Surat Thani Governor Clarifies Gun Prize Was Symbolic, Not Actual
Surat Thani's governor clarified that a shotgun displayed as a prize at an August 10 village headman celebration in Koh Phangan was symbolic only, with winners actually receiving 15,000-20,000 baht in cash instead.
The governor of Surat Thani province, Chumpot Wancharoen, has clarified that a shotgun depicted as a prize at a village headman anniversary celebration was merely symbolic, with actual rewards distributed as cash. The evening celebration on August 10 at Koh Phangan district administrative grounds, attended by government officials, local politicians, police, and community members, featured performances and a raffle draw. Images of the symbolic shotgun prize circulated on social media, sparking public questions about firearms being distributed at an official event.
According to the district chief, the ceremony has traditionally offered cash incentives to village headmen and volunteers, using a firearm as the symbolic representation of the award, though no actual weapons are transferred. Winners receive between 15,000 and 20,000 baht in cash, and any decision to purchase a licensed firearm remains entirely at the recipient's discretion and must comply with all legal firearm acquisition procedures. The governor emphasized that the awards are meant to boost morale among village leaders and administrative staff who assist throughout the year.
The clarification comes amid provincial concerns over firearm control following recent security incidents. Officials have reiterated that any purchase or possession of firearms must follow strict legal channels and regulations without exception, regardless of recipient status.
