raise money for Tong's medical treatment, but he passed away before the event could take place. The concert will now proceed with proceeds going to his family.
The music industry is grieving the loss of Tong Wongtoo, a legendary duo singer from the 1990s, whose real name was Tong Surphan Jamlong Kul. He died from stage-4 nasopharyngeal cancer, with tributes pouring in from colleagues across the industry.
Chumpu Frutee, whose real name is Suthipong Watanajang, posted a tribute to his bandmate at RS Records, revealing that three weeks earlier when meeting Tor Wongtoo, he learned how seriously ill Tong had become. Friends had been preparing the benefit concert to help cover Tong's medical expenses, scheduled for October 16 at the Red Baron Beer Hall near the expressway.
Chumpu shared how their friendship had begun decades earlier: "One afternoon, Surachai called me to write a song for Wongtoo. Days later it became a song called 'She Is That Woman' and 'Our Life.' From that point on, I gained two more close friends: Tor and Tong."
Chumpu explained that he only discovered Tong's serious condition from Tor: "The wind blows here and there, but we still got to see each other. Three weeks ago at a copyright meeting with Tor, I found out how serious Tong's illness was. I still thought he might recover. Friends from both RS and Grammy were preparing the benefit concert to help him with medical costs, set for October 16 at the Red Baron Beer Hall near the expressway."
Chumpu revealed the concert will continue but its purpose has changed to benefit Tong's family: "Today, Tong has already passed on ahead. The concert will still happen, but now the proceeds will go to Tong's family. This is what we want to do together for Tong, and it's what Tong would have wanted to give to his family and to help with any difficulties they might face after he's gone."
Chumpu closed with a final farewell: "Today I will accompany Tong and prepare for his new journey. May your journey be smooth and worry-free about those left behind. Until we meet again, dear friend."
