A Taiwanese family narrowly avoided losing nearly 2 million baht when they accidentally discarded family heirloom gold jewelry worth approximately 81,000 Singapore dollars during house cleaning. The elderly family member had hidden all the gold in a secret compartment of an altar table but failed to inform other family members, causing the furniture piece to be picked up by waste management officials for disposal along with other items.
Only after the senior citizen remembered and quickly notified the garbage collection team did they manage to retrieve the altar table from the waste storage facility within 30 minutes. Both parties then proceeded to the Tongxiao police station to verify and count the recovered items, confirming all 27 pieces including gold necklaces, bracelets, rings, and gold bars, valued at nearly 2 million baht.
The family member revealed that all the gold jewelry served as dowry and inheritance passed down through many generations, holding both monetary and sentimental value. He thanked the waste management team for their swift assistance in recovering the precious items.
Meanwhile, Taizhong's environmental protection office issued a public warning advising residents to inspect all drawers, cabinets, and hidden compartments in furniture before discarding them, to prevent accidental loss of valuable items or those with sentimental significance.
