Student Found Unconscious After Carrying Stillborn Baby to Police
A university student from Sakon Nakhon collapsed at a police checkpoint in Udon Thani on September 13 while carrying her stillborn baby in a travel bag, seeking help to arrange its cremation after delivering prematurely at her dorm.
On September 13, 2025, police at Udon Thani City Police Station received a report of a young woman who had lost consciousness at a security checkpoint in the Sam Phrao area of Muang District, Udon Thani, with a dead infant also present. Police and rescue workers immediately responded to the scene, with Lieutenant Colonel Samprasong Phalap, the Sam Phrao area chief, supervising the investigation.
Investigators found that the child's mother was a fourth-year university student from Sakon Nakhon Province, while the father was a third-year student at the same university. The couple was dating when she became pregnant. When the father learned of the pregnancy, he demanded she have an abortion, but she refused because she herself had grown up as an orphan and did not want her child to experience the same trauma. She decided to keep the baby without seeking proper prenatal medical care, continuing to attend classes while pregnant. Eventually, the father decided to end the relationship and refused to take responsibility, abandoning her.
According to the area chief, the student had previously consulted with monks at Sam Phrao Temple about cremating the child, but the monks were unwilling to proceed without knowing the full circumstances. This led community leaders and police to investigate and request a forensic examination of the body.
The student had been pregnant for approximately seven months when she went into premature labor in the middle of the night at her dormitory. The baby was stillborn, and due to the premature delivery, the infant's body was too weak to survive. Shocked and unsure where to turn, the mother placed the baby's body in a travel bag intending to have it cremated at Sam Phrao Temple. When the monks refused to cremate the infant, she traveled to the Sam Phrao Police Checkpoint in Muang District seeking help from officers to arrange the cremation at the temple, where she subsequently lost consciousness.
Community leaders and police then investigated and sent the infant's body for detailed forensic autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The child's mother was taken to a hospital for medical assistance. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances and are following up with the child's father, the university student, for further questioning.
