Thailand Launches Operation Against Illegal Cryptocurrency Mining Networks

Thai authorities dismantled illegal cryptocurrency mining networks using stolen electricity in coordinated raids across seven locations, with the Prime Minister vowing strict prosecution of operators, investors, and any complicit officials.

Thailand Launches Operation Against Illegal Cryptocurrency Mining Networks
23 Jul Khaosod

Prime Minister Anuthidh Savastiprasong led the announcement of Operation SILENT VOLT results, which dismantled networks involved in illegal electricity use for cryptocurrency mining. The operation is expanding prosecutions and seizing assets for state ownership.

On July 23, 2025, at 9:50 AM at the Santitham Building within Government House, Prime Minister Anuthidh Savastiprasong and the Interior Minister presided over the Operation SILENT VOLT press briefing, announcing coordinated raids at seven locations to dismantle the illegal electricity network supporting cryptocurrency mining operations.

Justice Minister General Rutpol Naorat, DSI Commissioner Police Major General Yuthana Phraedamrong, Technology and Information Crime Division Director Police Colonel Khemchai Prakay Hongmani, and Provincial Electricity Authority Governor Mongkol Treekitjanan joined the announcement.

Prime Minister Anuthidh emphasized that the government takes seriously the suppression of all forms of technology-enabled crime, particularly illegal electricity use for cryptocurrency mining operations, which exploits society, damages state property, threatens electrical grid stability, and undermines confidence in the nation's law enforcement. The government has tasked all relevant agencies—the DSI, Provincial Electricity Authority, security agencies, and law enforcement—to work closely together to investigate thoroughly and prosecute offenders completely, including operators, investors, supporters, and any state officials who may be involved, without exception or discrimination.

The Prime Minister stated that government action aims not merely at arrests or asset seizures but at breaking the cycle of technology-enabled economic crime. The government will employ all applicable legal measures, including prosecution, asset tracking, and network expansion investigations to prevent recurrence.

The government will support technology use and digital economy activities conducted transparently and fairly within legal frameworks but will not permit technology to serve as a channel for pilfering state resources or damaging the nation's economic and utility systems.

The Prime Minister assured the public that the government will enforce laws seriously and continuously, coupled with enhanced monitoring and proactive inspections to protect national interests, maintain energy security, and create a fair business environment for law-abiding entrepreneurs.

Regarding the greatest damage from illegal electricity use, the Prime Minister noted that the most severe cases involve direct-line connections through transformers from the Provincial Electricity Authority, which consume enormous amounts of electricity and cause substantial state losses requiring full enforcement action.

Seizure of equipment alone is insufficient because such assets retain value only when used operationally. When dismantled and sold piecemeal, they have little worth, as technology assets deteriorate rapidly and lose value quickly. Equipment seized and held for two to three months becomes worthless.

The Prime Minister emphasized the focus should be on identifying supporters, operators, customers, and which state officials allowed illegal electricity use, noting they cannot claim ignorance. Such massive electricity consumption must be monitored by the Provincial and Metropolitan Electricity Authorities at source and destination points.

A Chon Buri pickup driver damaged a delivery rider's motorcycle after mistaking his singing for shouted insults, with the 50-year-old driver later admitting the misunderstanding and agreeing to compensate for damages.

Food delivery rider’s singing causes misunderstanding, resulting in road rageLegacyA Thai pickup driver damaged a motorcycle of a food delivery rider on a road in Chon Buri yesterday, July 22, mistakenly believing the victim was shouting vulgarities at him when he was actually singing. The Chon Buri road rage incident occurred at about 3.30pm and was widely shared on Thai social media. The 24 year old rider, identified as Thanawat, later reported the incident to Saen Suk Police Station, accompanied by about 20 fellow delivery riders who came to show their support. Video footage circulating online shows two men getting out of a white pickup truck and confronting Thanawat. The rider managed to avoid being struck, after which one of the men kicked his motorcycle to the ground, causing damage. According to Thanawat, he had just completed a food delivery and was travelling to his next customer while singing to himself. He said he passed the white pickup travelling in the opposite direction before the driver suddenly turned around and began following him. Photo via KhaoSod Thanawat told police he pulled over after noticing the pickup behind him. He said the driver accused him of shouting insults during the encounter, but he insisted he had simply been singing. The rider also alleged that the driver instructed the passenger to retrieve a knife from the pickup before damaging the motorcycle. According to Thanawat, the situation ended after a bystander intervened and separated those involved. Police later summoned the pickup driver, identified as 50 year old Thaworn, for questioning. Thaworn admitted he had mistaken the rider’s singing for a complaint directed at him. He acknowledged losing his temper and agreed to compensate Thanawat for the damage caused to the motorcycle. Photo via KhaoSod Speaking to KhaoSod, both Thanawat and Thaworn urged motorists to remain calm during disagreements on the road to prevent similar confrontations. The incident follows a similar case reported last year in which another motorcyclist was mistaken for verbally confronting another road user while singing as he rode. Although the rider apologised to defuse the situation, he later pursued legal action after footage of the incident went viral. In another separate case in Pattaya, a food delivery rider was assaulted with an iron bar after swearing when he encountered a motorcyclist travelling in the wrong direction. The police have not provided any further updates on the investigation.

Manop Fires Back at Krathomdham Over Agriculture Ministry Criticism

Manop Fires Back at Krathomdham Over Agriculture Ministry Criticism
23 Jul Khaosod

Manop Charoensri, Nakhon Phanom MP and deputy leader of the Pheu Thai Party, issued a response on July 23, 2025, regarding Lt. Gen. Thammanat Prommapan's Facebook post about personnel transfers at the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry. While acknowledging that the opposition has the right to criticize government performance, Manop noted that Krathomdham has consistently attacked the agriculture ministry and Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit's work, despite Suriya's demonstrated commitment to improving farmers' livelihoods.

Manop questioned whether Krathomdham's discredit campaign reflects frustration over their own failed tenure managing the agriculture portfolio, and whether they are applying their own former practices as a benchmark to judge the current administration. She challenged them to address facts, such as longstanding problems with shrimp and fish quotas and school milk programs that originated during Krathomdham's ministerial period.

Regarding personnel appointments under Suriya, Manop emphasized they were made on merit, suitability, and adherence to civil service rules—with no position-buying or personal benefit negotiations. She urged all parties to evaluate government performance based on facts rather than rumors, which she said damage staff morale. Manop affirmed her long acquaintance with Suriya and confidence in his integrity, calling for transparent scrutiny grounded in evidence rather than speculation.

Woman Arrested After 19 Years Evading Attempted Murder Charges

Woman arrested in Bangkok after 19 years on the run for her role in a 2007 attempted murder case in which she and an accomplice stabbed a man during a confrontation over an affair.

Woman Arrested After 19 Years Evading Attempted Murder Charges
23 Jul Khaosod

On July 23, 2025, police arrested a 50-year-old woman named Prapai (pseudonym) pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Trang Provincial Court on September 13, 2007, on charges of attempted murder. She was apprehended near a transport company in Bangkok's Pathumwan district.

The incident began in 2007 when a man named Kasatorn discovered his wife, Prapai Pattana, was having an affair with a man named A (pseudonym). After a heated argument, the two suspects called Kasatorn on September 10, 2007, to meet for a discussion. During the return journey, another confrontation erupted. The suspect named A kicked Kasatorn's motorcycle, causing him to fall, then stabbed and slashed his neck with a knife while Prapai held him down to prevent self-defense. Believing the victim dead, both suspects fled. However, police discovered Kasatorn still had vital signs and rushed him to the hospital, where he survived and provided testimony.

The man named A was later apprehended, convicted, and imprisoned. Prapai, however, evaded capture for over 19 years by constantly changing addresses and workplaces across multiple provinces. She eventually settled working at a transport company in Bangkok's Pathumwan district, living in a company truck driven by her current husband. During interrogation, she denied participation, claiming she was merely present and riding in the same vehicle, having taken no active role in the attack. She has been transferred to Nong Trud Police Station for further legal proceedings.

23 Jul Khaosod

Authorities are investigating an armed assault on rangers manning a checkpoint at Buketsami in Rangae District, Narathiwat, that claimed five lives on July 22 at 6:45 p.m. Overnight, senior officials including Narathiwas Governor Bunchuay Hommyamyen coordinated the scene investigation with bomb disposal experts and forensic teams collecting evidence. Investigators discovered three types of ammunition scattered at the checkpoint, including over 100 M16 and AK-47 cartridges plus 11mm handgun shells, along with a pipe bomb the attackers threw toward the guard post. The deceased rangers are: Sergeant Major Thirayut Somakerd, 43; Private First Class Wimol Dab Thong, 43; Private First Class Sakariya Janaruea, 23; Private First Class Natsit Kaewsena, 34; and Private First Class Solahuddin Pi, 34. Authorities found that attackers stole four bulletproof vests, four ammunition pouches, and one 11mm handgun after the rangers fell. Security camera footage revealed more than 10 assailants divided into two teams: the first group drove a black Nissan pickup truck carrying six men in black uniforms resembling ranger fatigues with face-covering caps; the second team rode a white-and-red Honda Wave motorcycle, with the driver in a white shirt and helmet carrying an 11mm handgun, and the passenger disguised in a black hijab wielding an AK-47, following behind as rear guard. The attackers approached via Tan Yong Mas Market Road, with the motorcycle escort leading. Upon reaching the checkpoint where three rangers stood, the gunmen slowed the pickup and opened fire with M16s and AK-47s from the truck bed. After rangers fell, the attackers stopped to deliver follow-up shots, then descended to seize four folding-stock AK-47s and one 11mm handgun along with four ammunition pouches before fleeing toward Do Song Noi Subdistrict, Chanae District.
