Mobile signal on the islands off Koh Lanta: what the national park's own list says, and what it leaves out

The park lists AIS at all five places it names, from Ko Ha to the cave, and calls the signal on Ko Rok poor. Beyond that list we found no independent coverage data, only eSIM sellers.

Most of what is written about phone signal on Koh Lanta is written by people selling you a SIM card. The one official source we found is a short list on the national park's own page, and it covers just five places. It is also the part that matters most if you are heading out to the islands.

What the park says

The Department of National Parks page for Mu Ko Lanta National Park carries a list of mobile coverage by location, with the operator named beside each. It has no date, and the heading above the list is an image, so we could not read it. This is the list as written, in our translation:

  • Park headquarters: AIS
  • Ko Rok: True and True-DTAC, in some spots only. The page adds that the signal is received but is not very good.
  • Ko Tukkanlima, also called Ko Ha: AIS
  • Ko Ngai: AIS and True-DTAC
  • Khao Mai Kaew cave: AIS

Read plainly, AIS is named at all five places, and it is the only operator named at Ko Ha and at the cave. Ko Rok is the one place where the park says the signal is poor, and the only one where AIS is not listed.

What the park does not say

It does not say whether that is 4G or 5G, how recently anyone checked, or what "True-DTAC" means in practice for a phone on that network. It says nothing about the beaches on the west coast, such as Long Beach or Klong Nin, or about the south around Kantiang. Anything we could say about those would be a guess, so we are not saying it.

The commercial guides, with a warning

Travel eSIM sites say much more, and they broadly agree with the park: AIS holds a signal further out on the islands and the ferry routes, while True and dtac are fine in the main areas and weaker on the quiet side. One guide, updated this week, rates Koh Lanta "Good" overall and says AIS is stronger in the less developed south.

These are vendors. The guide we read most closely sells its own eSIM and runs a referral programme, and we found no beach-by-beach testing on any of them. We are reporting what they say, not recommending any of them, and we have linked none. It counts for something that sellers and the park point the same way, but it is not independent proof.

Two things the guides agree on are worth knowing. There is no signal on the ferry or on the boat to the islands, and it returns as you near the shore. And a foreign phone that struggles can often be fixed by choosing the network by hand instead of leaving it on automatic.

What we could not establish

We could not find any independent measurement of coverage for the island, and a Tripadvisor forum thread on the question would not open for us. For a reliable answer, ask the place you are staying which network works there, and for the park's islands ask the park, which lists 0 7565 6576 for visit enquiries. The illustration above is generated and shows no phone or mast.
