Sun PhuQuoc Airways launches daily direct flights between Bangkok and Phu Quoc starting August 8, reducing travel time to just 80 minutes and boosting tourism connections between Thailand and Vietnam.

Bangkok, 20 July 2026 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) welcomes Sun PhuQuoc Airways’ new daily direct service between Bangkok and Phu Quoc, scheduled to begin on 8 August 2026. With a flight time of approximately one hour and 20 minutes, the route will expand travel options between Thailand and Viet Nam while strengthening two-way tourism links.

The service was introduced at a launch event in Bangkok on 15 July 2026, presided over by H.E. Mr. Pham Viet Hung, Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam to Thailand. Also Miss Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and South Pacific.

Miss Pattaraanong said, “TAT welcomes new air services that broaden access to Thailand and strengthen two-way tourism across the region. Sun PhuQuoc Airways’ daily Bangkok–Phu Quoc route will provide travellers with greater choice and flexibility while supporting our work with airline and tourism partners to position Thailand as an accessible, diverse and value-led destination for Vietnamese visitors.”

Part of Sun Group, Sun PhuQuoc Airways began commercial operations in November 2025 with a network centred on Phu Quoc, the popular island destination off Viet Nam’s southern coast. Its hub-and-spoke model connects the island with domestic and international markets, supported by an expanding Airbus A320 and A321 family fleet. Bangkok forms part of the airline’s continuing expansion across Asia.

The route adds to an extensive air network connecting six Vietnamese cities with Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket.

Viet Nam remains one of Thailand’s important short-haul markets. More than 300,000 Vietnamese arrivals were recorded from January to early July 2026, with the total expected to reach 689,000 by the end of the year.

Thailand Bolsters Border Security Against Cambodia
20 Jul Khaosod

On July 20, Air Vice Marshal Praphas Saonjai, Deputy Commander of the Royal Thai Air Force and director of the Thai-Cambodia Joint Information Center (JIC), led a delegation to Ubon Ratchathani and Si Sa Ket provinces to monitor security along the border. He received briefings on operational readiness, regional security situation, troop preparedness, and public safety measures from military commanders.

After the briefing, Air Vice Marshal Praphas met with troops and distributed morale-boosting gifts to representatives from the special task forces operating in the border areas. He praised all personnel for their sacrifice and dedication amid challenging circumstances while upholding national sovereignty and security.

The air force chief emphasized three operational principles: maintaining personnel and equipment safety for mission readiness, preventing friendly casualties through integration and accurate intelligence, and strict compliance with international law and rules of engagement while targeting legitimate military objectives with proportionality and minimal civilian impact.

Air Vice Marshal Praphas stated that Thailand is now more prepared than during the previous two incidents, holding advantageous terrain with superior capabilities across land, naval, and air forces, making any Cambodian assault unlikely. He expressed confidence in the military's weapons, positions, and personnel, noting that the three armed forces operate jointly according to Thai military doctrine with close coordination.

Specific military targets during critical phases are prioritized with high-impact assessments. All strikes are conducted with maximum efficiency based on rules of engagement and international law. He noted that no country has condemned Thailand, dismissing fake news as unsustainable, and urged the public to rely on official security briefings rather than misinformation.

Student Activist Netiwit Receives Suspended Sentence for Draft Evasion
20 Jul Khaosod

SAMUT PRAKAN — 20 July 2026, A Thai court on Monday sentenced prominent student activist Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal to six months in prison, suspended for one year, after finding him guilty of evading compulsory military conscription.

The Samut Prakan Provincial Court convicted Netiwit under Sections 27 and 45 of the Military Service Act, which criminalise failure to comply with military conscription requirements.

The court ruled that Netiwit's challenge to the constitutionality of the Military Service Act could not succeed because the Constitutional Court had previously determined that the law does not violate the constitution.

Judges also rejected his argument that he refused military service on the grounds of religious belief and conscientious objection, ruling that neither constitutes a legal exemption under the Military Service Act.

The court suspended the six-month prison sentence for one year, citing Netiwit's lack of any previous prison record.

Netiwit was not present when the verdict was delivered. He is currently in the United States after being admitted to Harvard University Divinity School for a postgraduate programme.

Long-running challenge to conscription

The case stems from Netiwit's refusal to participate in Thailand's military conscription process, which he has opposed for years on moral and religious grounds.

In 2018, Netiwit reported for the annual military draft in Samut Prakan but publicly declared that he would not submit to conscription, identifying himself as a conscientious objector. At the time, he argued that forcing individuals to serve in the military against their will violated freedom of thought, conscience and religion.

He subsequently sought to challenge the constitutionality of the Military Service Act, arguing that the law failed to accommodate conscientious objectors and discriminated against those whose beliefs prevented them from bearing arms.

His legal team also asked the Constitutional Court to determine whether the provisions of the Military Service Act conflicted with constitutional protections for individual rights and freedoms. However, the Constitutional Court later ruled that the legislation was constitutional, clearing the way for the criminal case to proceed.

What is conscientious objection?

Conscientious objection refers to the refusal to perform military service because of sincerely held religious, ethical or moral beliefs. In many countries, conscientious objectors are allowed to perform alternative civilian service instead of joining the armed forces.

International human rights bodies, including the United Nations Human Rights Committee, have recognised conscientious objection as deriving from the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion under international human rights law. However, countries differ in how they implement that principle.

Thailand's Military Service Act does not recognise conscientious objection or religious belief as grounds for exemption from compulsory military service.

A philosophical teaching attributed to Luang Pho Cha Subhaddo of Wat Nong Pa Phong in Ubon Ratchathani reminds us: "Learn to overcome yourself, not to overcome others." Kru Ba Saroey Kantisaro, formally known as Phra Kru Nimmanakar Sophan of Wat Mongkol Kiri in Tha Song Yang, Tak, commands tremendous respect among Karen, Burmese, and other ethnic communities in the region. His most celebrated amulet coin is the Solar Eclipse Edition of 2538, featuring his seated meditation image with Khmer script on the obverse and the mythical Rahu consuming the sun on the reverse, dated 24 October 2538. The article also discusses related sacred amulets by other revered monks, including the Naga-Protected Tamarind Leaf amulets of Somdet Phra Phutthajarn (Nom) of Wat Anong Karam, crafted in three materials—silver, gold-plated copper, and unplated copper—and consecrated in 2463. It further explores the Kosulabh or "Bow Cow" amulets created by Luang Pho Noi Kanthachoto, the legendary abbot of Wat Si Sawat, which require completion within auspicious planetary hours, making them among Thailand's most complex ritual objects. The piece concludes by examining the sacred goat amulets of Luang Pho Am Kesaro of Wat Nong Krabork in Ban Khai, Rayong, crafted from lightning-struck buffalo horn and believed to bring wealth and flourishing commerce to their keepers.

Four Injured After Sedan Plunges Into Waterhole
20 Jul Khaosod

On the night of July 19, 2025, police from Nonthai Station in Nakhon Ratchasima received a report of a blue sedan that had lost control and careened off Highway 290 into a wooded area near a vehicle repair shop in Kamphaeng Subdistrict, Nonthai District. Rescue unit Hook 31 was immediately dispatched to assist. At the scene, the sedan was found completely overturned with its roof and cabin submerged in a water-filled pit. The vehicle doors could not be opened, forcing rescuers to search for an entry point. They discovered the driver's side door could be opened slightly, revealing the driver and three passengers floating inside the water with debris scattered throughout the vehicle. Due to the narrow door opening, rescuers had to bring in cutting tools to extract the four injured occupants from the submerged vehicle. After providing emergency first aid, three victims were transported to Noon Hospital via Kamphaeng Subdistrict and Nonthai Hospital ambulances. The fourth victim, in more serious condition, was transferred to Maha Raj Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital. A tow truck later recovered the vehicle from the water. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident and will interview the driver and passengers once their condition improves to file a formal report.

Luang Pho Plian's First-Edition Amulet from Wat Chai Mongkol

Luang Pho Plian, a revered monk who became abbot of Wat Chai Mongkol in Samut Sakhon Province in 1923, is remembered for a legendary encounter with a supernatural crocodile that he subdued using spiritual power.

Luang Pho Plian's First-Edition Amulet from Wat Chai Mongkol
20 Jul Khaosod

Luang Pho Plian Kanthasilo, also known as Phrakhru Sakorn Silajarn, was the former abbot of Wat Chai Mongkol in Samut Sakhon Province. Originally named Plian Kongthin, he was born on November 3, 1890, in Ban Ko subdistrict, Mueang district. His parents were Nai Loi and Nang Si Kongthin, and he had seven siblings. In 1908, at age 18, he began novice training at Wat Ko to study reading and writing. In 1910, at age 20, he was fully ordained as a monk at Wat Ko under his preceptor Luang Pho Nut, the abbot of Wat Bang Pla, with additional teachers overseeing his ordination. He received the monastic name Kanthasilo. He spent six Buddhist Lent seasons at Wat Ko before moving to Wat Khlong Khru for seven more seasons. He then became abbot of Wat Chai Mongkol (originally called Wat Hua Takhe) in 1923.

The temple's unusual history begins with a legendary crocodile. According to local tradition, villagers from nearby Mahajai hunted a fierce crocodile that killed indiscriminately, eventually striking it with a golden axe in the head. The wounded crocodile fled and hid in a marsh on the way to Ban Phaew district. When villagers tracked it down, none dared approach due to their fear of its supernatural power. They invited Luang Pho Plian, a disciple of the legendary Luang Pu Tao Kao Yot (Luang Pho Nut), to subdue the creature. Upon arrival, Luang Pho Plian performed a ritual to summon the crocodile from the water. The creature emerged with the golden axe still embedded in its head. Using his spiritual power, Luang Pho Plian put the crocodile to sleep and removed the axe, discovering mystical tattoos of four-directional yantras on its head—markings placed by Luang Pu Tao Kao Yot. The crocodile ultimately succumbed to its wounds and was buried at the location.

After the crocodile's death, the villager who threw the axe died, and others who participated in the hunt fell seriously ill, believed to be the work of the crocodile's vengeful spirit. A spirit-calming ritual was performed and a shrine was erected to appease it. The incidents ceased miraculously. The crocodile shrine originally stood within the temple grounds and was later relocated to the rear. The first settlers in the area named their village Ban Hua Takhe (Crocodile Head Village) and requested Luang Pho Plian to name the temple Wat Hua Takhe. Later, the temple was renamed Wat Sirsa Takhe, and eventually Wat Chai Mongkol when Luang Pho Plian expanded the facilities and sought a more auspicious name. The village was renamed Chai Mongkol accordingly, though elderly locals still occasionally use the old name Ban Hua Takhe. Luang Pho Plian passed away peacefully on April 17, 1976, at the age of 86.

Rental Building Settles as Residents Flee Safety
20 Jul Khaosod

At 11:00 a.m. on July 20, 2026, officials at the Nai Khlong Bang Plakod Subdistrict Administration Organization in Samut Prakan received reports of a two-story rental building experiencing structural settlement and potential collapse. Residents living in the 24-room building, which sits in Soi Yai Pae village, successfully evacuated themselves to safety without injury.

When officials arrived to inspect the 10-by-20-meter elevated structure, they found severe cracks in concrete beams, columns, and stairways, with chunks of concrete littering the ground. Beneath the building's foundation, the concrete had fractured badly enough to expose rusted steel reinforcement. The support columns had tilted and cracked. Disaster prevention officers sealed the site with crime-scene tape and engineers issued a complete ban on building entry due to imminent collapse risk.

A tenant named Sophea, 41, discovered the damage while preparing food in her ground-floor room. Hearing the sound of cracking concrete, she quickly evacuated her bedridden mother using a wheelchair, carried her grandchild, and then went door-to-door alerting other residents. About 6 to 7 people occupying 3 or 4 rooms escaped safely, with everyone prioritizing their lives over possessions. The building, over 25 years old, had belonged to the tenant's late husband and served as income for her family.

The building owner, Nittaya, 56, explained that the structure was built more than 25 years ago and had deteriorated with age. Engineer Kritsada Magket, director of the subdistrict public works office, banned all access and use of the building pending further structural assessment. Officials said residents may be allowed to retrieve personal belongings once movement stabilizes, but only one or two people at a time.

Four Stars Discuss Historical Drama 'When Light Fades'
20 Jul Khaosod

Momentum is building for the historical drama series "When Light Fades," as four actors—Bass Asawapolpol, Lonchang Atthip Kosinkoed, Pean Tai Nattanich Pradisathan, and Kate Katreeya Bowens—gathered today to discuss the series and their roles.

**Is the series based on history?** Pean Tai explained: "It takes inspiration from a historical period and uses a specific timeline as a base, but the events are rewritten. It serves as a framework so we understand the era, people's values, and social structures. Then we zoom in on character relationships—not just between two men, but also between men and women in love, or parent and child, like Lonchang's relationship with Khun Teneng, or my own character as a father with a son in the military. This story delves deeply into character relationships."

**What was your first impression reading the script?** Kate shared: "When I was cast, I found out my character 'Mada' was quite different from myself, which felt interesting. Since Mada has diverse relationships—romantic, with a child, sibling dynamics—I wanted to make her as complete and layered as possible."

Lonchang noted: "I auditioned for two roles and ultimately got 'Rawin,' a student who flees into the forest and encounters a communist base. I was happy with it. When I auditioned opposite Bass, who played my comrade Yew, I realized Rawin is someone with conviction and ideology. I had to do homework to build that inner confidence and certainty before the audition."

Bass added: "I play Comrade Yew. During casting, I read opposite several potential Rawins—about five or six. When I worked opposite Lonchang, there was chemistry. What drew me to Yew initially was his quiet, introspective nature. I loved that because Korean dramas often have brooding male leads, and I wanted to try that. It felt like a challenge."

Pean Tai continued: "I auditioned for Yew as well, and it was the only role I auditioned for. The production team called back saying yes and that we'd work together. I became 'Dandin' instead—I laughed at that. Since I didn't get that audition, I reviewed the character list and found Dandin interesting. He's similar to Yew but carries internal drama from family relationships suppressed under military duty and loyalty."

**Did you do workshops together?** Bass explained: "We had several workshops, including weapons training since the series requires it. We learned proper, safe handling for shooting."

**Are there romantic scenes? How are they handled?** Lonchang said with a laugh: "They're intense. The first episode is already intense."

Bass described: "Since NC—the communist cadre—is set in the forest and it's my first time filming outdoors, we shot by a riverside. We had to communicate to make both actors as comfortable as possible. Once we're in character, things flow naturally."

Lonchang agreed: "When I'm in character, it flows on its own."

**What locations did you visit?** Kate mentioned: "We filmed in many places—Pathum Thani, Saraburi, Nakhon Nayok. Each location was beautiful."

Pean Tai noted: "About 80-90 percent is forest scenes."

Bass added: "I'm in the forest basically 100 percent. The main set is in Pathum Thani, a military camp they built a whole village set for."

Lonchang concluded: "It was great for the actors. It helps us immerse ourselves in our characters and believe in the story.
