MP Calls for Court to Settle Senate Election Case
A ruling party MP called for Thailand's Supreme Court to resolve a contested Senate election case, citing public distrust of independent institutions and urging the government to focus instead on pressing economic and environmental problems
Bunyawi Yumchinda, a list-based MP and leader of the Ruam Jai Thai party, spoke in Parliament on September 16 during a session to discuss a Senate election court case. He said part of the problem stems from the Election Commission's failure to provide clear and detailed information to help the public understand the true political situation, and noted that media control allows certain groups to spread misinformation on social media, creating false concerns about government stability and prompting people to worry about another change of government after only six months in office.
Yumchinda emphasized that public distrust of independent institutions is damaging when their decisions have already been made, and argued the matter must go to court for judgment. He noted that the Supreme Court accepted the case on September 3 as Black Case Number 10/2569, with Akkrawat Phongthanachilit as the complainant against the Election Commission and two others. The court has scheduled an evidence hearing for October 27, 2569 at 10:00 a.m.
Yumchinda called for the government to use its time productively solving people's urgent problems instead of fighting over the Senate case. He highlighted severe hardship facing citizens, including food insecurity, job losses to Chinese investors setting up factories that pollute the environment and damage communities, and other continuous complaints from residents.
