Man Released from Prison Desecrates Buddha Image in Temple

A man angry over a past conviction has been accused of desecrating a Buddha image inside Wat Sarakhet temple in Songkhla's Muang District on August 17, prompting calls for police intervention. On August 18, temple students posted a complaint on Facebook describing the incident: "This guy is truly despicable. He put his underwear on the Buddha's head ornament and urinated on the reclining Buddha statue, leaving it foul-smelling." Reporters visited the scene and met with Phra Arthchai, a monk at the temple, who showed them inside the Sri Songkhla Buddha Relic Pagoda. They found black underwear draped over the head ornament of a reclining Buddha statue in the principal posture. Urine was visible on the statue's body, traced to the suspect who had climbed to the second level and knocked off the Buddha's crown. The suspect also damaged a ceremonial tray, scattered ashes from a reliquary, vandalized a merit donation box, and defaced the Emerald Buddha with an unknown substance, which temple staff have since cleaned but traces remain.

The suspect, identified as a 30-to-35-year-old man named Ne, was questioned. According to Phra Arthchai, two months earlier Ne had been found sleeping inside the pagoda. When the monk asked him to leave at 5 p.m. closing time, Ne refused and later caused extensive damage: he knocked over worship tables, broke flower arrangements and gold stands, scattered cremated remains, and damaged other items. The monk filed a police report at Muang Songkhla station. After two months, police called to say the theft charge lacked sufficient evidence and would instead be prosecuted as property damage and intimidation. Today, word arrived that Ne had been released from prison. It is believed he committed this latest act to announce his return. At 5 p.m. on August 17, Ne placed his underwear on the Buddha's crown and urinated on the principal reclining Buddha statue inside the Sri Songkhla Buddha Relic Pagoda.

"We ask police to investigate and monitor the temple to ensure the safety of our monks," the complaint states. "We are already living in fear because of the danger, and we are responsible for opening and closing the pagoda. We worry about physical attacks, especially since this person may be carrying a weapon."

Deputy PM Orders Investigation Into Pattani University Political Event
21h ago Khaosod

At 11:30 am on August 18, Deputy Prime Minister Yasothon Wongsadet and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation gave an interview at Government House regarding a case where the Political Science Faculty at Prince of Songkhla University, Pattani campus, invited personnel from the People's Party to hold a seminar for students. Students who attended were offered 3 activity credits.

Yasothon said he has already spoken with the Permanent Secretary of the ministry and has requested data from the university to verify whether the event was conducted according to proper procedures. He learned of the matter from the media and wants to review more details before making a judgment, but emphasized that intellectual freedom cannot be restricted. His investigation will focus on whether the activity was organized and credited correctly.

When asked about the university's guidelines for such activities, Yasothon stated that such events already have freedom to be held, but if they are tied to course credits, it must follow proper criteria. If done correctly, they can proceed. Content guidelines are determined by each university's charter, overseen by the university council. He asked for clarification from the university first.

Asked whether new regulations would be issued nationwide if the activity was improper, Yasothon said each university has its own procedures and processes. If issues arise, each institution has established protocols. Student groups and faculty groups also have their own processes. The ministry's role is to ensure each university complies with its own charter. However, if anything is found improper, individual universities already have criteria and procedures in place to address it.

Andy Shares Mysterious Moment Before Friend's Memorial Ceremony

Singer Andy Khemapimuk reported experiencing a mysterious nudge at a concert, which he believes was his late friend Tae Thamman warning him not to drink before driving to a memorial ceremony at sea in Sattahip.

Andy Shares Mysterious Moment Before Friend's Memorial Ceremony

Singer and host Andy Khemapimuk hosted a press conference for the concert "Pong Rock Legacy: From the First Memory to Never Forgetting" on August 17 at Hard Rock Cafe Bangkok in the Rachaprasong area. After the event, Andy opened up about his family's decision to hold a memorial ceremony for his friend Tae Thamman (also known as Tae Dragonfire) at sea in Sattahip on August 16, since Tae loved the ocean.

Andy recounted a mysterious moment at a Ford concert on Saturday. While enjoying drinks and socializing with entertainment industry friends, he felt a strong sensation like someone nudging him intensely. When he turned around, no one was there. He interpreted this as Tae warning him not to drink too much because he had to drive to Sattahip the next morning for the memorial ceremony. He said his friends witnessed this experience. Andy explained that the family and relatives confirmed Tae had visited them too.

Regarding Tae's presence, Andy shared that the family's spirits have improved. Tae's mother is doing much better and has been supported constantly by relatives and friends. Andy praised Tae's friends for their loyalty, describing Tae as more than a friend—someone who always kept him in check. During phone calls, Tae would encourage him saying things like "Stay strong, keep your cool." Andy expressed his love for Tae, often telling him to take care of himself.

When asked if Tae had visited him in dreams or sent signs, Andy said Tae doesn't visit him much initially, though Andy usually smells incense around him but not with Tae. However, something surprising happened: at Saturday's Ford concert, while Andy was having fun and drinking, he felt the strong nudge. At Sunday's memorial ceremony in Sattahip, Andy told Tae: "You don't need to go back to Rama 7 because your brother Mongkhalkitti is already there." Andy jokingly suggested Tae stay at the sea and forget about everything, since Tae worked hard during his life, constantly worried about his mother and loved his wife deeply. Andy encouraged him to let go and move forward, promising to meet halfway.

When asked what Tae was trying to communicate with that nudge, Andy said: "He was warning me not to get too drunk because I had to leave home at 6 a.m. and drive there on time." Andy noted that Tae was a drinker but never drank much; he was very health-conscious, unlike Andy who goes all out. Andy emphasized that Tae still cares consistently, both when he was alive and now. Tae's voice still echoes in his ears, especially with a song written by Vespa called "You're Still Here." The bicycle theft case remains unsolved, and the family is awaiting police and family consideration before releasing additional CCTV footage.

Energy Minister Picks New Deputy Secretary After Vetoing Alternative

Energy Minister Eknath Promptpanya appointed Chanthanon Wankhachor as the new permanent secretary of the Energy Ministry on August 18, citing his experience and alignment with the four-year tenure requirement for the role.

Energy Minister Picks New Deputy Secretary After Vetoing Alternative
21h ago Khaosod

Energy Minister Eknath Promptpanya announced his choice of Chanthanon Wankhachor as the new permanent secretary of the Energy Ministry on August 18, 2025, at Government House. Eknath explained that Chanthanon was selected because he is a suitable fit for the role, particularly given the ministry's important pending work that requires experienced leadership and a willingness to reform operations. Although the Energy Ministry has several capable deputy secretaries, many have longer remaining tenure; Chanthanon's four-year tenure aligns well with the typical four-year term of a permanent secretary and avoids displacing officers with longer careers ahead.

When asked whether he personally proposed the appointment, Eknath clarified that the minister had already put forward the recommendation, which was then submitted to Deputy Prime Minister Songsakdi Tongsri and subsequently presented to the cabinet following normal procedure. He confirmed that there had been discussions and that while multiple candidates were considered, Chanthanon emerged as the most suitable after careful review.

Eknath dismissed suggestions that the appointment represented a political quota, laughing off the question. Regarding his earlier interest in Nattapol Rangsitpol, the permanent secretary of the Industry Ministry, Eknath acknowledged that Nattapol had been one option since permanent secretaries can be selected from other ministries or equivalent-ranked civil servants. However, he stressed that his focus was on current challenges and future work, not political connections. He noted that whoever is willing to work alongside him to tackle problems is welcome to join, adding that the road ahead will not be easy and requires determination from the team.

She reflected on the deep bonds between the two families spanning generations—from her father's time through her own. Daraneenanuch shared childhood memories of visiting Uncle Win's beautiful home on Chaiyot Lane, describing his orderly household, his elegant wife Khun Na Bunlom, and the discipline and warmth that defined their time together. "Uncle Win was called by that name at our house," she explained. "Our family and Uncle Win's family were friends from my father's generation right through to ours. My older sister was friends with his eldest daughter Jill, I was friends with his middle daughter Jan, and my father was friends with Uncle Win from way back." She recalled attending school together at Wathanawittayalai and later Triam Udom Suksa, how Uncle Win would sometimes pick her up when her father was busy, and the orderly rules at his home that taught respect and discipline. As they grew older, the families remained close, even traveling together to the Netherlands and Amsterdam. In his later years, Uncle Win moved in with Jan's family, where his great-grandson Punch created the popular Mumi Memories Facebook page that brought him widespread affection and made him an inspiration to many for his close family bonds. Daraneenanuch came to say goodbye with deep love and gratitude for Uncle Win's lifelong kindness to her family. The family announced that Erwin passed away peacefully on August 15, 2026, surrounded by grandchildren who came to say their final farewells.

A white sedan sideswiped and struck a motorcycle carrying a woman holding her 7-month-old baby on the back seat, according to a video posted on the Facebook page 'Sor Pao — This Needs Attention.' The incident occurred on Phet Kasem Road 69 in Bangkok as the motorcyclist and his wife, who was holding their 7-month-old child, were heading home. The impact sent both riders to the ground in a dangerous collision.

The family has filed an initial police report but expressed concern that the case may be quietly dismissed, and they are seeking advice on how to proceed. A witness at the scene who helped the victims revealed that the driver told them the collision was unintentional and that he had stepped on the accelerator by mistake. The driver apologized to those involved. The witness, who is a customer of the motorcyclist (a chicken vendor supporting his family), felt compassion for the 7-month-old child and wanted the incident to receive proper attention and fair resolution. The sedan driver may not realize that the collision was recorded on video from the witness's vantage point.
