Thai Military Shows ASEAN Border Fence Project To International Observers

Thai military showcased a border fence project with Cambodia to ASEAN observers in Chanthaburi province, stating construction complies with international law and is over 45% complete.

2h ago Khaosod

CHANTHABURI — The Thai military on Tuesday hosted a delegation of ASEAN observers at the Thai-Cambodian border in Chanthaburi province, where they were briefed on security measures and the progress of a border fence project, reaffirming that the construction complies with international law.

The nine-member delegation, comprising representatives from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines accredited to Thailand, was led by Air Vice Marshal Chitphon Korkitsammakul, director of the International Affairs Office at the Defence Intelligence Department. Rear Admiral Udom Kulsiripanyo, chief of staff of the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defence Command, welcomed the group and provided a security briefing.

The observers inspected the construction of the border security fence between boundary markers 52 and 59 in Pong Nam Ron district. Thai authorities said the project is more than 45% complete and is intended to strengthen border security and improve border management.

Addressing questions about a gap near boundary marker 52, the Chanthaburi Marine Task Force explained it was part of the engineering design and had been left open pending decisions by the Thailand-Cambodia Joint Boundary Commission. The opening will later be fitted with a removable panel to facilitate joint inspections of the boundary marker by Thai and Cambodian officials.

The military said the project is being carried out transparently, in accordance with international law, and with Cambodian observers present throughout the process. The ASEAN delegation also visited strategic locations along the border to assess measures against transnational crime and border management.

The Royal Thai Armed Forces said it remains committed to safeguarding Thailand's sovereignty while promoting peace and good relations with neighbouring countries in line with ASEAN cooperation.

Man Surrenders After Dumping 200 Pig Heads in Water Supply

A man surrendered after 200 pig heads were illegally dumped into public water sources in Nakhon Ratchasima on June 29, contaminating supplies used for tap water production. The suspect, a meat processing company employee, claimed the spoile

2h ago Khaosod

One suspect surrendered to investigators at Bua Yai Police Station in Nakhon Ratchasima on July 1 after 200 pig heads were illegally dumped into public water sources used for tap water production. The dumping occurred at two locations: 140 heads in a pond within Sanam Luang Park in Bua Yai Municipality, and 60 heads at Takhok Weir in Ban Prang Subdistrict, Kong District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The incident, which took place on June 29, caused foul odors and affected water quality for residents.

According to Pol. Maj. Suranat Sakonwan, commander of Bua Yai Police Station, the suspect confessed that he and three colleagues were employees of a major meat processing company. They had transported 200 pig heads for sale, but the product spoiled. The company ordered them to dispose of it, yet due to negligence and poor judgment, they dumped the heads into the water instead, hoping to feed fish. The suspect apologized to all affected residents.

Three other employees are expected to surrender on July 2. Police remain skeptical of the suspect's account and plan to conduct separate interviews with the remaining three suspects to clarify the true reason for the dumping, the origin of the pig heads, and whether they were genuinely company employees. Criminal charges will be filed pending further investigation.

Spanish Man's Headaches Hide Rare Pork Tapeworm Brain Infection

A Spanish man's chronic headaches initially suggested brain cancer before high-resolution imaging revealed a rare pork tapeworm infection in his brain, treated with antiparasitic medications.

2h ago Khaosod

A 60-year-old Spanish man presented to the hospital with chronic headaches, initially suspected to be metastatic brain cancer after preliminary brain scans revealed unclear abnormalities that alarmed the medical team. High-resolution MRI imaging, however, revealed no tumor but instead discovered pork tapeworm larvae (Neurocysticercosis) inhabiting his brain.

A medical report published in Emerging Infectious Diseases confirmed the blood test diagnosis of Neurocysticercosis, or pork tapeworm brain infection, despite the patient having never traveled abroad. The infection occurred through ingestion of parasite eggs, which hatch into larvae, penetrate the intestinal wall, form fluid-filled cysts, and can migrate to various organs including the brain—distinctly different from consuming undercooked or raw pork where parasites typically mature into adult forms in the intestines.

Patients with brain tapeworm disease may experience headaches, seizures, dizziness, muscle weakness, speech difficulties, or in some cases memory loss. Without treatment, the condition can lead to increased intracranial pressure and persistent seizures, potentially proving fatal. Though rare in Europe, cases continue to be reported periodically.

The Spanish patient was treated with antiparasitic medications Albendazole and Praziquantel along with symptomatic care, following standard treatment protocols. The World Health Organization estimates approximately 2.8 million people are infected with Taenia solium annually, with most cases occurring in Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe. A previous widely-shared case involved a patient with tapeworms dispersed throughout the body, likely from consuming raw or undercooked pork contaminated with parasite larvae.

Digital Technology Reunites 93-Year-Old Widow With Lost Husband

A 93-year-old Chinese widow wept upon seeing a digitally restored photograph of her husband, a soldier who died in the 1953 Korean War battle at Dongshan Island at age 20, nearly seven decades after his death.

2h ago Khaosod

A 93-year-old Chinese widow broke down in tears after seeing a digitally restored photograph of her husband who died in war decades ago, reuniting lost memories and love through digital technology.

Zhao Chuifen from Liuyang lost her young husband Zhang Zhu'xin after he was conscripted in the 1950s. In July 1953, amid escalating Korean War tensions, a major battle erupted on Dongshan Island when Kuomintang forces attacked. The People's Liberation Army was forced to urgently send reinforcements, including soldiers from Liuyang. The battle lasted over 36 hours and resulted in the PLA's victory, but at a heavy cost: over 1,200 soldiers killed or wounded, including Zhang Zhu'xin, who died at just 20 years old—leaving behind no photographs or family memories.

After losing her husband, Zhao grieved deeply, crying every day. She continued caring for his family dutifully before being arranged to remarry his cousin to support the household. Despite having five children in her later life, Zhao never forgot her first love and kept his memory alive. Her family still calls her second husband "Father Zhu'xin" to this day.

In May, volunteers from Nanjing University of Technology, supported by Hunan provincial authorities, launched a project to restore the faces of soldiers who died at Dongshan Island using family information, photographs, and historical documents. On June 24, restored images of four soldiers from Liuyang were returned to their families.

When Zhao received Zhang Zhu'xin's restored image, she collapsed emotionally upon seeing his young face. Holding the photograph, she gazed at her husband's features before overwhelming grief overcame her. She pressed her face to the frame, lit incense, and spent a long time paying respects as her descendants stood nearby, moved by the moment. Her daughter revealed this was only the second time she had seen her mother weep.

For decades, these heroes from Dongshan Island existed only as names inscribed on monuments, making it difficult for many families to pay respects. Now, with their faces restored, they are no longer merely names on a memorial—they have become real people once again.

Former Official Admits to Audio in Exam Cheating Scandal

Former Agriculture Ministry official Krit admits his voice appears in an audio clip linked to an exam cheating scandal but denies involvement in fraud, apologizing to Deputy PM Thongsak for reputational damage.

2h ago Khaosod

On July 1, 2025, Phongkorn Saothon (Krit), a former committee member of the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry and one of the voices in the audio clip regarding an exam fraud scheme, visited Thung Song Hom Police Station with his lawyer Yuttapong Petcahote to declare his innocence and deny any attempt to evade authorities.

The case began on June 30 when Tiwa Karakrasan, representing Deputy Prime Minister Thongsak Thongsi, filed a complaint at the police station against three individuals: Som, Krit (the voices in the recording), and Bangjack (who distributed it). They face charges of joint defamation and computer crimes.

Krit confirmed the voice in the clip was genuinely his, not AI-generated, and apologized to Deputy Prime Minister Thongsak Thongsi for the damage to his reputation caused by the public exposure. He asserted that neither he nor Thongsak was involved in any exam fraud scheme.

Regarding his relationship with Gandapart (Som), Krit clarified they met only recently through a mutual acquaintance and had met just once in Surat Thani province. He denied any special closeness or negotiations for personal gain, stating the audio was recorded since late last year. He has provided a full statement to investigators.

Krit's lawyer revealed that formal charges have not yet been filed because his client came forward voluntarily. The legal team is gathering evidence to file a counter-complaint against those responsible for secretly recording and publicly distributing the private conversation.

Thailand Battles Dual Drug Crisis: Trafficking and Addiction

Thailand faces a mounting drug crisis both as a trafficking hub and domestic addiction epicenter, with authorities struggling to address root causes in neighboring production facilities despite international pressure and mounting public saf

2h ago Khaosod

Thailand's role as a transit point for drug trafficking to other countries has gained international attention following the recent arrest of a Thai Airways flight attendant in Australia. Drug enforcement agencies must thoroughly investigate this trafficking network and arrest all involved parties while implementing measures to prevent Thailand from becoming a drug smuggling corridor. International scrutiny threatens Thailand's international standing and could harm tourism and exports through stricter inspections, damaging the nation's credibility.

However, the drug crisis extends beyond export concerns. Domestic drug addiction is rampant and deeply troubling, with Thai society in crisis due to widespread drug use and trafficking. Streets are increasingly filled with intoxicated individuals behaving erratically and dangerously. Drug-induced hallucinations lead to violent attacks on civilians, with cases of drug-influenced motorcycle riders throwing rocks at parked cars already reported. These incidents pose serious threats to public safety.

While authorities including the Narcotics Control Board and police continually conduct investigations and make arrests, they have failed to address the root cause: production facilities in neighboring countries, both on the western and northeastern borders. Tackling the source requires government-level policy and international cooperation with neighboring countries. Otherwise, Thailand will remain a drug trafficking hub, with authorities only addressing symptoms rather than the underlying problem.

The drug trafficking export issue demands urgent action to show the international community Thailand's commitment. Equally critical is controlling domestic drug sales and addiction within the country. Comprehensive measures and regional cooperation are essential to break the cycle.

Retirement Lottery Program Moving Forward

Thailand's retirement savings lottery program is moving toward implementation after the National Savings Fund Committee confirmed no obstacles remain. The digital scheme, priced at 50 baht per ticket, allows Thais aged 15+ to accumulate sav

2h ago Khaosod

The National Savings Fund Committee secretary-general announced the advancement of the retirement savings lottery program, or "Huay Kaesiwan," for the public. The secretary-general stated that discussions with the Finance Ministry and policy officials show no obstacles to the project's progression. The committee is requesting 60 days to organize and clarify the system before presenting it to the Finance Minister for consideration. If approved, full implementation will accelerate, with clarity expected by the end of 2025 and official ticket sales to commence.

The Huay Kaesiwan project originated from the Pheu Thai Party when it led the government after the 2023 election, driven by the Finance Ministry and the National Savings Fund Committee under the concept of "buy lottery, money doesn't disappear, it becomes savings."

The initial format involves digital scratch-off tickets priced at 50 baht each. Eligible buyers must be Thai nationals aged 15 and above, with a monthly purchase limit of 3,000 baht. Prize drawings occur every Friday, with a first prize of 1,000,000 baht (5 prizes) and a second prize of 1,000 baht (10,000 prizes).

Crucially, money spent on tickets will not be lost but accumulated as savings, with full refund upon reaching age 60.

Phaophoomi Rojansokul, deputy leader of Pheu Thai Party and former Finance Ministry official who championed the project, expressed support for the current Finance Ministry's continuation of the policy for public benefit. The former official noted that the program has gained international recognition as an innovative model, with international organizations preparing to study Thailand's lottery savings model in depth.

The former official stated that the previous government developed and promoted this policy, resulting in the National Savings Fund Act being published in the Royal Gazette as law. The National Savings Fund Committee system is ready to support Huay Kaesiwan.

The program has passed approval from both the House of Representatives and Senate, indicating widespread acceptance. If the current government recognizes the benefits, it can immediately continue and advance the project.

Democrat Party Faces Long Road to Recovery After Bangkok Election

The Democrat Party's poor showing in Bangkok's recent governor and district elections reveals a crisis of public confidence, with the party's traditional voter base failing to return despite vigorous campaigning by top leaders.

2h ago Khaosod

The Bangkok governor and district election results reveal more than just political direction in the capital—they also indicate the Democrat Party's challenges in reviving public support, a road that remains long and difficult. The party's gubernatorial candidate received substantially fewer votes compared to the party's House election performance in February, while winning only 8 districts in the subgovernor races. This confirms that the party's traditional voter base in Bangkok has not returned, and popular support has not recovered as expected. The party must now undertake a comprehensive strategic review, since relying on past reputation or former political ties is no longer adequate. Instead, candidates must build their identity through genuine accomplishments, maintain close contact with the public, understand local issues, and prove they can truly represent constituents in their districts. This Bangkok election also reflects an encouraging trend in Thai politics: Bangkok residents now value tangible accomplishments over political attacks and rhetoric. Political mudslinging carries less weight than credibility demonstrated through actual performance. Many hope this represents a significant turning point in Thai politics across all arenas, where voters support politicians based on results rather than clever but hollow discourse. For the Democrat Party, fielding candidates this cycle represents an attempt to regain the attention of Bangkok voters once more. Party leaders—including Abhisit Vejjajiva, Korn Chatikavanij, and Dr. Kharidi Lueawyoichueb—all campaigned vigorously and worked to restore the party as a viable choice for Bangkok residents. Yet the final election tally shows the Democrats still face considerable challenges ahead. Bangkok voters today no longer vote automatically based on party name alone. Instead, they carefully evaluate candidates, party image, and administrative credibility simultaneously. This is a major hurdle the Democrat Party must clear if it hopes to stand firmly in Bangkok politics again.
