Man Buys Gold Necklace for 50 Baht, Sells for Nearly 100,000
A man bought a gold necklace for 50 baht at a Bangkok market and sold it for nearly 100,000 baht after testing revealed it was 83 percent genuine gold, sparking online debate about whether the remarkable find was authentic.
On September 11, a TikTok account called Mangkorn Gold Melting 200 Year Rangsit, which buys and melts old gold, posted a video about a man's extraordinary luck. He purchased a gold necklace for 50 baht from The Mill Market in Rangsit, Pathum Thani, never suspecting it was genuine. After testing, the necklace was found to contain 83 percent gold weighing 24.30 grams. At the current gold price of 71,600 baht per baht weight, the necklace was valued at 94,881 baht. Combined with 9,844 baht from selling the silver box, the man received a total of 104,725 baht. His wife shed tears of joy upon learning that items bought for just 150 baht turned out to be genuine precious metals.
The post sparked widespread discussion online, with many asking for the market's location and others questioning whether the story was genuine. Some commenters expressed skepticism, wondering how a shop would miss such items. However, the shop owner defended the authenticity of the transaction in replies, explaining that the customer had visited multiple times, provided identification and phone numbers, and that the necklace was not standard-grade gold—making it difficult to identify without testing equipment. The owner also noted that the market frequently has rare bargains and encouraged people not to view the story as fabricated content, emphasizing they would not risk legal consequences for staged footage.
