Military Chief Defends Security Agency's Role
Thailand's Army Chief defended the Internal Security Command's nationwide security role, saying it coordinates multiple agencies to address challenges beyond southern border provinces including drug trafficking and violent incidents.
On July 8, 2025, at Army headquarters, General Chaiyapruks Duangpratham, the Army Chief of Staff and Secretary of the Internal Security Command (ISOC), explained the agency's scope following remarks by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Duangpratham clarified that ISOC is not limited to solving problems in southern border provinces but addresses security challenges nationwide by coordinating various specialized agencies and experts. The ISOC serves as a central hub integrating government units working together on security matters and assisting citizens affected by national security threats, including drug trafficking.
Duangpratham acknowledged that PM advisor Wan Muhammadnor Matha has the right to question and suggest improvements during parliamentary budget deliberations, which is the proper role of government oversight. He explained that ISOC employs approximately 1,000 personnel at its central office, with 170 permanent civil servants and others temporarily assigned from agencies like the Border Patrol Police and Ministry of Education.
The general noted that while ISOC may not be essential, someone must coordinate these security functions. He acknowledged government criticism about recent violent incidents—mothers and children killed, soldiers shot, police murdered, schoolchildren killed—and emphasized these are the real concerns requiring public cooperation. He stated that over 22 years, the security situation has cost many lives, and he remains committed to resolving these problems.
