TAT Targets Chinese Travelers With Regional Tourism Strategy

Thailand's Tourism Authority is launching a regional strategy across China targeting high-value travelers through wellness, sports and cultural experiences, with dedicated offices in Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing promoting emerging Thai des

1d ago TAT Newsroom

Bangkok, 18 August 2026 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is strengthening its 2026 strategy designed around consumer travel interests across eastern, western and northern China. Led by TAT offices in Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing, this localised approach targets high-value travellers while highlighting fresh travel itineraries and spreading economic benefits to more emerging Thai destinations.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said, “Chinese travellers are becoming more diverse in how they choose destinations and experiences. TAT is responding with a more focused regional strategy that matches Thailand’s tourism strengths with the interests of each market. Wellness, sport, culture, communities and emerging destinations are central to this approach, helping us attract quality visitors while spreading tourism value more widely across the country.”

In eastern China, TAT’s Shanghai Office is targeting premium travellers through wellness and experiential tourism. Under “Healing Is the New Luxury”, TAT is working with LANN Space, a Chinese mindfulness and holistic wellness platform, and leading online travel agency Tuniu.com to promote restorative travel experiences in Saraburi and Khao Yai.

The campaign is supported by Key Opinion Leaders, positioning Thailand as a destination for physical, emotional and mental well-being. TAT is also reinforcing the aspirational “Amazing Thailand, The Journey Your Heart Leads” brand through over 2,500 promotional video screenings at five leading cinemas in Shanghai during summer, driving future travel and strengthening Thailand’s image as a quality tourism destination.

In Jiangsu, TAT has extended its reach through a live Nanjing International Television program, presenting experiential tourism and destinations around Rayong and Hua Hin to over five million viewers.

In western China, TAT’s Chengdu Office is focusing on sport tourism and creator-led content. Together with Zx-tour, a Chinese sports travel company specialising in marathon packages including international running trips, TAT organised an “Offline Sharing Session for Amazing Thailand Marathons” in Chengdu to engage fitness enthusiasts from Sichuan and Chongqing. This helped promote marathon and running events in Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Buri Ram, Hua Hin and Songkhla. While TAT also hosted Chinese content creators on a fam trip to Chiang Mai (extended into Chiang Rai) for community experiences, with the initiative supporting future direct flights linking western China to northern Thailand.

In northern China, TAT’s Beijing Office is targeting families for summer holidays while capturing demand in secondary provincial markets. In Changchun, TAT and major tourism partners in Jilin Province staged “Cool Summer Breeze: Long-Lasting Friendship Between Jilin and Thailand” showcasing Thai culture and soft power through Songkran-themed activities, Thai cuisine, handcrafts and contemporary performances.

The event attracted more than 80,000 participants, alongside a seven per cent increase from 2025 in direct airline seat capacity between Jilin Province and Thailand, supporting further travel demand from northeastern China.

Together, the campaigns demonstrate TAT’s targeted approach to China, with wellness and experiential travel prioritised in the east, sport and lifestyle travel in the west, and family travel and Thai culture in the north. Across all three regions, TAT links consumer interests with Thailand’s wider range of destinations and tourism products.

China remains Thailand’s largest international source market, delivering 3,149,889 arrivals from 1 January to 5 August 2026. Backed by the quality-focused “Trusted Thailand” initiative, which reinforces safety, service quality and visitor assurance across the tourism experience, TAT expects Chinese arrivals to exceed five million for 2026, underlining the market’s continuing importance in both visitor volume and expenditure.

TAT continues to strengthen its established Chinese visitor base while expanding high-value segments that drive tourism revenue, regional distribution and long-term competitiveness. The strategy is designed to generate wider benefits for local hotels, restaurants, transport and retail sectors.

Israeli Ambassador to Thailand Dr. Alona Fisher-Kamm concluded an official visit to Surat Thani yesterday, August 17. During her visit, she held talks with senior police officials and provincial leadership to strengthen cooperation, address local concerns, and ensure the safety of Israeli travelers. The ambassador and her delegation met with the Commander of Tourist Police Division 3, Setthasak Yimcharoen, alongside Surat Thani Provincial Police Commander, Suwat Suksi. Discussions centered on visitor security and responsible tourism. Moreover, they focused on fostering stronger ties between tourists and local communities across popular island destinations such as Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan, and Koh Tao. Photo via Facebook/ Israel in Thailand The envoy expressed sincere appreciation to local law enforcement for their ongoing assistance and open communication. She emphasised that close coordination remains vital given the large volume of Israeli visitors arriving in the province each year. The security meeting followed an official gathering on August 14 with Surat Thani Governor Jumpot Wannachatsiri and regional agency heads. During the talks, Dr. Fisher-Kamm requested continued care for Israeli nationals residing, running businesses, or traveling in the area. Addressing recent public friction, the ambassador noted that while the vast majority of Israeli visitors are law-abiding, isolated incidents of misconduct do happen, as with travelers from any nation. However, she cautioned that social media narratives often amplify negative incidents, creating misunderstandings and unwarranted feelings of insecurity. Photo via Facebook/ Israel in Thailand The embassy regularly briefs outbound travelers on Thai customs, laws, and cultural etiquette. In addition, the ambassador urged local authorities to contact the embassy directly whenever issues arise to ensure swift resolution. Dr. Fisher-Kamm also highlighted Israel’s five ongoing development initiatives in Thailand, including a high-value agricultural project on Koh Samui. Furthermore, she extended an invitation to Jumpot to attend an official conference in Israel this November. Jumpot affirmed that Surat Thani enforces the law transparently and treats all visitors equally regardless of nationality. He expressed interest in Israel’s high-value farming innovations as a learning model for the province. He also confirmed that provincial authorities stand ready to coordinate closely with the embassy on trade, travel, and security matters. On August 18, 2025, police units led by officers including Lieutenant Colonel Narodom Yuburne arrested a 42-year-old man identified as Wichai (surname withheld) in Kabinburi District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, along with eight Bangladeshi workers and one Myanmar national. A white Isuzu pickup truck registered in Sakaew Province was also seized.

Officers conducting patrols on Highway 359 in Sakaew Province, a known human trafficking route from Cambodia, spotted the suspicious vehicle traveling at high speed with numerous bags loaded in the truck bed. When signaled to stop, the driver accelerated and fled, prompting police to call for backup. The truck swerved into village roads in Wang Ta Chang Subdistrict before losing control and crashing along the roadside. The driver and all passengers then fled into a eucalyptus plantation.

Police coordinated with the subdistrict headman to pursue the fugitives over approximately three hours and apprehended all suspects. Under interrogation, Wichai admitted he is a boxing camp director in Aranyaprathet District, Sakaew Province, and had been hired to transport foreign nationals for 5,000 baht per trip to help fund his camp's operating expenses. He recruited the workers from the border area in Aranyaprathet and was transporting them to a bus station in Bangkok.

The migrant workers stated they came from construction work in Cambodia and were seeking to reach the Bangladesh Embassy in Thailand to arrange their return home. Police transferred them to Wang Ta Khian Police Station for legal proceedings and further investigation.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Interior Minister visited Margaret Beazley, Governor of New South Wales, at the Drawing Room of the NSW Government House on August 18, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. Sydney time. Both sides exchanged perspectives on Thailand-Australia relations and discussed ways to expand cooperation in mutually beneficial sectors.

The Prime Minister noted that this is the first official visit by a Thai prime minister to Australia in 14 years, and praised Australia as a strategic partner playing a constructive role in the region. Thailand and Australia have maintained close ties for many years and will soon mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

The PM also commended the NSW Governor for her continued engagement with and support for the Thai community in New South Wales, and congratulated her on the extension of her term until May 2027. He highlighted New South Wales as a multicultural society that enables communities from around the world, including Thais, to preserve their identity and cultural heritage while participating in society.

Approximately 30,000 Thai nationals currently reside in New South Wales, with about 10,000 Thai students studying at leading universities in the state. This presents significant opportunities to promote research cooperation, student exchanges, and workforce development in future sectors.

The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the growth of tourism between Thailand and Australia, with approximately 800,000 Australian tourists visiting Thailand in 2025, reflecting strong and dynamic people-to-people links between the two countries. He thanked the NSW Government for its continuous support of the Thai community and Thai cultural activities, including the Sydney Lunar Festival and the Thailand Grand Festival organized by the Thai Consulate-General in Sydney in September.

Chumphon temple drug bust: 3 monks test positive for methLegacyOfficers in Chumphon province tested 10 Buddhist monks and novices for drugs on August 17. Three tested positive for methamphetamine, and officials ordered them to leave the monkhood. The raid took place at a temple in Tha Sae district at 11am. Local residents had complained that a monk there might be using drugs. The Internal Security Operations Command in Chumphon led the operation, working with the provincial administration and Chumphon Provincial Police. Officers tested nine monks and one novice using urine samples. Methamphetamine showed up in three of them: a 50-year-old monk, a 30-year-old monk and a 19-year-old novice. Officers then brought the three to the temple’s abbot. He began the process for them to leave the monkhood, under Buddhist clergy rules. Officials referred the three to health promotion hospitals near their home areas for drug treatment and rehabilitation. The report made no mention of arrests or criminal charges against the three. Chumphon was not the first such case. A similar raid had taken place in Ratchaburi province in May 2026. Local officials tested monks at several temples in Mueang district on May 29, after complaints of drug use. Ten of them tested positive, and officials sent them to disrobe. Officers then found another monk with a positive result at a temple in Huai Phai subdistrict. They asked him to contact a dealer and arrange a delivery to the temple, then waited to catch the seller. A man rode a motorcycle into the temple to deliver the drugs. Officers arrested him with five methamphetamine pills, the amount the monk had ordered. The dealer lived in a hut on a banana plantation in Don Rae subdistrict. Officers searched the hut and found another 138 pills. The dealer had previously worked for the Department of Corrections before resigning to sell drugs to monks at temples. He used children to deliver the drugs, according to the report. Police sent him to Mueang Ratchaburi police station for further investigation. The story Chumphon temple drug bust: 3 monks test positive for meth as seen on Thaiger News.

Thai Woman Dies Mysteriously in South Korea, Family Struggles to Bring Body Home
1d ago Khaosod

A Thai woman working as a traditional massage therapist in South Korea has died suddenly, shocking the family and the broader Thai migrant worker community abroad. The victim, identified as Piyawan (nickname Pla), 34, from Kamphaeng Phet province, was located after Facebook community pages posted calls for her relatives to urgently contact the Thai Embassy in Seoul.

The woman's mother, Lamyai, 69, confirmed that her daughter had worked in South Korea for seven years and regularly called home and sent money. Their last conversation occurred on August 8, when the daughter mentioned abnormal menstrual bleeding. The mother advised her to purchase painkillers, noting the daughter had no known medical conditions.

The family is devastated but unable to afford repatriation costs estimated at 100,000 to 200,000 baht, depending on whether the full body or cremated remains are returned. The father of Tritrueng Subdistrict has begun coordinating with relevant authorities. Those wishing to donate can contribute to the Agricultural Cooperative Bank account number 016982971787 in the name of Lamyai Samreedi. The family requests public compassion to bring their daughter's remains home for proper Buddhist funeral rites.

Thailand's Leaders Push for Faster Economic Growth Beyond 2.2%

Thailand's government leaders say the country's 2.2% projected economic growth for 2026 is insufficient and aim to accelerate expansion through investment in digital sectors and stimulus programs. The nation faces headwinds from energy cost

Thailand's Leaders Push for Faster Economic Growth Beyond 2.2%
1d ago Khaosod

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Deputy Prime Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas have expressed dissatisfaction with Thailand's revised economic growth forecast of 2.2% for 2026, saying the country can perform much better. When asked about his satisfaction with Ekniti's work as finance minister, Anutin replied: "More than satisfied." Anutin stated that while the National Economic and Social Development Council upgraded its forecast from 2% to 2.2%, the government believes the economy should expand faster. "The economy is okay, but there's no satisfaction level with growth. We need to ask why not 3%, why not 4%, 5%, or 6%—why can't it keep growing even faster," Anutin said.

Ekniti acknowledged that the growth figure is insufficient given major challenges that require urgent action, particularly investment's role in restructuring Thailand's economy and integrating Thai workers into supply chains. He noted that second-quarter 2025 growth of 1.9% exceeded market expectations of 1.7%, reflecting the positive impact of the 400-billion-baht emergency decree loan and the "Thailand Helps Thailand Plus" stimulus program launched in June.

However, Thailand faces a "triple crisis"—energy insecurity, cost-of-living pressures, and weak purchasing power. The current conflict has driven up oil and natural gas prices, pushing the current account deficit to 17 billion dollars in the second quarter. Producer price inflation rose nearly 9%, while private consumption growth slowed to 1.9% from 3.3% the previous quarter. Ekniti warned that delays in addressing these three crises would worsen their impact.

On a positive note, investment expanded 13% in the second quarter—the highest double-digit growth in 13 years—driven by digital and artificial intelligence sectors. The government plans to pursue three strategies: supporting the economy through aid programs and purchasing power maintenance; accelerating economic restructuring by reducing energy import dependence; and promoting future investment through the Board of Investment to ensure foreign capital benefits small and medium enterprises and Thai workers.

Deputy PM Pushes Visitor Economy Drive at Suvarnabhumi Airport
1d ago Khaosod

On August 17, Deputy Prime Minister Supajee Suthammanpong, Commerce Minister Surasak Panjcharoen, Transportation Ministry officials, and advisor Weerasak Khovasuratana visited Suvarnabhumi Airport to review inbound passenger service processes, identify operational challenges, and coordinate solutions. The visit supports the Commerce-Tourism-Community Economy subcommittee's mission to resolve bottlenecks and unlock short-term barriers with tangible economic impact.

The initiative emphasizes Visitor Economy—expanding beyond traditional tourism to capture spending from travelers arriving for education, business, wellness, and other purposes with high per-capita expenditure and longer stays. This reflects a shift from maximizing visitor numbers to increasing economic value and travel experience quality.

Key measures include reducing congestion and improving immigration screening efficiency through faster automated passport gates and workforce adjustments by flight time and peak hours; integrating real-time passenger and flight data so agencies can pre-position staff and facilities; and enhancing security through tourism police patrols, baggage area surveillance, and joint patrols to prevent illegal guides and tourist exploitation. Officials will also optimize the airport perimeter's economic potential, improve transport links, and maximize existing infrastructure. Each agency has been assigned clear responsibilities, action plans, and timelines, with progress tracking to ensure solutions move beyond recommendations into practical implementation visible to arriving visitors.
