A group of rescue volunteers have been suspended after allegedly attacking a taxi driver in Bangkok, leaving him seriously injured in an incident that was captured on video and widely shared on social media.

The incident, which took place on 12 August, reportedly involved three to four rescue volunteers chasing and assaulting the taxi driver before the confrontation continued to MRT Fai Chai station.

Video footage circulating online showed several rescue volunteers surrounding and assaulting the taxi driver near the station's coin exchange area after he had run there seeking help.

Following the incident, both the rescue volunteers and the taxi driver reportedly filed complaints at Bang Khun Non Police Station.

The confrontation was reportedly sparked by a dispute over driving, with the parties allegedly cutting each other off and one vehicle following closely behind the other.

The taxi driver suffered serious injuries, including broken ribs, a broken nose and a fractured cheekbone. His taxi was also damaged after its windows were smashed, with damage reported around the vehicle.

Following the incident and the circulation of the video online, the foundation overseeing the rescue volunteers ordered the group to be suspended and barred them from carrying out volunteer duties pending further action.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.

Justice Minister General Rutthapol Naovaratna addressed the detention of Chalerm Riewrang, a former Nonthaburi MP accused of shooting the Nonthaburi Provincial Administration Organization chief, stating that his placement at Nonthaburi Prison followed standard procedures and control protocols with no special measures. When asked whether special care was needed because he is a politician, the Justice Minister said there was nothing exceptional about the case, as prison officials already have their own care management system in place. He noted that no special instructions were issued within the prison, as internal procedures require staff to care for all detainees uniformly, a system the facility has followed for years.

Officials Face Backlash Over Rifles as Prize Giveaway at Village Festival

Officials at a Koh Phangan village festival faced backlash after offering five shotguns as raffle prizes, contradicting a government firearms safety directive announced just days earlier.

Officials Face Backlash Over Rifles as Prize Giveaway at Village Festival

A celebration of the 134th anniversary of Village Chief Day on August 10 at Koh Phangan has sparked intense social media criticism after images showed five long-barreled shotguns being offered as raffle prizes to lucky attendees at the event. The celebration also featured a live concert by a well-known social artist to entertain guests. The main focus of heavy criticism centered on the appropriateness of offering five shotguns as raffle prizes.

The timing of the event is particularly contentious because on August 7, Prime Minister Sanyavut Sayma and Interior Minister had just announced efforts to ensure maximum public safety regarding firearms. An Interior Ministry directive signed by the Prime Minister and Interior Minister prohibits the carrying of firearms, even for government officials when off duty, in public places or outside residences. The restriction applies even more strictly to ordinary citizens. Critics argue that offering guns as prizes contradicts the government's stated firearms safety policy.

Man with Mental Illness Attacks Driver After Road Rage Incident

A man with a mental illness attacked a driver during a road rage incident in Nonthaburi after a dangerous motorcycle chase, punching him beneath a road underpass while the driver defended himself with a wooden stick.

A man with mental illness caused a school disturbance in Nonthaburi, fled on a motorcycle while being pursued, and attacked a car driver in a second incident on the street. Police are searching for him.

On August 12, 2026, at Bang Bua Thong Police Station in Nonthaburi, 44-year-old Gor filed a complaint with investigators stating that he was attacked by an unknown man riding an unregistered motorcycle who swerved left and right, nearly hitting another motorbike.

The attacker then shouted at Gor to pull over. When the victim stopped his car, the man approached him and punched him, causing injury. The incident occurred beneath a road underpass at the Sai Noi intersection in Bang Bua Thong Subdistrict, Bang Bua Thong District, Nonthaburi, at 9:10 a.m. today.

Footage from a bystander's phone camera captured the area on the Bang Kruay-Sai Noi Road heading toward the Sai Noi District crossing, opposite the Bang Bua Thong Courtesy Project area, showing the victim's white car stopped in traffic lane 2 with the trunk open. The attacker approached and spoke to the victim, who was holding what appeared to be a wooden stick. The victim pushed the attacker away, but the man punched him hard. The victim then used the wooden stick to strike the attacker.

Gor, 44, explained that while driving from Sai Noi toward Bang Bua Thong Market, he encountered the suspect beneath the underpass. The attacker was riding a motorcycle in the oncoming lane, so Gor honked. Then a motorbike overtook him and collided with the suspect's bike. They argued loudly, and the suspect swerved left and right. Fearing a collision, Gor refused to stop initially because he wanted to avoid trouble.

When Gor reached the curve leading into Bang Bua Thong Market, the attacker continued to challenge him. Unable to tolerate it any longer, Gor pulled over to confront him. Thinking the man looked physically imposing, Gor retrieved a wooden stick from his car trunk as a precaution. When the attacker approached, Gor pushed him away. The man claimed he had been hit and punched Gor in the face. Gor then struck the attacker with the stick once, breaking it, and they exchanged several more punches before the attacker rode away in the opposite direction. Gor pursued him, ready to ram if necessary. A bystander filmed part of the incident but only captured the confrontation point, not the earlier part that could serve as evidence.

Initially, the attacker has been identified as Yuttha or Bang Reem, a man with a mental health condition who caused a disturbance at a school and fled on a motorcycle from officers earlier that morning. Investigators have compiled evidence for police to pursue the suspect.

Nabil Dismisses Critics, Vows to Prove Himself in Olympic Trials

Former ONE Championship Muay Thai champion Nabil Anane defended his selection for Thailand's 2028 Olympic boxing team, dismissing criticism and pledging to prove himself through official Olympic trials set for 2028.

Nabil Dismisses Critics, Vows to Prove Himself in Olympic Trials

ONE Championship, the Thai Amateur Boxing Association, and the Thai Olympic Committee announced on August 14, 2025, their support for Nabil Anane, a former ONE Championship bantamweight Muay Thai champion, to compete in Olympic boxing on behalf of Thailand's team at the 2028 Games. The announcement sparked considerable criticism regarding the selection process for Thailand's Olympic boxing roster.

Nabil Anane has since posted a clarification video on his personal Facebook, noting that the news had only just emerged and he had not yet made any official statement or provided details when criticism began. He stressed that he fully understands the need for proper selection trials to join the national team.

"When the news came out about me competing in the Olympics, it had barely been reported," Nabil said. "I hadn't even made an announcement yet, and I was already under fire. The Olympics aren't until 2028, so there's still plenty of time."

"People say I'm inexperienced or jumping in unfairly—obviously there has to be a selection process. This is Olympic-level boxing; I understand that. It's not like I just train and then go win a medal. Selection trials are normal." He continued: "I know I have to go through tryouts. If I don't make it, fine. There are other boxers too. If someone else is more capable, they should go instead of me. I just want the chance to try. If I pass the trials, great. If I don't, let the ones who did go. I'm confused—I haven't even done anything yet and the news just came out and I'm already being attacked. Never mind. I'll show you instead of talking about it. I'll prove I can do it too."

Deputy PM Seeks Stricter Gun Laws Using Foreign Model

Thailand's deputy PM plans to modernize the decades-old gun laws with stricter controls including digital registration, three-year licenses, and rigorous owner screening modeled on international standards to close loopholes in the current m

Deputy PM Seeks Stricter Gun Laws Using Foreign Model
6d ago Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister Pokhorn Nilpraband has announced plans to revise the Firearms Act of 1947 through consultations with the Interior Ministry and the Office of the Council of State. The current law, unchanged since 1947, relies on an outdated analog system where district officers approve permits and issue paper licenses with no coordination between gun shops, buyers, owners, and sellers. Pokhorn explained that the new system must track firearms from import through ownership and use, mirroring stricter international standards similar to banking protocols but with greater rigor due to the lethal nature of weapons.

The government proposes making licenses valid for three years instead of indefinitely, implementing rigorous transfer controls, and monitoring usage. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has directed the adoption of these measures to prevent firearms from being used as collateral for loans—legally prohibited since guns are registered property. The new system would also require closer supervision of shooting ranges and strict correlation between firearms and ammunition, as current regulations allow far more ammunition than guns in circulation. Pokhorn stressed that gun ownership demands high responsibility from dealers and owners alike, with thorough behavioral assessment of purchasers, similar to foreign gun shop procedures.

To prevent loopholes in ownership transfers, Pokhorn stated that all gaps must be closed and real-time verification implemented. Once a firearm is purchased, it must be immediately registered with the new owner details, creating continuous monitoring throughout the system. The reforms would also cross-check with the Revenue Department to ensure proper taxation of firearms sales. Currently the system is entirely manual and decentralized, making errors frequent and tracking difficult, which is why the Prime Minister mandated digital real-time verification to create a fully integrated national firearms registration system.

On August 12, Phongpichai Chaiyananpiriya, superintendent of Thung Yai Police Station in Nakhon Si Thammarat, addressed circulating reports that a former minister struck a deputy officer at the funeral of a local politician's mother in the Prig subdistrict of Thung Yai district. Phongpichai said he learned of the reports from social media that morning and had received no official complaint of assault from the deputy in question, nor had any member of the public come forward to report witnessing such an incident. After directly questioning the deputy officer, Phongpichai said the officer firmly denied the assault allegations and explained that he has known the former minister for many years and that they are family relatives who respect each other like siblings. As the superintendent and a direct witness to the officer's account, Phongpichai said he must accept the deputy's account, as he himself was not present at the reported incident.

Phunida Demands Election Commission Clarify 860,000-Baht Money Trail

A Pheu Thai deputy spokesman says the Election Commission's explanation of an 860,000-baht payment to an investigator lacks crucial details about whether it relates to Senate elections and what consequences will follow.

6d ago Khaosod

On August 12, Phunida Mongkolswat, Samut Prakan MP and deputy spokesman for the Pheu Thai Party, spoke to reporters after the Election Commission released a statement addressing a suspicious 860,000-baht money trail connecting a blue-faction politician in Amnat Charoen province with an Election Commission investigator.

Phunida said the Election Commission's clarification did not adequately answer key questions. "The commission only explained that it had assigned this officer to conduct inquiries related to Senate elections," she noted. She added that while the statement confirmed that the money was received—as revealed by Prisat Vattharasindu, a Pheu Thai party-list MP and opposition coalition coordinator—there was no clarification on whether the transaction was connected to Senate elections or what further action the commission would take beyond dismissing the officer. "These are questions that need answers from the Election Commission," Phunida said.
