The Cabinet has approved four labor laws and standards to raise worker protections for seafarers, homeworkers, and state enterprise employees in same-sex marriages. The new measures take effect retroactively from August 18, 2026, when the equal marriage law came into force.

Labor Minister Julphand Amorwiwattana announced that the Cabinet endorsed two bills and related labor guidelines to close legal gaps and extend protections across diverse worker groups, including vessel crew, homeworkers, and same-sex spouse employees of state enterprises. The reforms represent a major step in developing welfare systems and labor standards suited to modern employment models, organized into three main areas.

First, the amendments to the Maritime Labor Act will require employers to directly enroll seafarers into the social security and workers' compensation systems, granting them seven categories of benefits matching land-based workers and protecting them through the injury compensation fund. The law also explicitly prohibits vessel owners from employing crew members under 18 between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., to protect children and youth health and wellbeing, except for necessary training or duties required by law, aligning with the International Labour Organization's 2006 Maritime Labour Convention.

Second, amendments to the Homeworker Protection Act will expand coverage to digital-era work models such as online job platforms and extend protections across industrial, commercial, agricultural, and service sectors. The law sets a minimum working age of 15 and bans employers from using workers under 18 or pregnant women in hazardous work; hiring children under 15 carries penalties of up to two years imprisonment or fines of 400,000 to 800,000 baht. The law also establishes fair wage standards and imposes a 15 percent annual penalty interest if employers withhold wages or delay return of security deposits.

Third, a new declaration from the State Enterprise Labor Relations Committee will align state enterprise employee spousal benefits with equal marriage principles, ensuring all legally married spouses of any gender receive equal medical coverage, compensation, and funeral benefits. An estimated 12,000 people are expected to benefit from expanded medical coverage rights.

"Our goal is to close every legal gap and raise welfare for all worker groups, ensuring equal rights and protecting vulnerable populations including youth, freelancers, and spouses of all genders," said Julphand. "This is a crucial step for Thai society to uphold human dignity."

Deputy Labor Ministry Permanent Secretary Wanpong Kachruk clarified that maritime labor provisions apply to transport vessels rather than fishing vessels, benefiting crew members significantly. Regarding homeworker protections, the law will address three major areas and align with international standards.

A man angry over a past conviction has been accused of desecrating a Buddha image inside Wat Sarakhet temple in Songkhla's Muang District on August 17, prompting calls for police intervention. On August 18, temple students posted a complaint on Facebook describing the incident: "This guy is truly despicable. He put his underwear on the Buddha's head ornament and urinated on the reclining Buddha statue, leaving it foul-smelling." Reporters visited the scene and met with Phra Arthchai, a monk at the temple, who showed them inside the Sri Songkhla Buddha Relic Pagoda. They found black underwear draped over the head ornament of a reclining Buddha statue in the principal posture. Urine was visible on the statue's body, traced to the suspect who had climbed to the second level and knocked off the Buddha's crown. The suspect also damaged a ceremonial tray, scattered ashes from a reliquary, vandalized a merit donation box, and defaced the Emerald Buddha with an unknown substance, which temple staff have since cleaned but traces remain.

The suspect, identified as a 30-to-35-year-old man named Ne, was questioned. According to Phra Arthchai, two months earlier Ne had been found sleeping inside the pagoda. When the monk asked him to leave at 5 p.m. closing time, Ne refused and later caused extensive damage: he knocked over worship tables, broke flower arrangements and gold stands, scattered cremated remains, and damaged other items. The monk filed a police report at Muang Songkhla station. After two months, police called to say the theft charge lacked sufficient evidence and would instead be prosecuted as property damage and intimidation. Today, word arrived that Ne had been released from prison. It is believed he committed this latest act to announce his return. At 5 p.m. on August 17, Ne placed his underwear on the Buddha's crown and urinated on the principal reclining Buddha statue inside the Sri Songkhla Buddha Relic Pagoda.

"We ask police to investigate and monitor the temple to ensure the safety of our monks," the complaint states. "We are already living in fear because of the danger, and we are responsible for opening and closing the pagoda. We worry about physical attacks, especially since this person may be carrying a weapon."

Singer and host Andy Khemapimuk hosted a press conference for the concert "Pong Rock Legacy: From the First Memory to Never Forgetting" on August 17 at Hard Rock Cafe Bangkok in the Rachaprasong area. After the event, Andy opened up about his family's decision to hold a memorial ceremony for his friend Tae Thamman (also known as Tae Dragonfire) at sea in Sattahip on August 16, since Tae loved the ocean.

Andy recounted a mysterious moment at a Ford concert on Saturday. While enjoying drinks and socializing with entertainment industry friends, he felt a strong sensation like someone nudging him intensely. When he turned around, no one was there. He interpreted this as Tae warning him not to drink too much because he had to drive to Sattahip the next morning for the memorial ceremony. He said his friends witnessed this experience. Regarding Tae's presence, Andy shared that the family's spirits have improved. Tae's mother is doing much better and has been supported constantly by relatives and friends. Andy praised Tae's friends for their loyalty, describing Tae as more than a friend—someone who always kept him in check. During phone calls, Tae would encourage him saying things like "Stay strong, keep your cool." Andy expressed his love for Tae, often telling him to take care of himself.

When asked if Tae had visited him in dreams or sent signs, Andy said Tae doesn't visit him much initially, though Andy usually smells incense around him but not with Tae. However, something surprising happened: at Saturday's Ford concert, while Andy was having fun and drinking, he felt the strong nudge. At Sunday's memorial ceremony in Sattahip, Andy told Tae: "You don't need to go back to Rama 7 because your brother Mongkhalkitti is already there." Andy jokingly suggested Tae stay at the sea and forget about everything, since Tae worked hard during his life, constantly worried about his mother and loved his wife deeply. When asked what Tae was trying to communicate with that nudge, Andy said: "He was warning me not to get too drunk because I had to leave home at 6 a.m. and drive there on time." Andy noted that Tae was a drinker but never drank much; he was very health-conscious, unlike Andy who goes all out. Andy emphasized that Tae still cares consistently, both when he was alive and now. Two more victims from the Ladprao beer hall fire have died in hospital as of August 18, bringing the total death toll to 41. The fire occurred in the early morning hours of July 12 at the entertainment venue near Ladprao Soi 1, Chompol subdistrict, Chatuchak district, Bangkok, resulting in numerous injuries and deaths.

The two most recent deaths in hospital on August 18 are: Khem Miechai at Rajvithi Hospital and Tatsanai Manprapan at Taksin Hospital. This brings the total hospital deaths to 14 from this incident.

Actress Daraneenanuch paid her respects to Erwin, affectionately known as "Uncle Win" among her family, at his funeral.
