Thai Youth Olympians Focus on Development Over Medals at Dakar 2026
Thai youth athletes prioritize development over medals at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics under a new
Thailand's youth athlete contingent continues its campaign in the second half of the 4th Youth Olympic Games "Dakar 2026," held from October 31 to November 13, 2026, in Dakar, Senegal. Sports Authority of Thailand Governor Khunying Smanmit assessed the team's performance at the halfway mark, acknowledging that this edition differs fundamentally from previous ones. In the past, Thai athletes who excelled could qualify directly, yielding many medals. This time, a new participation policy allocates quotas equally among all nations, reducing Thailand's total slots. The Youth Olympics now emphasize participation and youth development over pure competitive excellence, aligning with Thailand's view that medals are not the sole measure of success. "Through the first half, many sports have shown promising performances. Though medals are still absent, this reflects development that can carry forward to larger tournaments like the Olympic Games. The key is that these 13-to-18-year-olds witness world-class competition; they will grow into the nation's core athletes and likely meet again at future Olympics," Khunying Smanmit said. The second half features boxing (Nov 7-12), windsurfing (Nov 8-12), cycling (Nov 8-10), athletics (Nov 8-10), and beach handball (Nov 9-13). All events are broadcast live on T SPORTS 7.
