National Disaster Alert: Heavy Rain Expected September 24–26
Heavy rain expected September 24–26 could trigger flash flooding and community waterlogging across Thailand, with some areas forecast to receive over 300mm of rainfall, though a major flood event comparable to 2011 is not anticipated.
On September 23, the Climate and Disaster Center at Rangsit University and the National Disaster Warning Foundation updated the risk assessment for heavy rain, flash flooding, and community flooding from September 24–26. High-risk areas have been identified and marked on detailed hazard maps. The center has assessed flood and waterlogging zones based on forecasts of accumulated rainfall exceeding 300 millimetres in the marked blue zones during the 24–26 September period, with a 5% probability (roughly a once-in-20-year rainfall event). For the central plains region in the Chao Phraya–Ta Chin river basin, a major flood event similar to 2011 is not expected because upstream water inflow is approximately 40% lower than it was then. However, heavy rainfall in the region during September 24–26 will cause localized flooding and water accumulation in communities, with severity varying by area depending on local drainage capacity. The foundation urges residents not to panic but to remain vigilant, assess their own risk and exposure, and prepare for potential impacts by staying weather-aware.
