PM Visits Flood-Hit Nakhon Sawan, Promises Full Government Aid
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited flood-stricken Nakhon Sawan, handed out 500 relief packs, and assured full government support. He joked that opposition MP Sanya Nillsuphan is not an enemy and can be called to work, while noting drainage challenges due to Gulf of Thailand tides. The visit highlighted efforts to shelter elderly and patients and to speed up flood mitigation.
Anutin spoke with villagers, encouraged those fighting the floods, and greeted elderly people staying at a temporary shelter. He said the current inconvenience stems from above-average rainfall affecting most of the Chao Phraya River basin, including Bangkok where floodwaters reach chest level, and that the government is working hard to restore normal conditions quickly. He noted that sheltering elderly and patients there eases relatives' worries and provides a safe place during the disaster. The Nakhon Sawan provincial administration will give full support, and the government will speed up disaster mitigation, especially water drainage and management to keep water away from homes. However, water pumped out can flow back during high sea tides in the Gulf of Thailand, as Bangkok lies below sea level, so pumping must be timed carefully. Anutin said tasks have been assigned to deputy prime ministers, ministers, the Interior Ministry, provincial governors, district officers, and local administrators to look after the public fully. Officials visited the site to assess conditions, identify gaps, and order actions to improve convenience and reduce anxiety. He acknowledged the distress of residents, especially elderly and bedridden patients, which raises worries, and stressed the need to set up shelters for safe accommodation. Relief measures for natural-disaster victims will be provided by the government.
