Thai Military Shows ASEAN Observers Border Fence With Cambodia
Thai military invited ASEAN observers to inspect a border fence under construction with Cambodia in Chanthaburi Province, asserting the project is over 45% complete and fully compliant with international law.
The Thai military took observers from three ASEAN countries to inspect the Thailand-Cambodia border fence, asserting that all operations are transparent and comply with international law. On July 1, Air Vice Marshal Chitpol Kogkitsummakal, director of the International Relations Office under the Thai military's public affairs department, led a nine-member team of ASEAN observers stationed in Thailand—representing Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines—to Chanthaburi Province to assess the security situation along the Thailand-Cambodia border. Rear Admiral Udom Kulsiripunyo, commander of border defense for Chanthaburi and Trat provinces, received the delegation.
During the visit, the observers inspected progress on the "Border Security Fence" construction project in boundary markers 52-59 in Po Tha Ron District, which is now over 45% complete. The project aims to enhance safety and improve border area management under a partnership with the Chulalongkorn University Foundation through the Hathai Thip Fund.
Regarding concerns about a "gap" in the wall at boundary marker 52, the naval engineering task force clarified that this is a standard engineering construction step left for future improvements as determined by the Thailand-Cambodia Joint Border Commission (JBC). Removable panels will be installed in the future to facilitate joint border inspections between the two countries.
The military confirmed that all operations proceed transparently in accordance with international law and have received full cooperation from Cambodia's side at every stage.
