The father of a 15-year-old Grade 9 student has disclosed the trigger behind his son's armed attack at a school in Kamphaeng Phet, saying the boy had been undergoing treatment for depression and citing stress as the cause. The father revealed he had previously attempted to hide the gun and harbored concerns that such an incident might occur.
A 15-year-old Grade 9 student being treated for depression used a 9mm weapon to open fire at a school in Nakhon Chum District, Muang Subdistrict, Kamphaeng Phet Province, firing from the school grounds into the main building and alarming staff and students.
On August 3, 2025, Deputy Police Region 6 Commander Thammasak Bintong visited the scene to follow up on the case. He met with Kamphaeng Phet Provincial Police and education officials to establish preventive measures and verify facts.
The father of the student alleged that his son had become angry with a teacher before carrying out the shooting. He stated his son had been suffering from depression for some time, revealed stress was the cause, and said he had tried to hide the gun. He expressed prior concern that such an incident might occur.
Meetings were held with Kamphaeng Phet Provincial Police and education personnel to establish preventive measures and investigate the facts. The incident concluded well because network partners had conducted effective emergency response drills. More than three hours were spent in meetings to find joint solutions, held in the Kamphaenglea Conference Room at Kamphaeng Phet Provincial Police Headquarters.
Deputy Commander Thammasak stated that stakeholders were invited to discuss measures to prevent this incident from inspiring copycat acts in the future. He emphasized the focus was on prevention rather than punishment. Measures would be put in place to prevent similar incidents going forward. Multiple topics were discussed but details were withheld. All parties reached consensus and planned to discuss the matter further at provincial level. Security measures at schools in Kamphaeng Phet have already been intensified by both education and police authorities, with protocols elevated in response to this and related incidents. Strict measures are already in place, and any shortcomings revealed by today's event will be addressed with supplementary measures to prevent recurrence.
After normal classes resume, security remains a priority. While police officers may not need to be stationed inside schools, regular patrols and inspections are a standing duty that will be emphasized. Additional interaction between teachers has also been stressed.
Regarding reports that the student had previously brought a weapon to school but the incident was covered up, Chutamas Wongkhiao, Director of Wachirprakarn Witthayakhom School, stated that the school confirms such an incident never occurred before. Yesterday's event was the first time a student brought a firearm onto campus. Based on information from counselors and guidance teachers that the shooter's friends expressed concerns, discussed weapons, and experienced various stressors, the school invited parents to discuss and find solutions without releasing further details.
