A birthday celebration was held for Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin, featuring senior ministry officials on stage with the minister, along with a birthday cake and gift presentation. On July 15, 2025, the ministry issued a statement explaining that the event followed a management meeting called to prepare for the 2026 budget briefing and receive the minister's policy directives. The minister stressed work focused on public benefit, including tackling transboundary pollution, forest fires and smoke, climate change, land disputes, and cracking down on illegal logging—with clear distinction between ordinary citizens and business actors. The ministry noted that as it was the minister's birthday, staff observed the traditional custom of expressing goodwill, using a brief time slot after the policy briefing, and emphasized that the informal schedule reported was not official.

Nurse's Mother Fears Daughter Will Get No Compensation

The mother of a nursing assistant killed in the Ladprao beer hall fire says she's received no contact, apology, or compensation offer from the establishment's owners three days after her daughter's death, and the family has borrowed 50,000

Nurse's Mother Fears Daughter Will Get No Compensation
15h ago Khaosod

A nursing assistant's mother expressed deep concern three days after her daughter's death in the Ladprao beer hall fire that she has received no contact from the establishment's owners—not even an apology. The family has had to borrow 50,000 baht to cover funeral expenses, leaving them without their main breadwinner.

On July 15, 2026, reporters visited the home in Kokklang subdistrict, Lamphaiyamash district, Buriram province, where a merit-making ceremony was being held for Ms. Maneeratna Bomkhlang (nicknamed Jib), 38, a nursing assistant at a private Bangkok hospital and one of the victims of the Ladprao beer hall fire. Colleagues, acquaintances, relatives, and well-wishers have been steadily visiting to pay respects and offer support.

Her mother, Mayuree Bomkhlang, remains in deep mourning, unable to accept the loss of her beloved daughter. The family has scheduled chanting through the evening of July 17 and the funeral ceremony on Saturday, July 18 at Kokklang Temple. Sak Sarum, a parliamentary representative from Buriram's District 6, visited to offer condolences and present initial funeral assistance on behalf of the government.

Mayuree stated that since her daughter's death and the return of her body for the merit-making ceremony three days ago, no representative from the beer hall's owners has come to express condolences, apologize, or contact her about compensation. Not even a sympathy wreath has arrived. Although the bar owner's lawyer announced plans to provide 10,000 baht per victim for initial funeral expenses, no one has made contact.

She explained that her daughter was the family's main provider, supporting her parents and two younger siblings. The family has borrowed 50,000 baht, partly from her son-in-law, to cover funeral costs. She hopes that if compensation is received, it will help repay debts. However, she fears her daughter will receive no compensation, similar to victims from the two previous entertainment venue fires. She appealed to the bar owners to show compassion and help the bereaved families.

Nayoff, the husband of Ms. Maneeratna, stated that since his wife's death, no one from the bar has contacted them, apologized, or expressed condolences. He believes the establishment must have multiple owners who should take responsibility. He is concerned they will not receive compensation, as happened with victims of the two previous fires. He called on relevant government agencies to act as mediators in pressing the bar owners to take responsibility, noting that even the promised 10,000 baht funeral assistance has not been delivered. He also suggested that the bar's 40-million-baht fire insurance, which covers structure and property, should be used to compensate the deceased and injured. He urged the government to ensure justice for victims, as families alone lack the power to pursue such matters.

Fire Victims' Daughters Urge Beer Bar to Make Contact

Two women killed in a Ladprao beer bar fire on July 12 had their families appeal for direct contact from the bar's operators, citing repeated failed attempts to communicate through social media and difficulty claiming compensation.

The daughters of two women killed in the Ladprao beer bar fire are appealing to the bar's operators to contact them directly, rather than leaving the burden of communication solely on the families of the deceased. A memorial service was held on July 15 at Klong Luang District in Pathum Thani for Kachaphorn Sodaratana and Phanitcha Singkhorn, both victims of the fire on July 12. The daughters, 25-year-old Kanthitcha and 20-year-old Natthatitcha, revealed that they attempted repeatedly to contact the bar through its social media page but never received a reply. When they followed up at Phahonyothin Police Station, the bar's lawyer offered preliminary compensation of 10,000 baht, but they were unable to claim it due to ongoing communication problems. As the grieving families, they are now asking the bar's management to reach out to them. Wiratchai Hada, the subdistrict chief of Khlong Sam, also attended the service to express condolences to both families.

National Sports Fund Reviews Budget Allocations for 10 Associations
15h ago Khaosod

The National Sports Development Fund is pressing ahead with its review of criteria for classifying high-potential sports and establishing budget allocation guidelines for associations bearing the "of Thailand" designation in fiscal year 2027. The goal is to ensure allocations are appropriate, transparent, equitable, and consistent with the nation's sports development strategy, emphasizing efficient resource use and maximum impact.

The meeting was chaired by Thanuthep Janchum, manager of the National Sports Development Fund, and attended by representatives including Pol. Col. Intarat Yod Bangtai, advisory consultant to the subcommittee; Dr. Kittipong Potimoo, representative of the Thai Paralympic Committee; Pol. Lt. Col. Surpong Ariyamongkol, representative of the Sports Association Federation; and Santi Lohtong, representing the "of Thailand" sports associations, among others.

The meeting reviewed empirical data and documents submitted by sports associations, analyzing each association's potential, past performance, development plans, and key metrics to group sports appropriately and set funding levels matching each association's capacity.

In the first round of evaluation, ten sports associations submitted complete documentation and were grouped by potential as follows:

Group 1 (Highest Potential): 1 association—Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association

Group 2 (High Potential): None

Group 3 (Moderately High Potential): 2 associations—Thai Aeronautics and Aviation Sports Association Under Royal Patronage and Thai Cheerleading Association

Group 4 (Developing Potential): 7 associations—Thai Cab Baddy Sports Association, Thai Polo Association, Thai Wushu Association, Royal Motorcar Club of Thailand Under Royal Patronage, Thai Surfing Association, Thai Tug of War Association, and Thai Transplant Athletes Association

Sports associations may appeal their evaluation scores within 15 days of notification by submitting supporting evidence to the National Sports Development Fund. Following the subcommittee's assessment, results will be submitted to a screening subcommittee for approval, then to the fund's management board for final budget allocation approval for fiscal year 2027.

Among regular sports associations using the "of Thailand" designation, 52 have submitted complete documents, 10 have been evaluated, 42 are under review, and 38 have yet to submit. Among disability sports associations, 32 sports classifications have submitted documents while 22 have not.

Archaeologists Lift One-Ton Soil Block to Preserve Ancient Skeletons

Archaeologists Lift One-Ton Soil Block to Preserve Ancient Skeletons
15h ago Khaosod

PHETCHABURI — Archaeologists are preparing to lift a soil block weighing more than one tonne to safely remove the skulls of four ancient human skeletons, estimated to be 1,500–2,000 years old, from the Don Yai Thong archaeological site in Phetchaburi province.

The operation is being carried out by archaeologists from the Fine Arts Office 1 in Ratchaburi, working with conservation scientists from the Office of National Museums under the Fine Arts Department.

Reporters visited the excavation site at Ban Don Phlap, Moo 6, Samo Phlue subdistrict, Ban Lat district, on 15 July 2026, where excavations have continued since early July.

The site has already yielded four bronze drums, animal jawbones believed to belong to cattle or buffalo, and ancient human skeletons. On 2 July 2026, archaeologists also uncovered two gold rings. One bears a Brahmi inscription reading "Pusarakhitasa," meaning "one protected by the auspicious Pushya star."

According to Dr Uthen Wongsathit of Silpakorn University's Faculty of Archaeology, a specialist in ancient languages, the inscription is believed to date from the 5th–7th Buddhist centuries, or approximately 1,900–2,100 years ago.

The latest phase of the excavation focuses on Skeletons 1–4, whose skulls remain in the ground beneath ancient bronze ornaments covering the cranium. Other skeletal parts, including the torso, arms and legs, were removed earlier.

To prevent the fragile remains from breaking apart, the team is excavating around the skulls to create a rectangular soil block about 40–50 centimetres deep. Polyurethane (PU) foam is being applied on all four sides to stabilise the soil.

Workers are also digging beneath the block to insert a precast concrete slab, which will support the base before additional PU foam is injected underneath. Once reinforced, the entire soil block, together with the concrete base, will be lifted intact.

Archaeologists estimate the combined weight of the soil block and supporting slab at just over one tonne.

The work has proven particularly challenging because the first group of skeletons lies close to another burial containing Skeletons 5–8. Muddy ground conditions and groundwater continually seeping into the excavation pit have further complicated the delicate operation.

PHAYAO — Police have arrested a 65-year-old man accused of stealing a young woman's underwear from a dormitory in Phayao province after CCTV footage identified him as the suspect.

Investigators at Muang Phayao Police Station received a complaint on 15 July 2026 from Thikamphon Chaiya, 26, from Mae Chan district in Chiang Rai province.

She reported that underwear she had hung out to dry in front of Room 7 on the second floor of Sriwan Place dormitory in Tha Wang Thong subdistrict, Muang district, had disappeared.

CCTV footage showed an elderly man entering the dormitory, taking the victim's underwear from the drying rack and leaving the premises. The footage was submitted to police as evidence.

Police investigators traced the suspect through CCTV recordings and identified him as Pleng, 65, from Dok Khamtai district in Phayao.

A search of his home uncovered a motorcycle, helmet and clothing matching those seen in the surveillance footage. Officers also found women's underwear hanging on a clothesline, while another item was being worn by the suspect.

Police said the suspect confessed to the theft and admitted he had committed similar offences on several previous occasions because of a personal fetish.

Officers seized the evidence, took the suspect to the crime scene for a reconstruction, and later transferred him to Muang Phayao Police Station for further questioning before legal proceedings.

Thailand Plans Direct Flights From China, Europe to Surat Thani

Thailand's transport ministry is establishing direct flights from China and Europe to Surat Thani Airport to boost tourism to Samui Island, while implementing seamless baggage handling systems that deliver luggage directly to hotels.

Thailand Plans Direct Flights From China, Europe to Surat Thani
16h ago Khaosod

Transport Deputy Minister Pattrapong Pattraprasit is pushing to establish direct flight routes from China and Europe to Surat Thani Airport to boost tourism to Samui Island while developing seamless air and ground transportation systems. Pattrapong chaired a meeting with Suparerk Tongsuk, president of the Samui Tourism Promotion Association, and working groups to plan new international routes and improve baggage handling services for travelers. The key discussion centered on direct flight routes from China and Europe to Surat Thani Airport, targeting visitors from these regions to reduce congestion at major airports and distribute travel more evenly across the region. The initiative also includes seamless baggage transport systems. Efforts are underway to coordinate between airlines and private companies so passengers can clear customs and collect luggage at the port rather than the airport, with services extending to hotel delivery or final destinations, creating convenience and satisfaction for travelers. This coordination will enhance the travel experience, increase visitor numbers to Samui and surrounding areas, establish new tourism logistics standards, and create integrated air and ground transportation links. Pattrapong noted that direct international flights to Surat Thani Airport and seamless baggage systems will significantly boost revenue for the airport, Surat Thani province, and neighboring areas. He has instructed the airport authority to coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure convenient, efficient, and seamless travel for the public.

Thailand Shelves 40-Baht Rice Curry Price Support Program

Thailand has suspended a subsidy program aimed at capping curry prices at 40 baht per plate after widespread opposition from restaurant operators who argued the measure ignored broader cost pressures like rent, utilities, and labor.

Thailand Shelves 40-Baht Rice Curry Price Support Program
16h ago Khaosod

The Commerce Ministry's "Thai Rice Curry Helps Thailand" initiative, or 40-baht curry program, was designed to ease the public's cost of living as curry prices climbed past 50 baht per plate. The program targeted 100,000 restaurant sign-ups nationwide, offering ingredient subsidies of 3,000–10,000 baht per establishment for at least three months. Despite good intentions, the plan sparked opposition from restaurant operators and vendors countrywide. Ultimately, Deputy Prime Minister Supachai Suthammaphanth and the Commerce Minister suspended the program to review it and hear new perspectives. Critics contend the measure addresses the wrong problem, as restaurant costs involve far more than the price of pork, chicken, and vegetables—they also include gas, electricity, labor, rent, and rising transport costs. Short-term subsidies may provide temporary relief, but once the program ends, restaurants must shoulder their original costs while consumers expect prices to stay at the subsidized level. Moreover, a uniform nationwide price ignores regional cost variations; restaurants in high-rent urban and commercial zones would find it hard to compete if forced to sell at 40 baht. Many establishments might cut portion sizes or food quality, ultimately hurting consumers. The right approach is for the government to tackle root causes—controlling energy prices, raw material costs, and transport expenses—because if costs fall, curry prices will naturally decline through market forces. Currently, 30–40 baht curry already exists in many areas: community markets, hospitals, schools, and welfare shops. Although the 40-baht program never launched, stepping back demonstrates the government listens to all sides. The Commerce Minister, working closely with people's livelihood concerns, shows wisdom by remaining open to criticism and refining proposals before deciding—a path that reduces conflict and helps state policy address problems more effectively.

OKMD Invites Thais to Write Letters for the Future

OKMD invites Thais to write letters sharing their stories and life lessons for a new National Knowledge Center opening in three years, creating a public archive of contemporary experiences for future generations.

OKMD Invites Thais to Write Letters for the Future
16h ago Khaosod

The Office for Managing and Developing Knowledge (Public Organization), or OKMD, is inviting the public to participate in the "Letter for Later" project, which provides space for people to record stories, thoughts, feelings, and life lessons by writing letters to themselves or future generations. These contributions will feed into the new OKMD National Knowledge Center (NKC) on Ratchadamnoen Klang Road, scheduled to open in three years.

OKMD Director Dr. Tawarat Sootabut stated that Letter for Later is part of preparations for the NKC opening, designed as an open public learning space that integrates knowledge, technology, creativity, and public participation. It will become a landmark for learning and a new creative district in Bangkok, promoting lifelong learning and developing future skills for people of all ages.

Dr. Tawarat emphasized that the NKC is designed as more than just a learning center—it is a space where everyone can help build and share knowledge by connecting learning from books, research, technology, and real-world experiences. This allows learning to remain vital and reflect society's changes across different eras.

"We want this to be a learning space for everyone, and everyone can help build knowledge for society. The stories recorded through Letter for Later today will not only reflect the writer's life but will also become knowledge that helps future generations understand the way of life, thoughts, and hopes of people in this era deeply," Dr. Tawarat emphasized.

The director noted that Letter for Later represents the start of opening opportunities for public participation in building the National Knowledge Center even before it opens, transforming real-life stories into valuable knowledge for social learning and becoming part of the content that will grow alongside the NKC.

The project's special feature is giving people a chance to participate in the National Knowledge Center before it opens by recording their own stories, experiences, and perspectives to pass on as knowledge and inspiration to future generations.

The project has three main objectives: raising awareness about the OKMD National Knowledge Center, opening space for public participation through sharing stories, thoughts and life lessons, and collecting stories, experiences, and perspectives to pass on as knowledge and inspiration for future generations.

"Future learning doesn't come from expert knowledge alone but from the exchange of people's experiences, thoughts, and life lessons—all valuable knowledge that should be recorded, shared, and applied to society. Letter for Later is therefore not just a letter-writing activity but an invitation for people to help build the nation's knowledge through their own stories, because we believe that today's stories are the knowledge that will best help future generations understand our society," Dr. Tawarat said.

Interested participants can join from June 30 to September 20, 2569, through two channels: writing letters online at theletter.okmd.or.th or writing at designated Letter Stations.

Government M16s Used in MP Shooting Probe Deepens
16h ago Khaosod

As previously reported, if the shooting case against MP Kamlasak Leevamaoh stalls without reaching those who ordered it, it will impact the overall situation across three southern provinces, and calls to dissolve the National Reform Council will not fade. The connections are undeniable.

While police investigations have stalled, the Democrat Party and parliamentary committees continue their work. Scrutiny of security agencies with relevant evidence is intensifying.

The emerging issue is tracing the M16 rifles used in the shooting, both seized by police, which will lead directly to the Royal Thai Navy Weapons Department.

Both M16 rifles recovered by police and used to fire on MP Kamlasak's vehicle are military-issued weapons. One rifle belonged to the Navy but was registered as damaged and marked for destruction, yet it turned up in the hands of the shooting team. How did this happen?

The problems are twofold: the weapon's naval origin and the fact that it was listed as destroyed but was still used to commit a crime. Records show 40 rifles marked for destruction—raising questions about how many other "phantom guns" are out there being used in various crimes.

The parliamentary committee on law, justice, and human rights, chaired by Rangsimanth Rom with Deputy Democrat Party Leader Thawi Sodsor serving as a member, has coordinated with the Royal Thai Navy Weapons Department to hold a joint meeting in Chachoengsao.

The discussion will cover the entire weapons management system, from procurement and control to disposition, as well as orders from responsible officials to destroy weapons. The committee will visit destruction sites.

The committee has also invited the Navy commander to explain how the M16 rifles were received, distributed, and allocated to operational units.

The investigation will trace the weapon from the crime scene back to its source, examining the distribution process and destruction procedures—and how it ended up in the hands of those targeting the MP. They may also uncover other weapons.

The more concealed this case becomes, the more it unravels.
