Supermarket Sales Jump 20% as Thais Stockpile Food
Thailand's Department of Internal Trade reports a 20% surge in supermarket sales as consumers stockpile food amid global advisories. Director-General Wathanyu Suea-iam says the increase is driven by end-of-month salaries, welfare spending, and stockpiling news, but panic buying remains limited. The government is coordinating with producers to ensure sufficient supply ahead of the holiday season and working to reduce agricultural costs.
The Department of Internal Trade revealed that supermarket purchases have risen 20% as Thais stock up on food. Director-General Wathanyu Suea-iam said the department met with retailers and wholesalers after several countries warned citizens to prepare 72-hour food reserves. Operators reported a 5-10% average sales increase since last week, with rice up 5%, dairy and bottled water up 15% each, and canned goods up over 5%. Factors include typical end-of-month salary spending, state welfare card usage, and food stockpiling news, though panic is not widespread. Concerns about potential cyberattacks on supermarket freezer systems, as seen in Europe, were addressed; retailers confirmed security systems are in place. The department is coordinating with producers and traders to monitor supply and prices continuously, urging increased warehouse and shelf stock ahead of New Year and year-end holidays. Wathanyu assured the public that Thailand's goods supply is sufficient, including agricultural products. The government is also working on agricultural cost measures, with a meeting next week involving animal feed, fertilizer, and livestock operators to find ways to reduce farmer costs, which would lower consumer food prices. Meanwhile, prices for fresh vegetables, meat, and general goods remain stable with minor seasonal fluctuations. Current prices: live pig 69.90 baht/kg, fresh pork (untrimmed) 134.56 baht/kg, chicken eggs 4 baht each, morning glory 16 baht/kg, onions 160 baht/kg, carrots 36 baht/kg, cabbage 10 baht/kg, red chili 40 baht/kg, holy basil 20 baht/kg.
