Man United Fan Wakes at Red Light After Sleeping in Car
A Nonthaburi man fell asleep at a red light after staying up late to watch Manchester United play, blocking traffic until police towed his car and woke him. He was fined 4,000 baht for obstruction and driving with an expired license.
On September 14, at 6:20 a.m., Deputy Lieutenant Piriwat Somsoad of Nonthaburi City Traffic Police responded to a report of a BMW driver asleep at the wheel while stopped at a red light near the Rama 5 intersection on Phibul Songkram Road in Nonthaburi. Officers found a man in his 40s unconscious behind the wheel, blocking the middle lane and obstructing traffic. After attempting to wake him for more than 20 minutes without success, and concerned for his safety, police called a tow truck to move the vehicle to a nearby traffic booth. The driver then woke up and spoke with officers. He admitted to exhaustion from staying up late the previous night to watch a Premier League match between Manchester United and Manchester City, which caused drowsiness while driving. Fortunately, no accident occurred. Police charged the driver with two traffic violations: obstruction of traffic and an expired driving license, imposing a fine of 2,000 baht for each charge, totaling 4,000 baht, which he paid.
