23 Jul Khaosod

A multi-vehicle collision occurred on Petchkasem Road in Thabsakae, Prachuap Khiri Khan, when a ten-wheeler truck struck a sedan, which then hit a small four-wheel van and crashed into an electric pole, leaving the truck driver trapped. At 12:30 p.m. on July 23, 2025, Police Lieutenant Colonel Winai, investigation officer at Thabsakae Station in Prachuap Khiri Khan, received a report of a multiple-vehicle collision with injuries on Petchkasem Road (northbound) near the U-turn at Nong Hoi, kilometer markers 362–400, Subdistrict Ang Thong, Thabsakae District. He and rescue teams from Sawaeng Rueang Ruam Dharma Foundation responded immediately.

At the scene, officers found a Mitsubishi sedan registered in Prachuap, driven by a 29-year-old woman, severely damaged and stopped in the middle of the road about 10 meters from a dynamo shop. A four-wheel closed van had been pushed against and shattered an electric pole, pressed between the van and the ten-wheeler truck. The truck driver was trapped inside. Rescue teams used cutting tools to extract and transport him to Thabsakae Hospital.

Truck driver Pradist reported that he was driving straight when the sedan suddenly cut in front of him. Unable to brake in time, he struck the sedan, lost control, and collided with the four-wheel van, which slid into the electric pole and broke it. Preliminary investigation included reviewing CCTV footage to determine the precise cause of the accident.

A wife has exposed her police officer husband's infidelity on social media after discovering his hidden affair with a prominent online influencer. The officer had repeatedly claimed he was deployed on national-level duties and forced to sleep at the station for extended periods, leaving his family without financial support and refusing to come home. Suspicious of his absences, the wife hired a team of investigators to track him down and uncover the truth. They discovered that instead of being on duty, he was secretly renting a condominium where he lived with another woman, enjoying a luxurious lifestyle as though they were a newly married couple. He was also redirecting his income and allowances to support his mistress. The other woman is notably a well-known social media personality based in Ayutthaya province. The investigative team documented everything with photographs and videos. The wife responded by posting an image of their marriage certificate on Facebook to legally establish their union and call for justice. She has announced plans to pursue a damages lawsuit against her husband and file disciplinary action against him through official channels.

Two Major Drug Suspects Extradited From Laos
23 Jul Khaosod

On July 23, 2026, at the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge checkpoint in Muang district, Nong Khai province, senior drug enforcement officials formally received custody of two major drug suspects from Laotian authorities. The handover was attended by Khaniset Phapeernont, director of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board; Pongsasiri Chueanbaan, commander of the ONCB Region 4; Suchart Thonmani, provincial vice governor of Nong Khai; and relevant security personnel.

The first suspect, a 34-year-old man from Samut Prakan province, faces charges of conspiracy to commit drug offenses, trafficking in Type 1 narcotics (methamphetamine), and distributing psychotropic substances (ketamine). He was the driver coordinating transport of 10 million methamphetamine pills and 60 kilograms of ketamine from Suphan Buri into Samut Prakan's Bang Bo district, and is listed on the ONCB's 2026 wanted persons announcement.

The second suspect, a 31-year-old from Loei province, was apprehended on a warrant from Loei Provincial Court. He is accused of conspiracy related to drug trafficking and is alleged to be a network commander along the Thai-Lao border overseeing the smuggling of methamphetamine and crystal methamphetamine into Thailand. He is also connected to the seizure of 1.6 million methamphetamine pills destined for Thailand from Vientiane, and a separate 2023 seizure of 600 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and a sack of tiger skins in Nong Khai.

After both suspects fled Thailand, the ONCB coordinated with Laotian authorities to locate and monitor them. The first was traced traveling from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Vientiane, while the second was found hiding in Laos. Laotian officials detained them pending return to Thailand for prosecution.

New Police Chief Gets Seven-Year Tenure, Drawing Mixed Reactions

General Samran Nualma's appointment as Thailand's new Police Commissioner includes a historic seven-year tenure starting October 1, 2025, sparking debate over whether the extended term enables meaningful reform or stifles career advancement

New Police Chief Gets Seven-Year Tenure, Drawing Mixed Reactions
23 Jul Khaosod

General Samran Nualma's appointment as Thailand's new Police Commissioner has become a focal point of discussion, especially regarding his historic seven-year tenure—the longest any police chief will have served in the country's history. He takes office on October 1, 2025, and will retire on September 30, 2032. Critics have raised concerns that such a lengthy term could block career advancement for other officers, while others view it as an opportunity for substantial organizational overhaul and police reform.

Former Police Commissioner Suvathorn Jaiyodsuk, who served from October 1, 2018, to September 30, 2020, offered a favorable perspective on Samran's extended tenure. Suvathorn noted that few leaders have ever had such an opportunity and stressed the importance of making full use of it. He pointed out that seven years is sufficient time to restructure the organization, adjust unit sizes, reallocate personnel, eliminate redundancies, and fill gaps—something most previous police chiefs could not accomplish in their one or two-year terms.

Suvathorn emphasized that Samran should use this time to establish long-term foundations, create sustainable systems, modernize organizational culture, and integrate IT infrastructure to benefit the police force and the nation. He highlighted that most previous police commissioners faced internal conflicts and spent much of their limited time defending their positions rather than driving meaningful change. With his unprecedented seven-year window, Samran has a rare chance to restructure the police organization comprehensively and implement reforms that would represent a major leap forward from the past.

Thailand Must Overhaul Welfare Database System

Thailand's welfare card system has wrongly denied benefits to thousands of genuinely poor citizens due to strict criteria and fragmented government databases that fail to communicate with each other.

Thailand Must Overhaul Welfare Database System
23 Jul Khaosod

Thailand's new means-tested welfare card registration has exposed major flaws in the country's social welfare system. While the government aims to remove fake beneficiaries and help an additional 2.3 million genuinely poor people, overly strict criteria combined with outdated verification systems have wrongly denied benefits to many struggling citizens.

In principle, the government's goal is sound—public funds should reach people in genuine hardship, not those exploiting loopholes. The problem is in the execution: rigid conditions and slow-moving checks have stripped benefits from thousands of truly poor Thais. Many have only just learned they appear as company directors, shareholders, car owners, or landowners without ever knowing it, because criminals used their personal data to commit fraud.

The burden of proof has fallen on ordinary people, not on those who stole their identities. The crisis deepens because Thailand lacks an integrated government database system. The Interior Ministry, Finance Ministry, Transport Ministry, and other agencies each keep and verify their own records. When data does not connect, screening errors are inevitable—and the truly poor suffer the consequences.

Another failure: the Finance Ministry had no appeals mechanism in place from the start, despite knowing that major rule changes would affect millions. It only later rushed to open a hotline to handle complaints.

The chaos reflects inadequate state planning. A good welfare system is not measured by strict rules alone, but by accuracy, fairness, and genuine ability to help the truly disadvantaged without creating unnecessary hardship. The complaints from poor Thais who lost their cards should not be dismissed as temporary problems. Instead, they are a warning that the state must urgently reform its databases, integrate data across all agencies, and close loopholes where criminals can abuse stolen identities.

Government must ensure that poor and low-income people do not become double victims—first of criminals who misuse their personal data, and then of administrative failures, even if those failures were not intentional.

Malaysian boat caught supplying diesel to Thai fishing boat off SatunLegacy

Thai customs officers arrested seven people today, July 23, after intercepting a Malaysian-registered modified fishing vessel allegedly transferring smuggled diesel to a Thai trawler off the coast of Satun. The arrests were made during a maritime patrol by officers from the Customs Department and Satun Customs House aimed at preventing the illegal importation of fuel from Malaysia. While patrolling waters around Koh Klang between Tarutao, Adang and Lipe islands in Koh Sarai subdistrict, Mueang district, officers spotted a modified Malaysian fishing vessel transferring diesel fuel to a Thai trawler. Photo via 77kaoded Officers boarded both vessels and arrested the Thai captain, identified only as 64 year old Chad from Phatthalung, along with two crew members. They also arrested 27 year old Apin, the captain of the Malaysian vessel, together with three Malaysian crew members. According to customs officials, Apin said the vessel belonged to an employer based in Penang, Malaysia, who instructed him to deliver diesel fuel in the Andaman Sea. Apin allegedly said the vessel was carrying 10,000 litres of diesel, of which about 4,500 litres had already been transferred to the Thai fishing boat before officers intervened. Photo via 77kaoded He also told officials the diesel had been purchased in Malaysia for 16.50 baht per litre. However, he said he did not know the price at which it would be sold because payment arrangements had been made directly between the owner of the Thai vessel and his Malaysian employer. Customs officers seized both vessels and the remaining diesel fuel as evidence. Officials estimated the total value of the seized assets at between 7 million and 8 million baht. The accused were handed over for legal proceedings on allegations of offences under the Customs Act and immigration law. Photo via 77kaoded Elsewhere, the Royal Thai Police‘s (RTP) Fuel Crime Suppression Centre announced the arrest of two suspected members of a criminal syndicate in Hat Yai, Thailand. The group has allegedly been smuggling petrol from Malaysia and reselling it in the southern provinces of Songkhla, Satun, and Narathiwat.

Four Thousand Buriram Residents Appeal Vehicle Eligibility for Welfare Card

Nearly 4,000 Buriram residents are appealing welfare card denials after being disqualified for owning vehicles, even aging ones over 15 years old used as work tools rather than assets.

Four Thousand Buriram Residents Appeal Vehicle Eligibility for Welfare Card
23 Jul Khaosod

Nearly 4,000 residents of Buriram province are filing appeals at transportation offices after losing eligibility for Thailand's state welfare card program. Investigators found that most disqualifications stem from vehicle ownership—cars or motorcycles—even when the vehicles are over 15 years old. One appellant, a woman using old vehicles for work and daily transport, argued these are not assets reflecting wealth but tools for making a living, and urged the government to exempt vehicles older than 15 years in the interest of fairness to low-income earners. Some people had already sold their aging vehicles for scrap but were still counted as owners and denied benefits. Wichiid, 54, revealed he was disqualified for owning four motorcycles; he brought documentation for two still in use, but the other two—over 20 years old—were scrapped long ago and cannot be appealed. He and others pleaded with the government to relax the criteria, explaining that their vehicles are essential to their livelihoods; some earn only 200–300 baht a day growing vegetables while supporting up to nine family members, and they asked to have their original welfare entitlements restored, especially for elderly people without the strength to find other work.

Customs Seizes 30kg of Etomidate at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Customs seized 30kg of etomidate worth over 21 million baht at Suvarnabhumi Airport on July 20, hidden in a blue drum that was being trafficked from India to Laos through Thailand.

Customs Seizes 30kg of Etomidate at Suvarnabhumi Airport
23 Jul Khaosod

The Customs Department, in coordination with the Airport Narcotics Interception Task Force (AITF)—comprising the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, the Narcotics Suppression Police Command, and the Thai Armed Forces Security Center—seized 30 kilograms of etomidate with an estimated value exceeding 21 million baht on July 20, 2025. The drug was found hidden in silver plastic bags concealed inside a blue plastic drum and was confirmed through laboratory testing to be etomidate, a Class 2 controlled substance under Thailand's drug laws. The shipment originated from India, transited through Thailand, and was destined for Laos, making it subject to charges of illegally trafficking a Class 2 drug through the kingdom and violations of the Customs Act.

Etomidate is a fast-acting anesthetic used exclusively in medical settings. It was reclassified from a special-control drug to a Class 2 controlled substance in late July 2024 and is now in the same category as ketamine. Customs Director Panthong noted that this seizure represents a significant success in disrupting transnational drug networks and demonstrates the department's commitment to preventing Thailand from becoming a production base or transit route for narcotics and controlled substances destined for other countries.

During the first 10 months of fiscal year 2025, the Customs Department has seized over 200 drug-related cases involving methamphetamine, heroin, ketamine, cocaine, stimulant pills, and etomidate, with total contraband exceeding one ton valued at more than 1.4 billion baht. The department pledged to continue strengthening risk management measures, intelligence analysis, and international cooperation to intercept drug smuggling and other contraband trafficking in line with government policy.

AIS Business Launches World's First Multi-Operator eSIM Network
23 Jul Khaosod

AIS Business has partnered with Bridge Alliance and Thales to launch the world's first multi-operator eSIM network for enterprise customers, using the latest GSMA SGP.32 standard to enhance IoT connectivity for businesses in Thailand and the Asia-Pacific region. The platform allows organizations to connect, manage, and switch IoT devices seamlessly across multiple mobile operators in various countries through a single orchestration platform, simplifying connectivity management and efficiently supporting regional enterprise-level IoT expansion. The project involves collaboration with four Bridge Alliance member network operators: AIS (Thailand), Globe Telecom (Philippines), Optus (Australia), and Singtel (Singapore), which have jointly tested the multi-operator platform until it was ready for live deployment, demonstrating Thailand's readiness to support cross-border enterprise IoT services and elevate digital connectivity in the Asia-Pacific region.

Globally, organizations are increasingly accelerating digital technology adoption to drive business growth and develop smart services through IoT devices. GlobalData forecasts that cellular IoT and machine-to-machine (M2M) connections in the Asia-Pacific region will reach 1.3 billion by 2030, driving rising demand for secure, flexible connectivity solutions that support cross-border expansion. However, organizations operating across multiple countries still face challenges managing dispersed connectivity, handling different provisioning systems from various operators, and managing complex operational processes, resulting in higher costs and service continuity impacts.

Bridge Alliance and Thales have developed a platform integrating Thales's end-to-end IoT eSIM technology with the GSMA SGP.32 standard and advanced orchestration systems, enabling organizations to manage connectivity centrally. Devices can automatically select the most suitable network, switch operators automatically, and maintain continuous service without requiring physical SIM card changes. The platform has been tested on devices supporting both IoT Profile Assistant Embedded (IPAe) and IoT Profile Assistant on Device (IPAd) per GSMA SGP.32 standards, allowing organizations to automatically manage IoT device connectivity throughout its lifecycle, improving operational efficiency and enhancing service security across all countries where the organization operates.

Phubpha Akavibhat, head of enterprise customer management at Advanced Info Service Public Company Limited (AIS), stated: "AIS Business is committed to developing reliable digital connectivity infrastructure to support business growth and accelerate sustainable digital transformation. As Thailand's leading digital infrastructure provider, we are proud to collaborate with Bridge Alliance..."
