Man Collapses After Drinking Beer and Eating Durian
A 55-year-old man collapsed in Ayutthaya after drinking beer all day and eating durian, with doctors unable to confirm if the combination triggered his symptoms or his pre-existing brain cancer was responsible.
On August 9, rescuers responded to a report of a 55-year-old man losing consciousness at a residential community near Wat Phananchoeang in Khlong Suan Plu subdistrict, Ayutthaya province. The man, identified as Mr. Anuphop, had been drinking beer since morning before eating durian in the evening, after which he showed abnormal symptoms, vomited, and became unresponsive to stimulation. Relatives immediately contacted rescue officials from Ayutthaya United Heart Foundation, who coordinated an ambulance to transport him urgently to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital. Beer bottles and durian remnants were found in the house.
Mr. Nakhrop, 50, the patient's younger brother, recounted that his brother had traveled from Bangkok and they drank beer together from morning until around 4 p.m., when the patient wanted durian and consumed about half of one. He then appeared drowsy and went to lie down, becoming unresponsive when called. Nakhrop stated he consumed the same beer and durian without symptoms.
Mrs. Orsa, 71, the patient's mother, explained that her son had come to visit her in Ayutthaya after a family disagreement about buying durian, as his siblings had previously forbidden him from eating it. She said he initially seemed normal while drinking with his brother, commenting that the durian was delicious, before gradually tilting backward, foaming at the mouth, and losing consciousness. She later learned her son had a pre-existing condition related to brain cancer.
As of the latest report, the patient remains unconscious under intensive care. Medical authorities have not yet determined whether the symptoms resulted directly from the combination of durian and alcohol, or if his underlying brain cancer condition was a contributing factor.
