Thailand Stuns Kyrgyzstan 3-2 In Asian Games Soccer Opener
Thailand's soccer team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Kyrgyzstan 3-2 in their Asian Games opener, with substitute Pariparp Vongsa scoring twice to spark the comeback in Group A play.
The Thai national team's Asian Games squad came from two goals down to beat Kyrgyzstan 3-2 in their opening Group A match of the 2026 Asian Games men's football tournament. Jehannafi Mama scored once, with Pariparp Vongsa adding two more goals as a substitute.
Coach Thawatchai Damrongongtrakul said after the match: "This was our first game and we hoped for three points. Our opponents were equally strong—we'd faced them before during FIFA international breaks. We went down 2-0 early on, but I have to praise the lads for their commitment and ability to come back. In the second half, we brought on more attacking players and they delivered what we needed."
On substitute Vongsa, the coach noted: "He's been with us for several camps and has good technical skills and finishing ability. We created many chances in the first half but couldn't convert them, so we added someone with better finishing. For the next game against Hong Kong, we hoped to earn at least four points from our first two matches, and we've got three from this one. If we win the next game, we'll be certain to advance to the knockout stage."
Thawatchai highlighted the team's spirit and unity: "This squad has trained together over many camps. There's belief among the players and the entire team—whoever comes in gives everything for their country. I want to thank everyone for serving the nation. We're ready to give our best in return."
The coach also thanked supporters, noting the team received a warm welcome in Japan, with local schoolchildren visiting training sessions.
Thailand's next match is against Hong Kong on September 20 at Toyota Stadium in Aichi, Japan, at 2 p.m. Thailand time. The match will be broadcast live on Channel 32 and AIS PLAY.
